Illustrée de 5 pointes sèches de Valentine Hugo. Un des quelques exemplaires hors commerce sur papier teinté, justifié et signé par le poète «exemplaire d'auteur».‎

‎Un recueil au coeur de la mue esthétique de Char qui, après le grand livre surréaliste de 1934 (Le Marteau sans maître), s'éloigne de Breton et de l'orthodoxie du groupe pour faire naître une parole plus nue, plus responsable, sans renier l'énergie de l'image ; entre 1936 et 1938 s'écrivent Placard pour un chemin des écoliers et Dehors la nuit est gouvernée : le texte liminaire de Placard, la célèbre « Dédicace » aux enfants d'Espagne, écrite en mars 1937 dans le fracas des bombardements de Madrid - un mois avant Guernica -, marque la première saisie franche par Char de la question de l'engagement du poème : arrachée aux Cahiers GLM où elle devait paraître, la « Dédicace » est donnée ici avec une illustration de Valentine Hugo, pour une grande plaquette qui sera vendue au pavillon espagnol de l'Exposition internationale de 1937, afin d'« affirmer face à l'événement une responsabilité » ; dès lors, le recueil entier se place sous le signe d'un refus politique explicite - « Enfants d'Espagne, j'ai formé ce PLACARD... Pardon de vous le dédier. Avec ma dernière réserve d'espoir. » - et ouvre la voie aux livres de guerre où l'Histoire ne sera plus seulement contexte mais champ d'action.‎

‎44 p. Foxed. Disbound. 8vo. 220 mm. Joseph Ripley Chandler (1792-1880) was a Whig member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. Born in Kingston, MA, he was engaged in commercial work in Boston, MA, and moved to Philadelphia, PA in 1815. He founded a young ladies' seminary and worked as editor of the United States Gazette from 1822 to 1847. He was a member of the Philadelphia City Council from 1832 to 1848, and a member of the State constitutional convention in 1837. For a short time (1848), he was an editorial assistant at Graham's Magazine in 1848. Chandler was elected as a Whig to the Thirty-first, Thirty-second, and Thirty-third Congresses. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1854. He was appointed by President James Buchanan as Minister to the Two Sicilies and served from June 15, 1858, to November 15, 1860. He served as president of the board of directors of Girard College. He became interested in prison reform and was a delegate to the International Prison Congress held at London in 1872.
