[Military and War] [Georgia] [James Monroe] [General Andrew Jackson]
Message From the President of the United States Transmitting Information Required by a Resolution of the House of Representatives of December 24 1818 of Certain Correspondence Between the Department of War and the Governor of Georgia; and the Said Department with General Andrew Jackson
Washington City: Printed by E. De Krafft 1819. Wraps. Very good. Disbound wraps approx. 8.5" x 6". 7 pages 1 page blank. Light toning to the contents.

Contents of this brief communication cite James Monroe J. C. Calhoun and an "extract of a letter from Major C. Vandeventer chief clerk to major general Andrew Jackson dated "Department of War June 2d 1818." The contents of page 7 read "Your letters of the 7th of April one without date from Fort Gadsden and on the 26th of April are received. "The President of the United States and the Secretary of War are out of town. The former will return about the 15th instant the latter not before the middle of next month. So soon as the President returns your dispatches together with your order to Major Davis commanding the arrest of captain Wright and a copy of your letter to the governor of Georgia in relation to the horrid and atrocious destruction of the Chehaw village will be laid before him. In the mean time I am advised to communicate the 'opinion' that the trial of captain Wright by court martial is decidedly preferable to a civil prosecution in the federal court." Captain Wright and his Georgia Militia from Twiggs and Jones County attacked a friendly Creek village on the Flint River killing upwards from 5-50 members of the peaceful tribe more source information can be found from the Georgia Historical Quarterly December 1965 article by Merton Coulter. From the Albany Herald - Accounts of the incident now mostly lost to history or obscured by time vary. But most agree that the treachery of Capt. Obed Wright cost the lives of at least seven men one woman and two children although Wright himself estimated that number to be as high as 50. “Wright reported that about 24 warriors were killed and since some of the houses had their doors shut and guns were being fired from crevices the buildings were fired and some of the inhabitants burned to death†documents within the 2004 Southwest Georgia Archaeological Survey explain. “Wright estimated the total killed to be between 40 and 50.†Wright was ultimately arrested for his crimes primarily due to the outrage of Jackson but the murdering captain in the end managed to escape disappearing into Spanish-occupied Florida according to accounts from The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. [Missouri]: [Civil War]: Benecke, Louis
Some Light Upon a Chariton County Episode of '64 wrapper title
N.p. but likely Brunswick Mo 1892. 13pp. Original printed wrappers sewn. Minor rubbing to title minor edge wear. Small ownership label on inside front wrapper. Very good. Louis Benecke's defense against accusations involving the murder of a Missouri Bushwhacker during the Civil War. On August 8 1864 William Carter a Union soldier visiting his mother at the family farm near Kaytesville Missouri "was taken prisoner by Bushwhcker Jim Jackson's gang stripped naked tied to a tree in the yard and shot at by the gang till his body was riddled with over thirty bullets and he was then left for dead still tied to the tree." The author of the present work Louis Benecke captain of Company I of the 49th Missouri Volunteers was rumored to have retaliated by killing "one of the participants in that murder." Here Benecke defends his good name against such slanders through contemporary orders affidavits and other material that refute the notion that he was involved. Benecke writes that "I was a mere boy when placed in responsible positions surrounded by intense partisan feeling hatred revenge and all that helped to bring about the unfortunate condition of things as they were in 1864-65." Most of the affidavits come from Missouri with one from Ohio and another from Texas.

"Reciting the events surrounding the death of William Carter of the 35th Regiment E. M. M. at the hands of Bushwhacker Jim Jackson's Gang and the killing of J. W. Leonard of the gang in retaliation; Benecke then in command at Brunswick Mo. now a politician finds himself under attack as one of those who had killed the bushwacker Leonard. In refutation he herein publishes a number of affidavits shedding much light on guerilla activities in Chariton County Missouri during the days of bushwackers" - Midland Notes 87:117.

Not in Dornbusch Nevins Nicholson or Eberstadt. Due to the lack of an imprint in the work results from OCLC are a bit muddled with over a dozen copies reported with publication dates between 1892 and 1895. unknown

[MOBERLY] [Brigadier-General F.J.]
Operations in Persia 1914-1919. Facsimile Edition with Introduction by Dr. G.M. Bayliss. [Official History of WW1]. NEAR FINE COPY IN UNCLIPPED DUSTWRAPPER
8vo., Second Edition, with 9 plates on 6, 8 folding maps coloured in outline and 6 large folding coloured maps in pocket at end; original series binding of red cloth, gilt back, a near fine copy in the dustwrapper, the latter lightly sunned at backstrip. Compiled at the request of the Government of India, this is one of the so-called 'mystery' volumes in the British official history of the First World War. Printed in an edition of just five hundred copies by HMSO in 1929, its very existence was classified because of political objections on the part of the Indian Office. This much-needed facsimile reissue gives a detailed account of the British military involvement in Persia between 1914 and 1919 and goes on to reveal the story behind the book's suppression.

[MURORAN - PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM OF US FORCES IN HOKKAIDO DURING THE KOREAN WAR].
米州兵輸送. Beishūhei yusō. Muroran Welcomes the Thunderbirds. 25 April 1951.
Japan. 1951. Eight black and white photographs 20.5 x 25.5cm each captioned in Japanese the handmade album is titled and dated in ink 23.5 x 32.8cm 9pp cord ties. One photograph has been removed card leaves and covers are browned surface of upper cover abraded in places some other minor wear but the photographs are in very good condition. A private album containing eight high-quality large-format photographs showing US forces being welcomed to the northern Japanese city of Muroran Hokkaido on 25 April 1951 - at the height of the Korean War. The first two photos show the US forces being welcomed by a local brass band. There is then a shot of US officers and Japanese officials standing under a large sign saying "Welcome Thunderbirds - Muroran City" indicating that the troops being welcomed are from the 45th Infantry Division nicknamed the Thunderbirds one of two US Army National Guard units engaged in the Korean War and recruited largely from the state of Oklahoma.

The 45th Infantry Division received their initial training for combat in Korea in the US itself in 1950 and then sailed from New Orleans to Japan in early 1951 arriving at the ports of Otaru and Muroran in Hokkaido April of that year. From there they were sent for further training at Camp Crawford a US military base on the outskirts of the city of Sapporo and at a newly created camp south of Chitose before being transfered to Korea in December 1951. The album also contains two photos of the ships "General C.G. Morton" and "General William Weigel" which were built during World War II and used as a troop transport ship during the Korean War and were presumably among the ships which brought the 45th Infantry Division to Japan. Other images show local officials explaining the geography of the region to US officers as they peruse a large map and a Japanese woman beign presented with a badge by an American officer.

Muroran was one of many Japanese ports whose life was transformed by the mass arrival of UN mostly American forces during the Korean War although the town's role in the war is less well documented than the roles of ports like Yokohama Kobe and Sasebo. These pictures give a vivid impression of the Korean war journeys of US troops and of Hokkaido during the Korean War. . unknown

[OTTOMAN MILITARY MAP of PATAGONIA and FALKLAND ISLANDS: ROUTE of DRESDEN] Alman kruvazörü Dresden'in takîbi ve tahrîbi.
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original color map. Elephant folio. (59x75 cm). In Ottoman script. [OTTOMAN MILITARY MAP of PATAGONIA and FALKLAND ISLANDS: ROUTE of DRESDEN] Alman kruvazörü Dresden'in takîbi ve tahrîbi. SMS Dresden cruiser's routes between 1913-1915 (World War 1) on the Patagonian shelf; western shores of South America, Patagonia and Falkland Islands. Dresden spent much of her career overseas. After commissioning, she visited the United States in 1909 during the Hudson-Fulton Celebration, before returning to Germany to serve in the reconnaissance force of the High Seas Fleet for three years. In 1913, she was assigned to the Mediterranean Division. She was then sent to the Caribbean to protect German nationals during the Mexican Revolution. In mid-1914, she carried the former dictator Victoriano Huerta to Jamaica, where the British had granted him asylum. She was due to return to Germany in July 1914, but was prevented by the outbreak of World War I from doing so. At the onset of hostilities, Dresden operated as a commerce raider in South American waters in the Atlantic, then moved to the Pacific Ocean in September and joined Maximilian von Spee's East Asia Squadron. Dresden saw action in the Battle of Coronel in November, where she engaged the British cruiser HMS Glasgow, and at the Battle of the Falkland Islands in December, where she was the only German warship to escape destruction. She eluded her British pursuers for several more months, until she put into Robinson Crusoe Island in March 1915. Her engines were worn out and she had almost no coal left for her boilers, so the ship's captain contacted the local Chilean authorities to have Dresden interned. She was trapped by British cruisers, including her old opponent Glasgow. The British violated Chilean neutrality and opened fire on the ship in the Battle of Más a Tierra. The Germans scuttled Dresden and the majority of the crew escaped to be interned in Chile for the duration of the war. The wreck remains in the harbor; several artifacts, including her bell and compass, have been returned to Germany.

The NCPW pushed for disarmament and neutrality during the interwar years and for peace after America's entrance into World War II. The present group contains several items from each period as well as some fascinating transitional material such as a mimeograph circular titled "What Peace Organization National and Local Can Do in Wartime" dated eleven days after the attack on Pearl Harbor. A good encapsulation of the council's work during this period. unknown

[Newspaper, Hospital] [Civil War]
The Hammond Gazette March 30 1864. Vol. 2 No. 20.

A nice example of a very uncommon newspaper printed weekly for the staff and patients of Hammond General or Point Lookout Hospital during 1863 and 1864. This Hospital for Union troops was constructed at the location of a summer resort on an isolated peninsula extending into Chesapeake Bay. After the Battle of Gettysburg during which a large number of Confederate troops were captured Point Lookout also quickly became the location of the largest Union prison camp.

The newspaper carries war news some general news and even a bit of poetry. The back page contains a list of the staff of the Hospital as well as the names States and units of the current patients. There were about 250 patients at the Hospital when this issue of the newspaper was printed.

The newspaper also contains several Army reports and notices including one noting the continued poor health of General Meade and the likelihood that "in consequence thereof General Grant will command the army in person." Also included is a clarifying proclamation regarding amnesty issued by President Lincoln.

Issues of this wartime hospital newspaper are very uncommon. As an indication of its rarity: the American Antiquarian Society which has the country's largest collection of newspapers only holds nine issues of the paper not including the issue offered here. [Newspapers]; [Wisconsin]; [US Civil War]; [Elections]; [Anti-Lincoln] U S
The Wisconsin Daily Patriot
Madison Wisconsin: The Wisconsin Daily Patriot / Daily Patriot Printing House 1864. Newspaper. Very Good. Bifolium. 55 cm. x 40 cm. Newspaper printed in black. Text divided into six columns. Price of 15 cents in the first column of text. With a few small illustrations. The Wisconsin Daily Patriot began printing in 1853 and was a daily newspaper dedicating to the promotion of the Democratic Party and the idea that the country could not prosper unless it was under the leadership of politicians from the Democratic Party. This issue contains a prospectus of the editorial board's opinion on the 1864 election and has a long essay that heavily criticizes Lincoln. The writer argues that Lincoln is not the person to put down the rebellion and that he used the issue of American slavery as a tool to divide the country and seek his own power. The writer also makes clear that he believes that inequality between white and Black people was "mandated by God". The paper also contains what was then recent news of the Confederate Army's attack of Fort Stevens and of General Franklin's capture by the Confederates. It gives several eye-witness accounts of battle action. Finally the newspaper also contains plenty of advertisements for local Madison businesses including clothiers exterminators surgeons printing houses druggists and other shops. The newspaper is a clear account of northern prejudice anti-Lincoln sentiment and shows a fervent Democrat's perspective on the U.S. Civil War. Two faint dampspots and two folds to the paper. The Wisconsin Daily Patriot / Daily Patriot Printing House unknown
