Next to Sappho and Cleopatra, she is the best known woman of the ancient Mediterranean. Yet continued uncritical reception of her depiction in Attic comedy and naive acceptance of Plutarch's account of her in his Life of Pericles prevent us from understanding who she was and what her contributions to Greek thought may have been. Madeleine Henry combines traditional philological and historical methods of analysis with feminist critical perspectives, in order to trace the construction of Aspasia's biographical tradition from ancient times to the present. Through her analysis of both literary and political evidence, Henry determines the ways in which Aspasia has become an icon of the sexually attractive and politically influential female, how this construction has prevented her from taking her rightful place as a contributor to the philosophical enterprise, and how continued belief in this icon has helped sexualize all women's intellectual achievements. This is the first work to study Aspasia's biographical tradition from ancient Greece to the present day.‎

‎Artiste doué pour le dessin, Edouard-Louis Henry-Baudot né Nancy 1871, est inscrit à l'Atelier Julian en 1892 où il cêtoie de nombreux artistes et peut suivre les cours de maîtres réputés. Edouard Henry-Baudot est un artiste peintre influencé par la période postimpressionniste, attiré par l'art nouveau naissant et le le japonisme dont il collectionne les estampes; Il devient sociétaire des Artistes Français en 1894, ainsi que de la Nationale des Beaux-Arts en 1910 où il expose presque exclusivement dès le début du XXè siècle. Inspiré par la mythologie, véritable passion pour cet homme cultivé, nourri de culture classique, il consacrera à ce thème de très nombreuses compositions; son uvre sachèvera par douze gouaches sur carton destinées à illustrer un ouvrage sur « Les métamorphoses dOvide » (1943/1944), qui ne verra malheureusement jamais le jour. Edouard Henry-Baudot représentent la nature dans sa beauté, sa pureté : ses fleurs, ses arbres, ses animaux. Comme de nombreux artistes, le corps féminin est une grande source dinspiration, certainement née lors de ses études à latelier Julian. Il accueille de nombreux modèles dans son atelier du Boulevard Berthier. La Galerie Françoise Livinec dans le 8ème arrondissement de Paris consacra une exposition sur l'artiste en janvier et février 2013.Une jeune femme pose. Elle est assise sur un lit d'herbe. Le visage tournée vers le spectateur, son regard est intense. Edouard-Louis Henry-Baudot travaille le corps et les expressions de son modèle avec des traits rapîdes et un geste sûr. Tirage unique à 355 exemplaires numérotés sur vélin pur fil Marais.Louise Hervieu (1878-1954) mena sa carrière sur deux fronts : artiste peintre et écrivaine, comme en témoigne cette évocation du Paris de son enfance. Souffrant de syphilis héréditaire, elle utilisa aussi sa propre expérience pour être le fer de lance d'une lutte sociale sur la santé. Son roman autobiographique, Sangs couronné du prix Femina en 1936, expose au grand jour les maladies congénitales. Elle parviendra en 1938 à obtenir des pouvoirs publics la création du carnet de santé.‎
