Long Swamp Florida: n.p. 1863. Letter. Good. Manuscript letter written on blue paper. Approx. 10" x 8". 1 page of content. On the back side is written "J L McGahagin Seller Jany 25th 1863". Hand writing is difficult to read at times. Letter has multiple folds. The paper is in good condition with some small splits at the folds. Transcription below:<br /> <br /> Long Swamp Fla Jan 25th 1863<br /> Mr. H. L. Flast<br /> Dear Sir<br /> <br /> I received your letter with draft of $1500 on Maj Teasdale which I will not want to use at percent - 8 I was disappointed in getting the cotton at or near Wacahoota persons in that section have put is up to 45 cts I have about 15 Bales seed Cotton and 12 gined at Home. I will tomorrow to haul down more seed cotton which I think I will enough to make 20 Bales I went to Gainesville and got the draft of 1900 from Dawkins I will have to pay for cotton if I get any more at 'presant' I to pay 'presant' prices - I have not heard from the teacher as yet that you were to and we have an application from Miss Baker for a friends of hers and are waiting to hear from you let us hear soon<br /> <br /> Yours Respectfully signed J L McGahagin<br /> <br /> From find a grave dot com:<br /> <br /> His first wife Sarah Adeline Eubanks McGahagin 1830-1856 is buried on the north side of him. On his other side is his second wife Margaret Jane Leitner McGahagin 1838-1896. His brother William Emmit McGahagin and his brother’s wife Sarah Eliza McCormick McGahagin are buried about fifteen feet south of J.L. McGahagin's tombstone.<br /> Joshua L. McGahagin was a farmer a saw-mill owner and owned real estate. He owned property in Brazil as well as in this country. He owned a sawmill on Lake Weir. He would barge logs across the lake take them by ox cart to the Ocklawaha River where they were barged to Jacksonville. He was a Captain in the Confederate Army.<br /> <br /> "Longswamp was the name applied to a large area which extended from the site of the present Belleview south and southwestward to the Withlacoochee River. A post office under Joshua L. McGahagin was established for this region on August 29 1846. Frequently the office was in the home of the postmaster and mail was carried by rider once each week."<br /> <br /> "In August of 1850 panic followed after finding an Indian camp nearby on the Withlacoochee. As all Indians were supposedly within a reservation in the Everglades wild rumors were circulated. On the McGahagin plantation log barricades were hurriedly erected and settlers from isolated homes rushed here for protection. But the alarm was unjustified. An intensive search disclosed only eleven Indians. These Indians were soon deported back to the Everglades."<br /> <br /> These excerpts were taken from a history of Marion County called "Ocali Country Kingdom of the Sun" by Eloise Robinson Mrs. Roy V. Ott and Louis Hickman Chazal.<br /> <br /> One day several years after the Civil War a man who had served under Joshua Lucas MaGahagin's C.S.A. command entered the home of his eldest son William "Billy" Emmit. He saw his father's framed photograph over the mantel and exclaimed "Why that's the Ole Warhorse!"<br /> <br /> Joshua left for South America in 1868 taking one of his daughters Lula with him. He was back in Marion County in 1870 as he was listed in the Census that year.<br /> <br /> After surviving the Civil War and a trip to Brazil spending hours on horseback Joshua died when he was thrown from a horse. n.p. unknown

Lightly creased generally crease to bottom third with small tear to right hand margin very light foxing mainly to borders small scuff to top right hand corner but generally quite bright and clean. "The top half of the poster has a photographic image or movie still showing a large room full of costumed figures lying on the floor. The background of the bottom half of the poster is a pink and black topographical map. In the centre of the poster there is a large photographic image of a woman in lingerie she has the letters: "H A T E" tattooed on the fingers of her left hand. There is a white field that divides the poster across the centre horizontally and obscures the female figures pubic area. The field has a photo of a button with the text: "Kill For Peace / Kill For Freedom / Kill Vietnamese / Kill Kill" the rest of the field has the text: "In every government on earth there is some trace / of human weakness some germ of corruption / and degeneracy. Thomas Jefferson". The female figures right leg is partially obscured by a round photographic image of a male figure dressed as an Egyptian Pharaoh and female figures in the foreground reaching up to him" Oakland Museum of California. Collection of seven provincially printed broadsides relating to the Crimean war all printed in 1854 or 1855 the smallest measuring approximately 170mm x 370mm in size and the rest approximately 245mm x 370mm. All lightly browned some light foxing and light creasing a few small nicks and tears one 'News From Sebastopol!' with small chip to left hand margin and small hole to centre catching a few letters but with no loss of sense 'Statistics and Statements' with loss to bottom right hand corner but no loss of text 'Bombardment of Sebastopol' is laid on to linen. 'Bombardment of Sebastopol' was printed by T. & W. Plant in Clare Street Nottingham possibly descendants of James Plant see BBTI; the remainder were printed by Thomas Stevenson in Wheeler-Gate probably the same printer as the Thomas Stevenson & Co. located in Middle Pavement Nottingham in 1847 see BBTI. A mixture of news from the Crimean war which was one of the first conflicts to be extensively documented in reports and photographs. The topics here include death numbers notable events and diplomatic developments and are taken from a number of sources including European and Russian papers. Lord Raglan is noted in one as "a good rider and does not appear to feel the want of the arm which he left at Waterloo". All are unrecorded in Library Hub. First Edition. Unbound. Good. Folio. August 1855. . Manuscript map in watercolour and ink on linen 41 x 54 cm framed. Some spotting.<br /> Manuscript plan on linen of the siege of Sebastopol: a fine and unusual map drawn by Sergeant Neubourg according to the instructions of Captain Koch of the French First Foreign Infantry Regiment. It shows the location of the allied troops on the banks of the Chernaya River near the city of Sebastopol which was besieged by the allies from September 1854 until the end of August 1855. The capture of the Redan Redoubt one of two key strong-points in the defences of Sebastopol by French troops including the Legion prompted the Russian evacuation and surrender of the city in August 1855 after an eleven month siege. This was the final episode in the Crimean War which ended officially in February 1856. Despite being heavily involved in the fighting more legionnaires succumbed to the deprivations of camp life notably the bitter cold than died in battle.<br /> August, 1855. unknown

With letterpress text providing military and geographical information.<br /><br />The war in Crimea took place in 1854-1855 and saw the Russian Imperial army oppose the allied troops of France Britain and the Ottoman Empire in a series of battles that culminated in the famous siege of Sebastopol Sevastopol in the winter of 1854 and the subsequent defeat of the Russian Army. First edition of this detailed and influential report on the Crimean War and the state of European fortifications and armaments during the conflict. The Crimean War was intently watched in the future Confederate states with southern newspapers and supporters sympathizing with the Russians. The European Military Commission dispatched by Secretary of War Jefferson Davis included future Union generals such as George B. McClellan and Major Alfred Mordecai. Delafield covered all aspects of the developments during the Crimean War including the tactical impact of rifled muskets field fortifications improved saddles hospital wagons and medical tents as well as detailing Russian sea mines and the Anglo-French ironclads used at Kinburn. This work published on the eve of the Civil War offered an invaluable handbook for both Northern and Southern commanders as well as cautionary observations. James and 6 numbered plates on 5 folding sheets of stronger paper; repeated lithographic title title table of contents 638 pp. 1 l.; vii including title 273 pp. 1 l.; atlas of 16 plates on 12 folding sheets of stronger paper one on thiner -- in all 22 plates plates lithographed by H. James under the direction of Cameron numbered I-XX with XVIa and including a rarer 'Sheet III' on thiner paper some with outline hand-colour; light spotting to text maps with occasional soiling some folds with short tears. Contemporary red cloth covers with blind-stamped panel decoration flat spines lettered in gilt; spines rubbed and faded with shelfmark labels to foot slipcase strengthened.<br /> First edition of this large work: a very good copy complete with the 3 volumes of text and all maps plans and views of Sevastopol - despite the slipcase label showing a somewhat inattentive collation by the H.M. Stationery Office stating "Note.-This Volume is incomplete no perfect copies are available for issue."<br />Sir Elphinstone 1829-90 was born in Livonia now Latvia and was awarded the Victoria Cross in June 1855 for fearless conduct during the Crimean War. At the final assault on Sebastopol on 8 September he was wounded by a splinter on the left side of the head and lost an eye. First edition; landscape folio 37.1 x 56.8 cm; hand-coloured lithographed title with vignette 8 hand-coloured lithograph plates on 6 leaves one folding armorial bookplate to front pastedown some light spotting and fraying to title and final folding plate with margins and fold repaired the rest of the plates have only very light marginal spotting and remain bright; original morocco backed cloth boards title lettered in gilt to upper boards a very good copy.<br /> Very rare. There is no copy in the Blackmer Atabey or Abbey collections.<br /><br />Henry Charles Cunliffe-Owen 1821-1867 had a distinguished military career from 1839 until 1850 when he accepted a civilian appointment under the Royal Commission for the Great Exhibition of 1851. He rejoined the army on the outbreak of the Crimean war and saw Sevastapol but was wounded and invalided home before the heavy fighting of the siege. After the War he rose in rank to Lieutenant-Colonel and amongst his achievements was the fortification of Devonport.<br /><br />The illustrations depict: The Chapel in the Caves at Inkermann title vignette; 2 views of the dockyard at Balaklava; Sebastopol from the picket battery; Harbour of Sebastopol from the Crow's Nest Inkermann; Greek battery Sebastopol; Monastery of St. George and the Valley of Baidar; Sebastopol from the 2nd Parallell Right Attack folding plate.<br /> Bobins 207; not in Blackmer Abbey or Atabey. <p>Salisbury: James Bennett Printer Two single sided printed broadsides approximately 255mm x 320mm in size. Lightly browned and very lightly creased but generally quite bright and clean. Relating to the Sebastopol Committee of 1855 relating to the condition of the British Army in Crimea. The Radical M.P. John Arthur Roebuck led calls for an inquiry into the state of the army the House of Commons endorsed this and Lord Aberdeen's government interpreted this as a vote of no confidence and resigned. Sidney Herbert the Member for South Wilts. and had been responsible for the War Office during the Crimean War. He was also instrumental in getting Florence Nightingale to lead a team of nurses out to Crimea. The printer James Bennett of Salisbury fl. 1851 also printed the Salisbury & Winchester Journal. <p><i><b>Collection of 23 original edicts February 1896-September 1898 by the Captain Generals of Cuba 19 by General Valeriano Weyler 4 by General Ramón Blanco the last Spanish Captain General of Cuba. The edicts concern the attempts by the Spanish authorities to control the insurrection. They range from Weyler's efforts to concentrate the population in fortified encampments a measure often considered the precursor of concentration camps to Blanco´s establishing of a ceasefire in 1898.</b></i></p><p>23 ORIGINAL EDICTS; some manuscript annotations and the stamp of the Army of Cuba on some communiqués. The collection includes three items of related ephemera.</p><p>Notable collection of original edicts from Spanish authorities who participated in the Cuban War of Independence and attempted unsuccessfully to end the insurrection. The Cuban War of Independence the War of 1895 is the name given to the final Cuban war against Spanish domination. It is one of the last American wars against the Kingdom of Spain. The war began on 24 February 1895 with a simultaneous insurrection in 35 Cuban localities known as Grito de Oriente formerly known as Grito de Baire and ended in 1898 with the surrender of the Spanish Colonial army to the U.S. military advance with the assistance and support of <i>mambises</i>members of the Independentist Cuban army in the conflict known as the Spanish-American War. </p><p>Details on each of the edicts available on request. Havana: R. Testar 1890. Albumen photograph on cardstock mount image measuring 7 1/4 x 4 1/2 inches on 8 3/4 x 5 1/2 inch mount. A view of an American warship in Havana harbor likely taken prior to the outbreak of hostilities between the United States and Spain in early 1898. The photographers Leach and Patterson of Calle San Rafael published several views of Cuba at this time mostly of bucolic scenes around Havana and its environs. The American cruiser is similar in design to the U.S.S. Maine with slight differences - two smokestacks instead of three. An excellent example with minor wear to mount and fine image. R. Puerto-Principe Cuba: Imp. el Progreso-Soledad January 11 1899. Good. Broadside 11.75 x 8.25 inches. Old folds minor chip at top left corner uniformly tanned and somewhat tender. An unrecorded general order issued in Spanish by the American "Jefe de Estado Mayor" Chief of Staff John E. McMahon during the military occupation of Cuba in the Spanish-American War. The order stipulates that a paragraph in a previous order prohibiting the auction of mortgaged property in the province of Puerto-Principe until January 1 1900 is hereby repealed and any further instructions on this matter will come from the Army's General Headquarters in Havana. McMahon issued several general orders during the American Army's occupation of Cuba and all appear to be rare. An interesting artifact from America's expansionist period with no other copies in OCLC auction history or the trade. Imp. el Progreso-Soledad, January 11 unknown

Small Collection of Photographs from Cuba During the Spanish-American War
Puerto Principe 1898. Good plus. Thirteen photographs each approximately 4 x 5 inches on original card mounts. A few images rather faded. Light edge wear to mounts. Some photo credits in negatives; each with manuscript caption on mount verso. An interesting group of thirteen photographs taken by an amateur military photographer while deployed to Cuba during the Spanish-American War. The photos are centered around Puerto Principe now Camaguey in Central Cuba an unusual location for photos of this genre and focus on natives local architecture and natural views. Crude credits in the negatives of several images attribute the photographs to "Woodward" or "W.D.W" of the "15th U.S.I.B" i.e. 15th U.S. Infantry Battalion . Havana Cuba 1917. Excellent. The Cuban Red Cross Society was formed in 1909 by Dr. Diego Tamayo y Figueredo. In 1917 when this photograph was taken it was headed by Madame Mariana Seva de Menocal wife of then-President Mario GarcÃa Menocal who was in office 1913–1921. Cuba had joined the Allies when President Menocal and the Cuban congress declared war on Germany in April of 1917; under Madame de Menocal the Cuban Red Cross raised $1000000 in cash to open and staff a hospital in France. This photograph shows ten women in Red Cross dresses holding what appear to be donation jars. Description verso reads in part<br /> <br /> “This group of Havana society girls acted as ushers at a recent special Red Cross benefit performance at the National Theatre in Havana of the Cuban Opera for the benefit of the Cuban Red Cross. Their success was so great that they volunteered for similar additional service at various other benefits held for this organization in the Cuban capital.â€. unknown
