Monfredo, Miriam G.
THROUGH A GOLD EAGLE: A Glynis Tryon Mystery
New York NY U.S.A.: Berkley Publishing Group 1996. 1st edition with complete number line beginning with 1. Fine in near fine dust jacket not price clipped in protective mylar cover. "Monfredo The Seneca Falls Inheritance etc. scores with another compelling mid-19th century mystery starring librarian/feminist Glynis Tryon. The sinuous plot skillfully incorporates significant political and social changes of the time from women's suffrage to banking reform and Isaac Singer's revolutionary sewing machine. In May 1859 after a year's visit with her brother's family in Illinois Glynis returns to Seneca Falls N.Y. bringing along her niece Emma. A man is murdered on their train shortly after handing her a pouch containing money and a ring and mentioning Seneca Falls. Back home Glynis is absorbed in a variety of problems: her assistant has wasted library funds on romance novels; counterfeit money and weapons thefts are rife; seven more people die; and her old swain Sheriff Cullen Stuart has a new lady friend. Monfredo deftly gathers these subplots into a coherent tale that leads to a finale in a panther den. There Glynis corners the mastermind responsible for the crimes solving a case which is tied to funding John Brown's attack on Harper's Ferry and to attempts by abolitionists and the English to hasten a civil war. Elizabeth Cady Stanton Frederick Douglass and John Brown appear but don't overshadow the commanding cast of fictional characters including a new romantic interest for Glynis." -- Publishers Weekly. On an icy morning in Paris in January 1943230 French women resisters were rounded up from the Gestapo detention camps and sent on a train to Auschwitz - the only trainin the four years of German occupationto take women of the resistance to a death camp. The youngest was a schoolgirl of 15the eldest a farmer's wife of 68; there were among them teachers biochemistssales girlssecretarieshousewives and university lecturers. Caroline Moorehead's remarkable new book is the story of these women - the first time it has been told.It is about who they werehow and why they joined the resistancehow they were captured and treated by the French police and the Gestapotheir journey to Auschwitz and their daily life in the death camps - and about what it was like for the 49 survivors when they returned to France.Six of the women were still alive in 2010 and able to tell their stories. What they had to say - and this was confirmed by the children of those who died - was that great affection and camaraderie grew up among the group. They became friendsand it was precisely this friendship that kept so many of them alive. They supported and cared for one anotherworked togethershared everythingwatched out for each other and faced the horror together.Friendshipalmost as much as luckdictated survival.Drawing on interviews with survivors and their familieson GermanFrench and Polish archivesand on documents held by World War Two resistance organisations'A Train in Winter' covers a harrowing part of our history but isultimatelya portrait of ordinary peopleof bravery and enduranceand of particular qualities of female friendship.
