‎Carte-de-Visite of Tennie C. Claflin‎

‎Portland Me: Geo. Stinson & Co 1870. Very good. Carte-de-visite 3.75 x 2.5 inches. Minor soiling and foxing. A lovely and early image of Tennie C. Claflin -- suffragist Spiritualist and Wall Street Broker. Along with her notorious sister Victoria Woodhull Claflin opened a Wall Street brokerage firm in 1870 likely issuing this image as part of the promotion of the endeavor. Other copies or version we have found include the caption "Tennie C. Claflin Broker." Claflin also owned and edited a weekly newspaper with her sister starting in 1870 Woodhull and Claflin's Weekly a publication that advocated Free Love and other radical ideas. The pair famously tried to vote unsuccessfully in 1871. Their brokerage firm collapsed in the Panic of 1873 and they later moved to London following a bout of scandal involving Henry Ward Beecher. ‎Naswawkee Camp Fire Chamberlain S. Dakota caption title‎

‎Chamberlain & Various Places in South Dakota 1921. About very good. 69 original photographs each measuring 2.5 x 3.5 inches plus six leaves of text twelve postcards other ephemera. Oblong album embossed calf boards string-tied. Moderate wear at edges some rubbing and scuffing to boards. Light dust soiling internally. Photos generally clear captioned in manuscript on album leaves. A engaging photo album compiled by a young South Dakota woman that documents her activities as a part of the Chamberlain Chapter of the Camp Fire Girls during the early 1920s. Vera Gilman and her friends were members of the "Naswawkee Camp Fire" founded in 1918 in Chamberlain South Dakota. As four leaves of introductory text explain Gilman joined the group whose Native American name was intended to translate to "Feathered Arrow" in 1920 when the chapter made a camping trip to American Island a large Missouri River island opposite Chamberlain that was submerged by the construction of the Fort Randall Dam in 1953. The first half of the album documents this excursion of the eleven members all of whom have "Indian names" and occasional appear in faux-Native American dress. The second part of the album documents a 1921 trip to the Black Hills and "Dakota Wonderland" which included the Badlands Deadwood Lead Canyon and other sights which the chapter funded from their performances of a theatrical production "A Perplexing Situation" in Chamberlain and nearby Ola. A lively record of this Plains small-town iteration of Camp Fire an outdoor youth organization founded in 1910 as the girls' alternative to the Boy Scouts. unknown books‎

‎Women: New York‎

‎IN ASSEMBLY - MARCH 6 1802. COMMITTED TO THE COMMITTEE OF THE WHOLE HOUSE. AN ACT TO BAR CERTAIN FEMES COVERT FROM DOWER caption title‎

‎Albany 1802. Letterpress broadside 13 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches. Docketed on verso. Old folds light foxing. Very good. Untrimmed. An unrecorded slip-bill printing of an act presented in the New York state legislature in 1802 to prevent widows of Loyalists from receiving dowers for confiscated property. It is evidence not only of continuing acrimony toward Loyalists and attempts to profit from their financial losses but also of continued legal efforts to keep women economically dependent in Federal-era America. This act was probably considered or presented in conjunction with an "Act to Facilitate the Discovery and Sale of the estates of Attainted Persons" that passed in the same session. That act allowed New Yorkers who discovered property owned by Loyalists and subject to forfeiture under its 1779 Forfeiture Act to receive a twenty- five percent share of the proceeds of the sale of this newly-discovered property. The present slip bill calls for preventing widows of deceased Loyalists from receiving any property deemed subject to confiscation. "Femes covert" is a legal term meaning simply "married woman." The final act as passed on March 31 1802 does not mention widows of deceased Loyalists but speaks simply of heirs to confiscated lands.

"During the American Revolution many states passed laws allowing them to seize the property of known loyalists. So-called 'confiscation laws' effectively criminalized dissent against the American Revolution. The seizure and sale of loyalist property also raised revenue for the state by redistributing property from Loyalists to the rest of the community. Many new states established their legitimacy in the eyes of their constituents by depriving certain people of their right to property. New York built one of the most robust property confiscation regimes. In fact New Yorkers started seizing loyalist property even before the state ratified its Constitution. In March of 1777 the Provincial Convention - a provisional government - created in counties under Patriot control 'Committees of Sequestration' which seized property abandoned by Loyalists auctioned it off and sent those funds to the state treasurer.Alexander Hamilton made his legal career by representing former loyalists in lawsuits where they tried to reclaim seized property. Many of the loyalists Hamilton represented were quite wealthy and Hamilton believed these men and their capital would prove critical for building the United States. He wanted them to reintegrate into American society. Resolving disputes over property confiscation was a critical first step in accomplishing that goal and enabling the broader transition from violent revolution into routine civil government. Hamilton won in New York. Most other states also successfully reintegrated loyalists. The United States Constitution even includes a clause prohibiting bills of attainder the broad category of laws under which confiscation acts fell. It took away from democratic state legislature this coercive and punitive power to enforce political conformity" - Boonshoft.

The legal discourse on attainder and the confiscation of Loyalists' property in the state of New York seems to be largely silent on the issue of widows' rights. The present broadside illuminates a dark corner of this rather difficult issue and helps bring to light yet another instance when the rights of women in early America were often null.

Slip-bills' were printed in small numbers for the use of members of legislatures as a bill is being debated and considered. They are quite uncommon survivals and significant evidence of legislative intent and process. This slip-bill is unrecorded with no copies in auction records nor in OCLC. Mark Boonshoft "Dispossessing Loyalists and Redistributing Property in Revolutionary New York" posted on the New York Public Library Blog September 19 2016. unknown books‎

‎McClure vs. the Salvation Army. Supreme Court of the United States Case No. 72-134‎

‎New York 1972. Hardcover. Very good condition. Personal copy of the inside documents which won the sex discrimination case in favor of the Salvation Army belonging to William J. Moss 1921 - 2005 partner at Cadwalader Wickersham and Taft and valued advisor to The Salvation Army. The McClure case was a leading case for establishing the doctrine of "ministerial exception" having settled the law upon all points involved in such case in 1964.

This is the private record of newspaper articles motions filed complaints opinion and orders and briefs concerning the important 1972 sex discrimination suit brought against the Salvation Army by a female plaintiff who sued the organization for receiving lower pay as a female employee than her male counterparts. Billie B. McClure served as a Salvation Army officer the equivalent of an ordained minister; after complaining that male officers were receiving higher salaries and better benefits than females she was fired.

The case was pursued all the way to the Supreme Court with the decision rendered in the favor of the Salvation Army with the stipulation that as a religious institution the Salvation Army was not subject to the equal employment requirements as established in Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The doctrine announced in McClure became known as the “ministerial exception" and in the years since the ruling nearly all of the nation’s federal appeals courts have embraced it.

The record is a presentation copy from Harry Lamon to William Moss partner Cadwalader Wickersham and Taft New York. Presentation inscription at ffe thanking Moss for his "wise counsel" in the McClure case; signed Harry Lamon dated 5/15/73. Lamon was an Atlanta attorney for the Salvation Army. ‎1939. WOMEN. Soviet Women. 50 ff. illustrated with photographs throughout. 4to 250 x 190 mm. bound in publisher's embossed yellow cloth in publisher's cardboard slipcase. Moscow: State Art Publishers 1939. A photographic homage to the role of women in Soviet Russia. Unlike so many of the Soviet propaganda books where the reality is far removed from that depicted in the books this work demonstrates a reality which was that in the Soviet Union women had in fact reached a point where many if not all were availed of the same opportunities given to men. Perhaps because it was published on the eve of the War this happens to be a particularly scarce book. A fine copy. Karasik The Soviet Photobook 1920-1940 pp. 484-485. hardcover‎

‎Women; Theater; George Cruikshank Jr., attributed to‎

‎Original pen sketch of Lady Hutchinson as a Man‎

‎1853. Ephemera. Good overall. A petite figure evidently a woman dressed as a man. There is a suggestion of a bosom and wide hips accenting the narrow waist. The small round face has a mop of hair and manicured beard & moustache - an unconvincing man. She was possibly an actress but we have not discovered her identity. Signed "Geo Cruikshank 1823" with the light pencil inscription at the side "Lady Hutchinson". On artist's paper 8x9" Lady Hutchinson measures 6" from top hat to toes.

George was the son of George Cruikshank one of the leading caricaturists of the late 1790s. His early work was in caricature but in 1823 he started to focus on book illustration. His first major work was Pierce Egan's Life in London 1821 in which the characters Tom and Jerry two 'men about town' visit various London locations and taverns to enjoy themselves and carouse. This was followed by The Comic Almanack 1835–1853 and Omnibus 1842. In the late 1840s Cruikshank's focus shifted from book illustration to an obsession with temperance and anti-smoking.

Accompanied by another sheet of artist paper inscribed "To John Horrall one of the best from Tom Fry July 28/13". Cruikshank was probably one of the most renowned caricaturists of his day. His amusing commentaries on the human state still today. As provenance this item came with other Cruikshank signed proofs of his caricatures. unknown‎

‎Woods, Leonard.‎

‎A SERMON, PREACHED AT HAVERHILL, (MASS.) IN REMEMBRANCE OF MRS. HARRIET NEWELL, WIFE OF THE REV. SAMUEL NEWELL, MISSIONARY TO INDIA. WHO DIED AT THE ISLE OF FRANCE, NOV. 30, 1812, AGED 19 YEARS. TO WHICH ARE ADDED MEMOIRS OF HER LIFE.‎

‎258 p. + Plus lovely mezotint style portrait, engraved by R. Rawdon after the painting by William Doyle. Damp stained. Foxed. Small 12mo. Worn original leather backed boards. Early (Pennsylvania?) manuscript ownerships of Mary S. Grubb and Mrs. Albert E. Landis. Called the Eighth Edition on the title page. On the half-title is a notice, printed in black letter, not frequently mentioned in descriptions of this edition: "The Profits of this Work are devoted to the Support of the Foreign Mission from America." Harriet Newell made the passage to India from America as a young wife and missionary in 1812 at the age of 19. She and her husband arrived in Calcutta in late June, but reembarked for France that October. On the voyage a daughter was born but died within a week. Harriet subsequently fell ill and died in France seven weeks later. The majority of the text is taken from Harriet's often high spirited letters and journals. She describes the ocean voyage in detail. Leonard Woods was among the founders of the American Tract Society in 1814 and American Temperance Society in 1826. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! PA 55‎
