Texas author Martin's first novel and first in the Texana Jones Native American Mystery Series. WINNER OF THE WESTERN WRITERS OF AMERICA Medicine Pipe Bearer Award. "he borderland between Texas and Mexico along the Rio Grande comes alive in this absorbing debut featuring Texana Jones the owner of a trading post and her veterinarian husband Clay. So when reclusive Rhea Fair a curandera or healing woman is found murdered in a similar manner Jones is determined to get to the bottom of it. Fair once owner of a large ranch became a healer and herbalist after her sons were arrested for drug smuggling and fled across the border to Mexico while out on bail. Just before Ortega-Deed died Fair had gone to her for some kind of legal advice. Fair afraid of a client with the evil eye had also seen a clairvoyant and had sent off a long letter only days before she was murdered. Jones tracks down the identity of Fair's last client a journalist now also missing who was writing a book about the curandera.Getting help in her investigation from both sides of the border Jones must also deal with her husband's campaign to stem a rabies epidemic and with multimillionaire rancher Robert Darke's plans for a lavish fiesta and the archeological project he is financing on his property. Nicknaming the corpse Uncle George Deb quickly makes a connection between George and a missing genealogist. When their fingerprints don't match she's perplexed. Then she learns that a San Francisco mortuary is missing a corpse that was shipped to Texas. NY: St Martins Press 1994. 1st ed. Fine in dust jacket rubbed at extremeties nicked at spine head and foot. Salt Lake City setting. "Detective Deb Ralston has promised her husband Harry that she'll happily forget work for three weeks and concentrate on relaxing sightseeing picknicking - they'll have a real family vacation although taking a teenager his girlfriend a toddler and a pit bull by van from Fort Worth Texas to Salt Lake City Utah can't be all that relaxing. The Ralstons settle into Georgina Grafton's bed-and-breakfast in Salt Lake City. But while sightseeing in Gilgal Sculpture Garden on the trip's second day they find the body of Georgina's sister Alexandra who has been killed by a fist-sized rock aimed at the back of her head. Georgina tells them that Alexandra a victim of multiple personality disorder was a handful but she was certainly not dangerous enough to murder. Or was she While Deb may be out of her jurisdiction she's not out of her league: Because their grieving hostess trusts them she and Harry volunteer to help Salt Lake City Police Detective Charlie Sosa with the case. Promising not to get too involved because she wouldn't want to put her family in jeopardy - and anyway she is supposed to be on vacation - Deb investigates Alexandra's life and her family's tragic past until she learns enough to make her a target for the killer. Following her most personal case in The Day That Dusty Died Deb again works overtime to balance the demands placed on her by her dangerous job her overflowing family and murder - which she can't seem to leave behind." -- Publidher. Martin, Lee [Pseud of Ann Wingate]
THE MENSA MURDERS
N.Y.: St. Martin's 1990. 1st ed. Fine in dust jacket. The 7th installment for police detective Deb Ralston. Fort Worth Texas locale. Fort Worth police detective Deb Ralston returns to solve a string of murders in this lively procedural. The first fatality Jane Stevenson is assumed to have been a victim of her obesity and heart problems but Deb shows otherwise. Examining the strangled woman's past for possible motives Deb learns that Jane a seeming nonentity had been a member of the Mensa society for people with very high IQs. Believing the killer might murder again Deb tries to warn other female Mensa members who are living alone. Unfortunately for Corie Meeks she is too late. In searching Corie's home Deb finds a photograph of psychiatrist Bradley Graves who had also known Jane. Corie's infatuation with the handsome doctor raises troubling questions; then the murder of still a third woman another Mensa member suggests the murderer may be focusing on the victims' clothing not their minds. As often happens in actual police work the real tension does not build up until the grisly denouement yet Martin's Death Warmed Over knowledge of police procedure makes this a satisfying diverting read." -- Publishers Weekly.
