The grand epic memoir of Yekhiel Yeshaye Trunk (18871961) ; which he began as soon as arriving in New York in 1941, it took a decade to complete. Trunks broad political, social, and cultural experiences informed his autobiographical epic Poyln, a study of the decline of the upper strata of Polish Jewish society and the rise of a new secular Jewishness embodied in folklore, Yiddish literature, and the Bund. This work, his crowning achievement, focused almost entirely on the multifaceted collectivity of Polish Jewry, while relegating his personal story and inner struggle to the sideline. Trunk was the chief archivist of YIVO at the time of his death, and was considered, in an obituary published in the New York Times, one of the leading historians in the United States on the destruction of European Jewry during the Nazi era. ALS Politically Connected Young Man Parties with President Polk and Other Prominent Mexican American War Figures just after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
Charleston SC 1848. Very good tiny tears and light browning particularly around folds minor ink bleed through contents clean. 4 pp. Bifolium. 8 x 10.5 inches. A wonderful letter filled with descriptions and anecdotes of prominent military and political figures including Andrew Jackson. Dated Feb. 28th 1848 just as the Mexican American War was concluding the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo occurred less than four weeks before this letter was written and Polk's message to Congress concerning the Treaty a scant six days prior. Burns tells his cousin Anson of his visit to Washington D.C. to attend the celebrations hosted by Mr. & Mrs. Clifford Nathan Clifford was Attorney General. Burns was introduced to President Polk and presented the respects of his uncle Dr. Burns to which Polk replied "'Are you a relative of Dr. Burns I am glad to see you' and 'How is the doctor I have a great regard for him. I always know where to find him. We fought shoulder to shoulder through a stormy campaign. The Doctor was one of my finest friends - he never flinched. But how happens it that I did not see him at Concord last summer I expected to have met him'." <br /> <br /> Burns later attended a private ball at the home of Secretary of Treasury Robert J. Walker's where Burns admits he was "attaché to the Cabinet ladies". Here he met among other politicians and military figures General Sam Houston and Colonel May captor of La Vega who shared with Burns the comical circumstances that led to his appointment as Captain by Andrew Jackson. May tells Burns that "he had waiting long at Washington as an unsuccessful applicant for a commission until in a fit of desperation he mounted his horse & knowing himself one of the boldest riders in the County galloped to the White House rode up to the door & demanded to see the President. The servant asked him to walk in but he declines insisting that he must see his excellency at the Doors. At a summons so unusual the President hurried down and asked what he wanted. I wish you to see me ride said he. With that he vaulted into the saddle leaped over the iron picket enclosure backward & forward dome half dozen times and after curveting about the yard brought up in front of the palace rode up the steps & dismounted. Now says he General if you think me worthy of a Commission in the Cavalry & shall be most happy. I appoint you Captain on the spot said the old hero. Subsequent events show how well he deserved the station."<br /> <br /> Burns closes the letter with an excerpt of his farewell exchange with President Polk. "The morning before I left I called to bid goodbye to the Polks. He had just transmitted to the Senate his answer to their call for information relative to Mexican affairs. Says he "Mr. Burns What am I to do Here I am continually questioned not only as to fads but intentions motives & opinions. Now the information they want would be at this time highly injurious. Mexico knows too much already. Who is to be the judge" I told him I thought he certainly ought not to communicate information which he knew would prove injurious. "Certainly not" said he. He then referred to the publication of the correspondence of Mr. Reeves with his Government relative to French claims in which Mr. Reeves boasts what a good bargain he had made relative to French claims. The French Minister was present & the difficulty with France grew mainly out of this intention. To Mr. Johnson the new senator from Georgia he said "you have got just high enough. If you should happen to get into this place looking round the cabinet room you will not find yourself by any means in a quiet position. In fact Mr. Polk looked haggard and very much perplexed. But we shall soon have peace on that you may depend." unknown

[PRINTING: FIRST WORLD WAR] William Archibald Clowes (1866-1937), Chairman, William Clowes & Sons Ltd, English printers:
Clowes Printer; Royal Society of Arts 12 Typed Letters and one Autograph Letter re the printing of the 'Society of Arts Journal' addressed to Sir HT. Wood and G.K.Menzies Secretaries Royal Society of Arts together with one printed circular.
10 August 1915 to 23 November 1917. Clowes is an eminent firm of English printers founded in London in 1803 and still thriving in Suffolk. The twelve typed letters are each one page quarto on the firm's Duke Street letterhead. The autograph letter is one page 12mo with mourning border. The collection in good condition overall with a few items aged and lightly creased. Most items docketed and bearing the Society's stamp. All items except the circular signed by 'W A Clowes' who he informs Wood in his first letter has taken over from his cousin Captain W. C. Knight Clowes whose copy of the First Folio was subsequently bought by William Foyle. The collection provides an fascinating insight into the effect of the Great War on the printing trade with Clowes reluctantly announcing repeated increases in costs. In the third letter 21 October 1915 he states: 'We wish to wait and see what the effect of Lord Derby's recruiting scheme will be on the printing trade because if many more men are taken from it the cost of production will again be greatly increased . I am glad to say that for the moment we have a stock of the old Journal paper at the usual price'. Letter four 14 August 1918 warns of 'another large rise in wages in the London District in the near future' and letter five 27 March 1918 confirms 'the large increase in wages that the printing and binding trades have been compelled to grant their workpeople. All materials used in printing and binding have again risen and are still rising . we shall be obliged to raise our prices to you for printing and binding by a considerable percentage'. Letter six 20 March 1918 responds to a complaint from Menzies regarding the printing of the Journal's wrappers: 'I . cannot in any way defend the printing. I was having the matter thoroughly looked into before your letter came and the type renovated'. He complains that 'labour is so scarce' but promises that he will be 'keeping an eye on it until it is done properly'. Letter of 13 June 1917 announces '15% extra on composition machining and binding owing to the increases in wages which took place previously to October 1916 and the large increase that took place then and the still larger increase which had to be paid on this June 1st'. A printed circular announces another rise of 15% from 31 October 1917 'owing to the further increases in War Bonuses and the never ceasing increases in the cost of all materials'. On 28 March 1917 Clowes warns that the firm has 'only sufficient paper in stock to take us to about June 30th' and that 'prices will rise very sharply immediately owing to the great scarcity of materials'. In the handwritten letter which ends the series Clowes thanks Menzies for his 'kind letter of sympathy with us on the sad loss we have sustained by the death of my Cousin Mr Knight Clowes. I note with pleasure that you intend to insert a short obituary notice of him in your Journal. Columbus OH. Paperback. Very good. Broadsheet newspaper 4pp. "A Prison Gate May Be the Door to Opportunity." Small area of abraided loss at the lower right quadrant of the first page where it was once folded otherwise Very Good with mild soil and edgewear. Includes inmate articles and editorials including "What Will the Aftermath Really Be" foreshadowing U.S. official involvement in World War II an article about a visit fto the Penitentiary from Life Magazine which the author notes would not have happened under Hitler and a consideration of the Selective Service Program criteria barring convicts. Local interest includes a population report on deaths transfers releases and new inmates. The entire last page is dedicated to the fifth installment of "The Official '41 Softball Rules" with further rules promised the following week. The paper was edited by Henry J. Nitzsche who was serving a life sentence for murder at the time of publication. <br/><br/> paperback

Fair. A process-printed form 140 × 210 mm folded in half down the centre with 'Identification Cards for Ex-Prisoners of War' on the front panel and 'Indorsements' sic on the rear; Private Bailey's details are in pencil the prison place and date are stamped in red ink. The poor-quality paper is discoloured and creased where folded with several closed tears along or near the creases; a decent copy of a fragile and ephemeral item. unknown

[Prisoner of War]. DALTON, VX37705 Warrant Officer Class 2 Royce John
Six snapshots sent by Beryl Dalton his wife to VX37705 WO2 Royce John Dalton 2/24th Infantry Battalion in 1943 and 1944 while he was a prisoner of war in Italy and Germany
Six gelatin silver photographs five approximately 90 × 60 mm one 65 × 45 mm with the recipient's name prison address and a lengthy message from Mrs Beryl Dalton in ink on the verso of each one; in excellent condition with a 'Stalag VIIIA . Geprüft checked' inkstamp on each verso. Four photographs were sent to Italy and two to Germany. Judging by the dates on the messages between 23 January 1943 and 25 May 1944 and the addresses of the prisons only one snapshot was sent at a time possibly no more were permitted. In Italy 'Australians who were not officers were held in Campo 57 at Gruppignano near Udine in north-east Italy. The camp was commanded by Colonel Vittorio Calcaterra described by one prisoner as "a sadist and a beast and an accessory to murder"' Australian War Memorial. This is where WO2 Dalton was held. After Italy surrendered in September 1943 he was taken to Stalag VIIIA in Görlitz Germany. His capture probably occurred during the Second Battle of El Alamein in October 1942. Each snapshot features Royce John Dalton's young son John Royce Dalton who appears to have been born after his father left for the Middle East in November 1940. One poignant message reads 'Dear Royce This is our son John Royce isn't he grand .'. Others contain similar sentiments such as 'This is our son taken on his big engine on 20.12.43 which we gave him for Xmas'; and 'Mother & Pop idolize John but I don't let them spoil him. John's a happy child .'. 6 items. unknown

Cookham: The Authors 1946. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Cookham The Authors 1946. Oblong quarto 107 pages with numerous illustrations. Grey cloth lettered in red on the front cover; cloth a little unevenly sunned and lightly foxed; foot of the spine lightly bumped throughout; a very good copy. The two-page introduction by the authors dated 'Cookham 1946' outlines the chequered history of the book not least the difficulties in getting it printed on their return from captivity. We 'spent two months searching a somewhat changed England for a publisher with enough good paper for the Book. Having discovered one we found that the printing trade was so short of man-power particularly block-makers and book-binders that our book had to take its turn in a long queue and that our original estimate of the time required to produce it was far too optimistic. We therefore apologise for the long delay and hope that you will receive your copy with as much pleasure as we see the last of it. We should like to take this opportunity of apologising to the many subscribers who sent messages of goodwill for not replying to them'. <p>An online search brought up further interesting information: all other copies we found for sale were bound in blue cloth with red lettering; one of them was still in its original packaging from the printer P.J. Press 34 Fort Road Middlesex; and a facsimile edition was published in 2005 variously signed by one or more former prisoners of war. The Authors hardcover
