August 1958 in Bellême, Département Orne) war ein französischer Schriftsteller. 1937 wurde er mit dem Nobelpreis für Literatur ausgezeichnet. ... Sein erstes publiziertes Werk wurde 1908 der formal konventionelle autobiografische Roman Devenir!, in dem es um die Autorwerdung eines jungen Notars geht. Als Privatdruck publiziert, erzielte es zwar keinen Verkaufserfolg, bekam jedoch einige positive Kritiken. Erstes von einem Verlag angenommenes Werk des Autors war 1910 die Erzählung L'Une de nous. 1910 kehrte Martin du Gard zurück zu der Form, mit der er schon länger experimentiert hatte und die ihm der Moderne besonders angemessen schien: einer Montage von Dialogen, Briefen, Tagebuchaufzeichnungen, Protokollen u. ä. mit kurzen, sie verbindenden auktorial erzählten Zwischentexten. In dieser Manier schrieb er den Roman Jean Barois, der vor dem historischen Hintergrund der Dreyfus-Affäre und der heiß umstrittenen Trennung von Staat und Kirche (1905) den Konflikt des Protagonisten zwischen szientistischem Agnostizismus und traditioneller Frömmigkeit darstellt, d. h. einen Konflikt, der viele bürgerliche Zeitgenossen und auch den Autor selber plagte. Von einem ersten Verleger (Grasset) abgelehnt, erschien das Werk 1913 dank Schulfreund Gallimard im Verlag der jungen Zeitschrift Nouvelle Revue Française (NRF), hatte dann trotz oder auch wegen seiner avantgardistischen Form beachtlichen Erfolg und verschaffte seinem Autor Anschluss an den Kreis um André Gide und Jacques Copeau, die Hauptherausgeber der NRF. Zurück in Paris, half er Copeau das Théâtre du Vieux-Colombier wiederzueröffnen. 1920 - es war die Epoche der langen "romans-fleuve" - entwarf er den Plan für einen großangelegten Familienroman mit dem Titel Les Thibault. Die Handlung sollte von 1905 bis in die jeweilige Schreib-Gegenwart reichen (letztlich bis ca. 1940), überspannte schließlich aber nur die Zeit bis 1918. Die Hauptrollen in dem formal eher konventionellen Werk spielen der großbürgerliche und autoritär-konservative Witwer Oscar Th. sowie seine beiden Söhne Antoine, der zu Beginn schon als junger Arzt arbeitet, und Jacques, der anfangs noch 14-jähriger Schüler ist. Der die Handlung tragende Generations- und Mentalitäten-Konflikt kontrastiert vor allem Oscar, den hypermoralischen, z. B. die Sexualität tabuisierenden Patriarchen alter Schule, und Jacques, der wegen überschwänglicher Liebesbriefe an einen Freund vom Vater als homosexuell gefährdet betrachtet und in ein Erziehungsheim gesteckt wird, später dank dem stets vermittelnden Antoine aber daraus freikommt und sich zum pazifistischen linken Intellektuellen entwickelt. Die Handlung schließt, nachdem zwei der Protagonisten, Vater Oscar und Sohn Jacques, schon vorher gestorben bzw. umgekommen sind, mit dem tragischen Ende auch des pflichtbewussten Philanthropen Antoine, der im Krieg Opfer eines Giftgasangriffs geworden ist und sich, unheilbar leidend, das Leben nimmt. Die schließlich acht Bände des Romans sind: Le Cahier gris (1922), Le Pénitencier (1922), La Belle Saison (1923), La Consultation (1928), La Sorellina (1928), La Mort du père (1929), L'Été 1914 (1936) und Épilogue (1939). Den 1930 fast fertiggestellten ursprünglichen Band 7, L'Appareillage, vernichtete Martin du Gard, als er, auch durch einen schweren Autounfall zusammen mit seiner Frau (1931), in eine Krise geraten war und die Arbeit an den Thibaults einzustellen gedachte. ? ‎Das Aquarell von Alice Horodisch Garnmann (1905 - 1984) zeigt den Wohnraum des Herrenhauses von Etter in Haiko. Das Blatt ist am unteren linken Blattrand in Bleistift betitelt, signiert und datiert. - Die gebürtige Berlinerin studierte an der Vereinigten Staatsschule für freie und angewandte Kunst bei Oskar Hermann Werner Hadank. Ihr ausgewiesenes Spezialgebiet war die Gestaltung von Exlibris. Mit ihrem Ehemann, dem Buchhändler und Verleger Abraham Horodisch, ging Garnmann nach der Machtergreifung der Nationalsozialisten zunächst nach Amsterdam, 1942 dann in die Schweiz ins Exil. Nach Kriegsende kehrte das Paar zurück nach Amsterdam, wo Garnmann u. a. sämtliche Drucksachen für das Unternehmen ihres Mannes gestaltete. - Das Blatt ist leicht angerändert. Auf der Rückseite Montagespuren. Sonst sehr schön komponiertes Blatt in harmonischer Farbigkeit.‎
