[RUSSO-JAPANESE WAR MAP].
"Daily Mail" Map of the War in China.
London.: George Philip & Son. 1904-1905. Colour folding map centred on the Bohai Sea about the ongoing Russo-Japanese War. Divided into 18 panels measuring 56 x 71cm when open folds into card covers with "A Map of the Country between Pekin and Taku" printed in red inside the upper cover covers measure 20.5 x 14cm. Map little foxed though not affecting image few small holes at folds covers worn and chipped particularly at extremities spine pf cover strengthened with archival tape overall in good condition. A detailed map of China's northeast extending from Nanjing and Shanghai in the south to Changchun in the north showing the European concessions of Port Arthur Weihaiwei and Qingdao. The Korean peninsula is also shown. Placenames are marked as well as road and rail links. Curiously although the South Manchuria Railway between Harbin and Port Arthur had been fully completed by the time of the war's outbreak and publication of this map the line north of Kaiyuan appears to be marked as incomplete perhaps indicating an asymmetric spread of knowledge regarding the railway's progress among British cartographers.

Also shown are inset maps of central Beijing the area around Guangzhou as well as the Southeast of England to the same scale for comparison. A line map of the area between Beijing and Tianjin is included on the reverse of the upper cover. . George Philip & Son. unknown

Illustrated throughout with a vast number indeed many hundreds of chromo-lithographs coloured maps charts finely coloured plates full-page photographs colotypes and textual illustrations mostly full-page and some double-page with extraordinarily fine colour printing throughout including highlighting in silver and gold. Thick Royal 8vo publisher's bindings of three quarter morocco over cloth covered boards the spine fully decorated with gilt roll tooling dividing the compartments lettering in gilt central ornamental devices gilt. vi 424; ii 425-848; ii 849-1418 pp. A very good set indeed the bindings strong the text in pleasing condition with only occasional notes of wear the many coloured plates very well preserved some tissue guards with old evidence of damp not affecting the plates or text and probably from damp prior to binding a pleasing set in well preserved condition. FIRST EDITION BOUND FROM THE ORIGINAL PARTS REPLETE WITH ILLUSTRATIONS AND MANY VERY FINELY COLOURED AND HIGHLIGHTED IN SILVER AND GOLD. The Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05 which began with the Japanese naval attack on Port Arthur had repercussions throughout the world. Germany had helped to nudge both powers towards the war and had also managed to alienate both belligerents. She had used tremendous diplomatic pressure against the Japanese to force them to relinquish Port Arthur to the Chinese who then leased it to the Russians. Simultaneously the newly emerged nation of Japan was training its army officers in Germany. German involvement in the conflict led to war scares with both France and Great Britain causing Germany to quickly arrange an unwanted international conference at which they found themselves distrusted and isolated.
The war ended with the Treaty of Portsmouth arranged by U.S. President Teddy Roosevelt. The Russo-Japanese War won for the U.S. a place at the table of superpowers and a new respect in world diplomacy but for Germany it earned nothing but suspicion. In August 1905 the future chief of the general staff Helmuth von Moltke noted in his diary that "all the other nations are pretty well united in reviling Germany. They all assert that we are disturbing the peace."' Even Baron Friedrich von Holstein the chief architect of foreign policy from 1890 to 1906 admitted the bankruptcy of German diplomacy. "In short" he wrote to a friend "in the present atmosphere it seems to me that the correct and dignified thing to do would be to act like Russia after the Crimean War and calmly to withdraw into ourselves." Kinkodo-Shoseki-Kabushiki-Kaisha (Kinkodo Publishing Co.) and Maruzen-Kabushiki-Kaisha (Z.P. Maruya & Co.) hardcover

[RUSSO-JAPANESE WAR -- HIBIYA RIOTS]. [YANO FUMIO (Ed) & KUNIKIDA DOPPO].
Tokyo Senji Gaho. The Japanese Graphic No. 66. . . .
Tokyo: Kinji Gaho Company Recent Events Graphic Co. Sept. 18th 1905. Folio. 36 pp. Numerous photo illustrations illustrated plates woodcut-block text illustrations. Colour-illustrated softcovers vivid cover art of rioters and burning fires across Tokyo minor chipping & wear to spine rusting to staples at gutter margin minor edgewear still a VG copy. First edition of this special issue of the Senji Gaho Wartime Graphic magazine a lavish and popular Japanese illustrated magazine which captured the violent protests against the peace treaty terms for the Russo-Japanese War. The Japanese populace had been fed a steady diet of propagandistic victories celebrating Japan’s newfound military prowess and had expected Russia to pay a large indemnity to recover the tremendous costs imposing rationing and taxes on all manner of goods in Japan at the cost of over 80000 casualties. However due to rising wartime costs Japanese negotiators settled for a free hand in dominating Korea as a protectorate and leasehold in Southern Manchuria. Anti-peace riots broke out after a large rally in Hibiya Park Sept. 5 1905 and quickly spread for three days with 17 killed 311 arrested and 70 percent of Tokyo’s police boxes substations destroyed along with 15 streetcars. [Russo-Japanese War – Imperial Japan] Uyeda, Kyoske
Two Postcards from a Soldier in Imperial Japan near the End of the Russo-Japanese War
Tokyo Japan 1905. Two postcards measuring 3 ½ x 5 ½ inches. Near Fine. Two postcards from Kyoske Uyeda in Japan to his friend Bessie Mulkey in San Francisco dated May and July 1905. At the time the Russo-Japanese War fought over the Russian and Japanese Empires’ imperial ambitions for Manchuria and Korea was nearing its end. Uyeda had been on the front; in his earlier postcard he writes:

“May 5th 1905 I left the front at the end of March after the great victory around Mukden and have been back to Tokyo for sometime. I congratulate myself that I was fortunate enough to come back to the country at this glorious season of all sorts of beautiful flowers. The people too are enjoying the seasons as if there is no such terrible thing as war. They are having picnics every day. I will leave the country for the front within a short time. Kyo.â€

Mukden—present-day Shenyang Liaoning province—was the site of the war’s final land battle fought from February to March 1905 and resulting in a decisive victory for Imperial Japan. In his second postcard Uyeda is set to depart for another significant location in the war:

“I will leave here for Port Arthur to-morrow and having stayed there a day or two and coming back here am probably to go to our Headquarters at Mukhden to attend to the annual celebration of the day in which our Manchurian Expedition Army organised that is on the 6th of July 04. I expect a grand time there Marshal Oyama Gen. Baron Kodama Gen. Kuroki and many other grand chieftains will assemble at the Capital of Manchuria.â€

Port Arthur now Lüshunkou District in Liaoning province China was seized by the Japanese in 1894 during the First Sino-Japanese War; returned to China in 1895; and then leased in an unequal treaty by the Russian Empire in 1898. Japan’s surprise attack against the Russian fleet at Port Arthur launched the war in February 1904 and resulted in Japan retaking the port.

Uyeda’s notes are written on interesting themed postcards depicting the Imperial Japanese Navy; one reads “Our Combined Squadron steaming towards the enemy†and the other “Our torpedoboat squadron returning to a naval base after fighting with the enemy.†How Uyeda and Mulkey would have met and begun a correspondence is unclear. unknown

[RUSSO-JAPANESE WAR - SATIRE] KEPPLER, JOSEPH (ARTIST).
When
New York. May 171905. Colour lithograph on a single newspaper leaf 23 x 20.5 cms image; 32.5 x 22.8 cms sheet issued as the front page of "Puck" magazine May 171905 related text on the verso; short repaired marginal tears not affecting the image lower left corner with faint creases in very good condition. A caricature from the American satirical journal "Puck" depicting the fear that struck European powers following the Japanese victory in the Russo-Japanese war of 1904-1905. The head of an armed Japanese soldier emerges as a rising sun over the horizon as a group of European leaders huddles below. Uncle Sam is nowhere to be seen. The tone of the related text on the verso strikes rather a different note:

"France has deliberately permitted the enemies of Japan to use her territory as if it were their own and has thus invited trouble of far-reaching possibilities and of a kind highly inimical to the general peace of the world. All of which should make Uncle Sam wary in his dealings with these foreign powers that regard international agreements and ententes cordiales with contempt."

The "When" of the caricature equally queried an end to American isolationism as well as the European fear of the rise of Japan. . unknown
