Edmonds and depicts a setting of a happy couple before a fire. The text of the pamphlet includes an annual report the results of a lottery of 51 works of including artwork by Thomas Cole John Audubon J. Catalogue of the Officers and Students of Harvard University for the Academical Year 1829-1830
Cambridge: Hilliard and Brown 1829. First Edition. Wraps. Good. 4-1/2 x 7" sewn plain-paper later wrappers pp. 24 wraps soiled the whole pamphlet faintly creased vertically but good and sound with intriguing pencil notations throughout see below. A straightforward listing of the adminstrators faculty and students under- and post-grad at Harvard in the fall of 1829 rendered interesting by the penciled notations on several of its pages. The flyleaf contains a name indecipherable to our eyes and a location Round Hill which was a short-lived 1823-1834 secondary school located in Northampton Massachusetts founded by George Bancroft and Joseph Cogswell on the European model particularly in the mode of the German 'gymnasia' to compete with existing academies such as Philips Exeter and Andover. Further penciled notes indicate which of the students had matriculated from Round Hill with a running tally 6 of 48 seniors 12 of 70 juniors 3 of 76 sophomores 3 of 55 freshmen. What about this makes our ears prick up Round Hill's demise was in no small part due to a conundrum its founders were unable to solve to wit: the education they provided was so superior that their students were TOO well prepared for college putting them directly in conflict with the admissions procedures at Harvard and Yale. While the Round Hill boys were already proficient in the Greek Latin and mathematics being taught freshmen and sophomores and even juniors at the ivies those institutions refused to allow the younger students to skip ahead unless they paid out of pocket for all four years of college. The economics were against the school -- either a Round Hill boy ponied up and spent two years cooling his heels until he learned something new or he went out into the world with the education but without the prestigious degree. The notations here suggest that someone in real time while Round Hill was still in existence was keeping score trying to make the argument. But in the end parents wearied of the inherent conflict and the preparatory schools which tailored their curricula to the university system won the day. Hilliard and Brown unknown books

B Ives. The collection is a mixture of European masters and American artists including many portraits mostly of the Wadsworth family views of Ancient Rome historical paintings representing American independence and American and European landscapes. The Wadsworth Museum is one of Americas most important cultural institutions. It was founded in 1842 and was one of the first institutions to purchase and import European art into the United States. In addition to paintings the Gallery hosted the Hartford Public Library and the Connecticut Historical Society and changed its name to the Wadsworth Athenaeum. Folio. 360 x 2140 mm. 14 ¼ x 9 ½ inches. 4 340 4 pp.; 10 608 8 pp. Small woodcut vignettes on the title-pages some use of typographical ornaments to separate chapter sections. Paper foxed and lightly brown throughout otherwise is good condition. Bound in contemporary calf over wooden boards clasps missing; rebacked. Originally published in Dordrecht in 1660 this is the Second American edition based on the edition printed in Ephrata in 1748 which is rarely found in the trade. The title translates in part "The Bloody Theater or Martyrs' Mirror of the Defenseless Christians . . . Who suffered and Died for the Testimony of Jesus. . . from the time of Christ to the Year A. D. 1660." It was compiled by Thieleman Braght from chronicles memorials testimonies recording the history of martyrdom with particular emphasis on the persecution of the Mennonite communities in Germany and northern Europe. "Joseph Ehrenfried 1783-1862 was printer publisher and translator. Born in Germany he worked first in the city of Lancaster then Harrisburg and Allentown and then back to Lancaster. Known best for his newspaper work for a time he was the 'German state printer' meaning he was the official German-language printer for the state of Pennsylvania." A note found in the blog The Black Art by Lee J. Stoltzfus suggests that Ehrenfried went out of business as a result of the cost associated with the publication of this gigantic printing venture. Uneven trimming to right & left side. <br/><br/>A rather detailed obituary of this one-time Methodist resident of Indiana & Kentucky where she made her name primarily as a teacher. e.g. "In March 1809 they removed to Touseytown immediately opposite Lawrenceburg where Mrs. Lane again opened a school which increased to seventy scholars. In addition to the usual branches of an English education she taught various kinds of needle work besides superintending her house-hold duties. None but a woman of great energy could have gone through with so much. Photograph Album Displaying the Plant Machinery and Production Processes of a Factory in Occupied Japan 1947
Japan Hydrogen Industry Co Ltd. Onahama Fukushima Prefecture Japan 1947. Cloth album 12 x 8.5 inches containing 33 silver gelatin photographs mounted to rectos only with printed captions in English and Japanese on facing pages. Very good. In the aftermath of World War II the Allied powers recognized the importance of stabilizing the Japanese economy as part of a larger effort to prevent Japan's remilitarization and stave off the spread of communism. With the assistance of foreign aid the Japanese government invested heavily in strengthening its industrial and manufacturing capacity. Economic development efforts in the coal-producing region of Fukushima Prefecture centered on the construction of chemical factories and related infrastructure. The Japan Hydrogen Industry Company also known as Nihon Suiso Company which had been founded in the port city of Onahama in 1937 became the core of the industrialization effort in the region after the war. This album produced in 1947 was likely used in an effort to attract American investment. The company was involved in the gasification of pulverized coal producing-depending on the exact process-coal gas water gas or syngas all combustible gases used for municipal lighting and heating prior to the large-scale production of natural gas as well as the production of ammonium sulfate and methanol. The album shows the plant's coke room; gas generators compressors and storage tanks; carbon monoxide converters; pumps for moving chemicals in solution; centrifuges; acid cooling process; ammonium sulphate storage room; and several parts of the methyl alcohol plant boiler turbo generators distiller machine shop storage drums. There is also a view of the entire seaside factory and one of the company's business offices. Over the next few decades Fukushima Prefecture underwent significant industrial development and became Japan's largest energy-supplying region. Whether this album made a specific contribution to that growth by garnering investment we do not know. But it is an interesting artifact of the early stages of the recovery that would become known as the Japanese Economic Miracle. unknown books

Moderate foxing throughout frontis portrait of the author lacking but still a good of a scarce book. The Appendix is titled "Times of Refreshing; or A Narrative of a Revival of Religion at Patchogue L.I. in 1834 & 1835." This account of a pious woman whose selfless devotion to the spiritual nurturing of others led to spiritual renewal in her community reflects common sentiments about the social role of women in nineteenth century America generally and particularly during the period of revival and reform known as the Second Great Awakening. Women were seen as critical to maintaining social order by providing moral guidance to their families and serving as role models of Christian piety. Thus Gammage writes that while Louisa Liscum "endeavored to to utmost of her ability to promote the present comfort and happiness of her children she regarded their spiritual and eternal interests as supremely important and as demanding her first and chief attention." Moreover as she prayed for the spiritual well-being of her own family "her tears were witnessed in the house of God" and "many of the careless became deeply anxious about their own eternal interests and came forward in the prayer meetings to request an interest in the prayers of God's people." Beale was a sailor solder and hero of the Mexican War explorer and Indian superintendent who shared friendship and adventures with John C. Fremont Kit Carson and Ulysses S. Grant among others. He helped charter a new more humanitarian policy toward native Americans in the 1850s supervised the construction of a transcontinental wagon road and experimented with the use of camels in the Southwest. The prospectus says of this volume: "While the book constitutes an objective appraisal of Beale and the time in which he lived the authors succeed in presenting much more than a dry tabulation of facts.
