‎C’est en pleine Seconde guerre mondiale, le 12 septembre 1940 très exactement, qu’est paru le premier numéro d’ “Indochine”, un hebdomadaire illustré qui n’aura certes pas duré longtemps – le dernier numéro est daté de 1945 – mais qui aura suffisamment marqué les esprits. Politiquement favorable au général Decoux et au Gouvernement de Vichy, son intérêt est cependant capital pour la connaissance de l'Indochine dans les années 40. Les articles touchent à tous les sujets, sociaux, ethnologiques, historiques, artistiques et culturels. Les très nombreuses illustrations photographiques, sur les campagnes, les monuments modernes et anciens, les hommes et les coutumes, font de cette revue un important témoignage de la vie indochinoise de cette époque. “Indochine” était en fait une publication de l'association Alexandre de Rhodes. De nombreuses figures de proue de l’École française d’Extrême-Orient y ont publié des articles. Louis Malleret, Paul Lévy, Louis Bezacier, Paul Boudet, Nguyên Van Huyên, Duong Quang Hàm, Nguyên Tiên Lang, Dang Phuc Thông, Trân Van Giap... « Il y avait sans doute une volonté sincère, de leur part, d’établir des liens entre Français et Vietnamiens », constate Vu Trong Dai. « Mais il y a quand même beaucoup de paternalisme là-dedans... Ils sont prêts à vanter les charmes des cultures qu’ils côtoient, mais sans oublier d’y aller de leur petit couplet sur la mission civilisatrice de la France qui et que… Ils essaient de se réapproprier notre histoire et notre culture... Signature in good condition. Pugh was an attorney and member of the Confederate Congress.<br /> <br /> From wikipedia:<br /> <br /> Pugh was born in Burke County Georgia and moved to Alabama in 1824. He received a collegiate education studied law under John Gill Shorter and was admitted to the bar in 1841. He began to practise in Eufaula Alabama. He was a presidential elector in 1848 and 1856. He represented Alabama's second district as a Democrat in the United States House of Representatives from December 5 1859 until January 21 1861 when he retired upon the secession of his state.<br /> <br /> He then served as an officer in the Confederate States Army. He was subsequently elected to be the representative from Alabama's 8th District to both the First Confederate Congress and the Second Confederate Congress serving from February 22 1862 until the surrender in 1865. Pugh served on the House Committee on Military Affairs throughout both Congresses where he was a prominent critic of C.S. President Jefferson Davis.1<br /> <br /> Following the war he returned to his law practice. Upon the restoration of his citizenship Pugh was president of the Democratic state convention of 1874 a delegate to the 1875 state constitutional convention and a presidential elector again in 1876. Original blue boards white & black lettering on front cover punch-sewn in Japanese style at gutter margin w/ white silk braid minor scuffing edgewear very minor staining to lower front cover still VG- copy. First edition of this well-executed series of brush & ink paintings watercolours wash drawings and ink sketches of occupied Japan following World War II by American G.I. artists. While opening with a decidedly jingoistic preface no longer the slant-eyed many-headed yellow monster. . . bespectcacled buck-toothed enigma. . . the sketches reveal a quiet sympathy and influence of Japanese art techniques. The artists included Hoffmaster was a longtime commercial artist and illustrator for US News & World Report National Geographic and art instructor at the Corcoran School of Art who often contributed covers and illustrations to the Changing Times; MacKenzie 1924-2018 noted American craft potter who was heavily influenced by the aesthetic of Shoji Hamada and Korean ceramics often referred to as the “Mingei-sota style;†and Wolsky 1916-1981 noted commercial artist who later became noted illustrator with Woman’s Home Companion Collier’s McCall’s Redbook Esquire Time and Life and noted collector of Modernist art. ‎Japan. Early 20th Century. Colour woodblock fan print 24.5 x 25cm very good copy. This fan-shaped colour woodblock print features a 1894 battle scene from the Sino-Japanese War in Pyongyang. In order to break into the Chinese fortress a group of Japanese solders climbed over a wall opened the gate and led the Japanese troops in. Among the soldiers Harada Jukichi became well-known as one of the bravest returning home to hero's welcome after the war. However he was overwhelmed with numerous visitors which ended up forcing him into serious debt. In order to pay off this debt he travelled throughout Japan re-enacting the fighting and victorious scenes on stage. This print depicts courageous Harada single handed taking on his Chinese enemies who are falling or fleeing. . unknown‎
