‎[MANDIN, Louis].‎

‎[Macleish, Archibald]; Fortune Magazine‎

‎JEWS IN AMERICA‎

‎1st edition thus. Original Wrappers. 8vo. 15 pages. 23 cm. Nazi-era abridged and condensed version of an article originally published in Fortune magazine, and later published by Random House. This booklet presented by the Editors of “Digest and Review”. “The ‘Jewish Problem’ has become violently acute in recent years. What is anti-Semitism? How does it start? Does it exist in the United States? Is it true that Jews control industry, business, public opinion? […] The Editors of ‘Fortune’ undertook to make such an impartial survey. Their conclusions, it is safe to say, were totally unexpected both by Jews and non-Jews. The results of this research, appearing originally in ‘Fortune, ’ were later published in book form by Random House. ” (Publisher’s Description) In reference to the original appearance of this article in ‘Fortune’ Isaac Goldberg writes, in his monograph “The So-Called ‘Protocols of the Elders of Zion’” , “It proves, once again beyond the slightest doubt, that the Jew despite this prominent person or the other, is not anything like the power in national affairs invented by the Protocol-terrorizers. ”(Goldberg, pg 24) Subjects: Jews – United States. Jewish Question. Antisemitism. OCLC lists 13 copies worldwide. Very minimal age toning to wrappers. Bright crisp and clean. Very goodcondition. (HOLO2-116-23)‎

Writing amid the first months of the American Civil War Chapin opens with the immediate purpose of the letter—forwarding “a draft of $240 for int. on the noteâ€â€”before situating the payment within a deteriorating economic landscape: “It is very difficult to get money now even of the best men.†He describes a local economy under strain noting “no market for wool to bring in money†compounded by regional instability “on account of the bank failing and many of the merchants in Medina closing†concluding bluntly: “Terrible bursting times with them.†Even the act of sending funds carries uncertainty as he cautions that “in these times I consider there is a risk in the best of banks.†Alongside these concerns Chapin provides a snapshot of agricultural conditions: “Corn is very backward and short wheat nearly middling grass rather below middling†summing up the situation as “rather tight times as well as troubled times.â€

The most significant portion of the letter however turns to the war itself and the unresolved question of slavery. He writes:

“We hope the end will be well but our nation will have to be humbled. It is well to put down rebellion but it is rather queer that the cause of the trouble must be let entirely alone. The nation will get their eyes open after a while. The President possesses the war power to abolish slavery and Congress possess the power also in my humble opinion and the time will come when they will have to do it unless the south run their heads so hard against the rock as to do it themselves.â€

The letter closes with a brief note on a failed business transaction—“our trade for the sale of the mill fell throughâ€â€”underscoring the economic uncertainty of the moment before returning to family matters. Overall an evocative early Civil War letter by a merchant expressing fears and anxiety for the pending conflict. unknown‎

‎[MAP OF ASIA IN THE PACIFIC WAR].‎

Daitōasensō Hōsō nyusu chōshuyō chizu. The Great East Asia War. Wireless News Listeners' Map.‎

Nihon Hōsō Shuppan Kyōkai. Showa 17 1942. Colour folding map scale 1: 10000000 54.7cm x 79.5cm chronology of building the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere on reverse. Some light browning a little darker at folds and reverse washi repairs to folds on reverse. This colour map of Asia and the Pacific published on 30 January 1942—just one month after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor—offers a striking glimpse into wartime strategy and propaganda. Remarkably despite being produced at the war's outset it accurately anticipated key battlegrounds that would define the conflict. The main map is supplemented by two inset maps: one in the upper right highlighting Japan the Hawaiian Islands and Honolulu and another in the lower left focusing on Singapore with Darwin marked along the lower edge.

The reverse side features a revealing chronological chart titled "Building Great East Asia" documenting Japan's military expansion from the 1931 Manchurian Incident through January 1942 as troops advanced across Southeast Asia. Notably two blank rows were intentionally left at the chart's end anticipating future victories to be recorded as the war progressed—a telling detail that underscores the map's dual role as both strategic document and propaganda tool. An interesting map which combines geographical precision with ideological messaging. . [Nihon Hōsō Shuppan Kyōkai]. unknown‎

An inset map on upper right shows Singapore Borneo Sumatra and Java where battles took place in the area in early 1942. An inset chart on lower left shows various resources and their location including coal tin and iron ore clearly showing that the war was fought over securing resources.
