Cumming, C.F. Gordon.
AT HOME IN FIJI. Second Edition, Complete In One Volume.
pp. x, 365, (7)[Publisher's catalogue] + Frontis, full page drawings and folding map of the Fiji Archipelago. Inked ownership. First signature slightly dampstained. Slight age staining. 8vo. Original full cloth binding, worn, stained and spotted. Hardbound. Early American edition of a classic on life in the South Pacific. Constance Frederica 'Eka' Gordon-Cumming (1837-1924) was a travel writer and painter. She was born in Scotland, the 12th child of a wealthy family. She taught herself how to paint, and had help from artists visiting her home, including one of Queen Victoria's favorite painters, Sir Edwin Landseer. After spending a year in India in 1867, she became interested in travel. Gordon-Cumming was a prolific travel writer and landscape painter who traveled the world, mostly in Asia and the Pacific. She painted over a thousand watercolors. Miss Gordon-Cumming received much criticism from male writers of the era, perhaps because she did not fit in the traditional Victorian role of women, as she often traveled alone and unaided. . **PRICE JUST REDUCED! "Chicago freelance journalist Cat Marsala relaxing at home after a long week's work reporting on the city's best restaurants looks forward to a quiet evening with her semi-significant other Dr. Sam Davidian; her parrot Long John Silver; and her temporary houseguest a Dalmatian named Dapper. As a special treat Cat buys Dapper his very own soup bone at Chicago's most elegant and exotic food emporium Spenser and Angelotti. The Dalmatian is delighted with his bone but his euphoria is short-lived when Sam a trauma surgeon snatches the bone away. The bone is human probably part of a large male's leg which suggests two immediate a murder may have occurred at the Spenser and Angelotti store and a potential health hazard may exist in the store's butcher shop and meat cases. Cat gets on the phone to her longtime friend Chicago's chief of detectives Harold McCoo who with the mayor the medical examiner and other officials agrees to a deal. The store will do a five-times-your-money-back recall on its meat and Cat and the cops will have twenty-four hours to find a killer before the story goes public and Spenser and Angelotti's reputation is trashed. HARD LUCK: A Cat Marsala Mystery
New York NY U.S.A.: Charles Scribner's Sons 1992. 1st edition with complete number line beginning with 1. Fine in fine dust jacket not price clipped in protective mylar cover. Chicago freelance journalist Cat Marsala in her third outing here after Hardball and Hard Tack watches the story of her career land--literally--in front of her when Jack Sligh an Illinois lottery official plummets to his death from a skyscraper. Cat recognizes the corpse because she'd made an appointment with Sligh in regard to an article she was writing on the proposed Central States Lottery. Convinced Sligh was pushed Cat begins an in-depth investigation of his co-workers at the Illinois state lottery as D'Amato develops her solidly plotted story. Many of the employees Cat talks to belong to the large family of Sligh's estranged wife Doris Furman: her sister brother nephew and her father who may well have mob connections. Cat explores the ramifications the Central States organization might have on the Furman-controlled state lottery to determine what if anything Sligh knew or intended to reveal that might have gotten him killed. As the case proceeds details of Cat's private life including a parrot that quotes Shakespeare and a boyfriend in a detox unit give the tough street-smart reporter a distinctive warmly human quality. . HARD WOMEN: A Cat Marsala Mystery REVIEWE COPY
Farmington Hills MI U.S.A.: Scribners 1993. 1st edition with complete number line beginning with 1. Light remains of sticker at fep else fine in fine dust jacket not price clipped in protective mylar cover. .REVIEW COPY with slip laid in. "D'Amato turns in another excellent Cat Marsala mystery after Hard Luck despite the tension-destroying flash-forward opening in which free-lance journalist Cat finds prostitute Sandra Lupica her houseguest dead in the alley behind her apartment building. Cat first meets Sandra while seeking women to interview for her "TV essay" on prostitution in Chicago; later her research includes a guided tour with Ross Wardon a helpful but gratingly sexist vice cop who knows red-light life from streetwalkers up to high-priced escort services. Cat is getting a sense of the varied nature of the prostitution scene when Sandra shows up on her doorstep with her clothing torn a lump on her head and a fat lip caused by "My boyfr--my father." She'll grant an interview if Cat will put her up temporarily. When the police show only a lukewarm interest in how Sandra went from being safe inside the apartment to dead on the pavement Cat plunges even deeper into a world where it's tough to tell who your friends are. Although her tale carries a determined social conscience D'Amato spins an engrossing story convincing us again that Cat is as likable as she is clever." -- Publishers Weekly. First Edition. The Alpine Obituary

Uncorrected Proof of the fifteenth novel in the Emma Lord series. This book is in paper back style not the usual trade paper style for Proofs. I don't know if the publisher was planning on releasing this book as a paper back original and then something changed but all the information on the back cover suggests a paper back original. But in September 2002 the first edition of this book was a hard cover. The front cover is lightly curling. In near fine unread condition.
Ballantine Books / Fawcett paperback
