‎Albany 1802. Letterpress broadside 13 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches. Docketed on verso. Old folds light foxing. Very good. Untrimmed. An unrecorded slip-bill printing of an act presented in the New York state legislature in 1802 to prevent widows of Loyalists from receiving dowers for confiscated property. It is evidence not only of continuing acrimony toward Loyalists and attempts to profit from their financial losses but also of continued legal efforts to keep women economically dependent in Federal-era America. This act was probably considered or presented in conjunction with an "Act to Facilitate the Discovery and Sale of the estates of Attainted Persons" that passed in the same session. That act allowed New Yorkers who discovered property owned by Loyalists and subject to forfeiture under its 1779 Forfeiture Act to receive a twenty- five percent share of the proceeds of the sale of this newly-discovered property. The present slip bill calls for preventing widows of deceased Loyalists from receiving any property deemed subject to confiscation. "Femes covert" is a legal term meaning simply "married woman." The final act as passed on March 31 1802 does not mention widows of deceased Loyalists but speaks simply of heirs to confiscated lands. <br> <br> "During the American Revolution many states passed laws allowing them to seize the property of known loyalists. So-called 'confiscation laws' effectively criminalized dissent against the American Revolution. The seizure and sale of loyalist property also raised revenue for the state by redistributing property from Loyalists to the rest of the community. Many new states established their legitimacy in the eyes of their constituents by depriving certain people of their right to property. New York built one of the most robust property confiscation regimes. In fact New Yorkers started seizing loyalist property even before the state ratified its Constitution. In March of 1777 the Provincial Convention - a provisional government - created in counties under Patriot control 'Committees of Sequestration' which seized property abandoned by Loyalists auctioned it off and sent those funds to the state treasurer.Alexander Hamilton made his legal career by representing former loyalists in lawsuits where they tried to reclaim seized property. Many of the loyalists Hamilton represented were quite wealthy and Hamilton believed these men and their capital would prove critical for building the United States. He wanted them to reintegrate into American society. Resolving disputes over property confiscation was a critical first step in accomplishing that goal and enabling the broader transition from violent revolution into routine civil government. Hamilton won in New York. Most other states also successfully reintegrated loyalists. The United States Constitution even includes a clause prohibiting bills of attainder the broad category of laws under which confiscation acts fell. It took away from democratic state legislature this coercive and punitive power to enforce political conformity" - Boonshoft. <br> <br> The legal discourse on attainder and the confiscation of Loyalists' property in the state of New York seems to be largely silent on the issue of widows' rights. The present broadside illuminates a dark corner of this rather difficult issue and helps bring to light yet another instance when the rights of women in early America were often null. <br> <br> Slip-bills' were printed in small numbers for the use of members of legislatures as a bill is being debated and considered. They are quite uncommon survivals and significant evidence of legislative intent and process. This slip-bill is unrecorded with no copies in auction records nor in OCLC. Unlike so many of the Soviet propaganda books where the reality is far removed from that depicted in the books this work demonstrates a reality which was that in the Soviet Union women had in fact reached a point where many if not all were availed of the same opportunities given to men. Early (Pennsylvania?) manuscript ownerships of Mary S. Grubb and Mrs. Albert E. Landis. Called the Eighth Edition on the title page. On the half-title is a notice, printed in black letter, not frequently mentioned in descriptions of this edition: "The Profits of this Work are devoted to the Support of the Foreign Mission from America." Harriet Newell made the passage to India from America as a young wife and missionary in 1812 at the age of 19. She and her husband arrived in Calcutta in late June, but reembarked for France that October. On the voyage a daughter was born but died within a week. Harriet subsequently fell ill and died in France seven weeks later. The majority of the text is taken from Harriet's often high spirited letters and journals. She describes the ocean voyage in detail. Leonard Woods was among the founders of the American Tract Society in 1814 and American Temperance Society in 1826. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! PA 55‎

Spine toned label rubbed but legible one small stain on front board. Internally clean and sound. No dust jacket. Elizabeth Cabot Putnam was the daughter of Harvard neurologist James Jackson Putnam. She graduated from Radcliffe in 1910 and in 1917 went to Paris where she worked as a secretary for the American Expeditionary Force's Air Service and as a Red Cross volunteer. Her letters home to her family discuss both her work and her general experiences as a young woman in a foreign country at war. Occasionally she comes across as a breezy society girl rather than someone viewing the horrors of war but at other times she is clearly deeply affected. Finally getting to rest after working at a hospital until three AM she looks out a window at the beautiful sky and writes "It was more than one could bear with equanimity -- so heavenly outside and so horrible inside -- all the blood and the hacked-up flesh and the thought of how each one is going to suffer when he gets out of ether." She cared for French soldiers ar the American Ambulance Hospital in Paris and for wounded Marines at a hospital in Neuilly. Very scarce. <br/><br/>Attracted by the ideals of the "Declaration of Independence" Fanny Wright traveled extensively through the U.S.A. tracking how those ideals were being realized. In France who became almost like a daughter to Gen. Lafayette. She and her sister returned to America and with Lafayette were guests of Jefferson at Monticello. Later as a U.S. citizen she founded the Nashoba commune in Tennessee in anticipation of emancipation. She visited New York and Philadelphia West Point Niagara Falls Lake Errie and on to Lower Canada Montreal Lake Champlain Burlington Vermont Washington D.C. to Virginia with many observations along the way. This edition has a dedication to Lafayette by the translator who also supplied a new translation. Vol. 1 ends with remarks upon Morris Birkbeck's letters about the Illinois country. All in all Fanny Wright became one of the most remarkable women of the first half of the 19th century: among other accomplishments being the first woman to write this work the first travelogue by a woman. ‎1942. United States Department of Labor Women's Bureau publication on equal pay for women during World War II documents federal efforts to address wage disparities as women entered wartime industry in large numbers. Equal Pay for Women in War Industries 1942 issued by the Women's Bureau of the U.S. Department of Labor argues for wage equity for women performing skilled industrial work essential to wartime production. The publication appears alongside a wartime recruitment poster encouraging men and women to enlist in the United States Army and the Women's Army Corps. Together the two pieces record the federal government's mobilization of women for both industrial labor and military service during the national emergency created by the global conflict.<br /> <br /> United States Department of Labor Women's Bureau. Equal Pay for Women in War Industries. Washington D.C.: Government Printing Office 1942. Bulletin No. 196. Accompanied by a wartime recruitment poster encouraging enlistment in the United States Army and the Women's Army Corps with the slogan "Find adventure by enlisting in the U.S. Army and Women's Army Corps." The Women's Bureau bulletin advocates equal compensation for women working in wartime industry and emphasizes their role as wage earners and skilled workers contributing to the national defense economy. The recruitment poster visually promotes wartime military participation among both male and female volunteers.<br /> <br /> World War II dramatically expanded the participation of American women in both industrial labor and military service as millions entered factories offices and auxiliary military units to support the war effort. The Women's Bureau played a central role in advocating improved wages and working conditions for female workers who filled positions traditionally held by men serving overseas. Federal statistics from the wartime period illustrate the wage disparities the bulletin sought to address with skilled women workers earning substantially less than male workers performing comparable labor in defense industries. The establishment of the Women's Army Corps in 1943 further integrated women into the military structure replacing the earlier Women's Army Auxiliary Corps and allowing women to serve in a broader range of administrative technical and logistical roles.
