Ludlow Vermont 1866. Ledger. Good. Ledger. Octavo. 234 pages total of which 174 pages have writing from a few word numbers etc. to completely filled accounts. Approximately 60 pages are blank. Brownish marbled paper covered boards with tan leather spine. Marbled paper is shelf worn. Spine is chipped at head and base. Arithmetic pencil notes written on the end sheets. A few pages torn out of the ledger in back. Interior content in good condition. About half the pages or less are used for accounts. First page starts with the written heading - "Cash paid out for Company 1863 by S. W. Stinson." Items listed on the first two pages include Horse accessories wagons wagon parts shoes stables oats hay and other horse and wagon related items. Several pages following the 1863 and 1864 records are equations written in pencil. One of these pages has the heading - "Bark Measured for S P Atherton". From the middle sections of the ledger to the end are several products associated with clothing accessories. One page is dated 1865/66. Goods and costs of items include a sewing machine buttons embroidery "infants waist" braid fringe ribbon lace cuffs collars trimmings feather bonnets hats silk etc. Towards the back of the ledger is a short inscription signed by S Stinson Ludlow Vermont. "Le général Salan (1899-1984) est l'un des chefs militaires les plus connus du grand public, mais aussi l'un des plus controversés en raison de sa participation au putsch des généraux à Alger en 1961, puis comme responsable de l'Organisation de l'armée secrète (OAS). Cependant, sa vie ne peut se résumer à ces événements. Après Saint-Cyr, il choisit l'infanterie coloniale et combat près de Verdun en 1918.11 sert ensuite en Syrie où il est gravement blessé, et enfin longuement en Indochine. Après avoir organisé des sabotages en Ethiopie italienne juste avant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il mène un bataillon de Sénégalais au combat en juin 1940, puis sert dans l'armée d'armistice avant de participer aux combats de la Libération. Promu général à 45 ans seulement, il effectue trois séjours en Indochine, occupant des postes de plus en plus élevés jusqu'à celui de commandant en chef. A partir de 1956, il commande l'armée en Algérie, qu'il quitte fin 1958 pour devenir gouverneur militaire de Paris. Illustré par près de 250 photos et documents, pour la plupart inédits, ce livre permet de comprendre qui était réellement Raoul Salan, le chef militaire, mais aussi l'homme, avec ses qualités et ses défauts, ses forces et ses faiblesses."

<p>Govt. Print. Office May 15 1861. 8½ x 11 inches. Vignette of the American eagle. Paper losses primarily confined to margins although at places affecting one printed word and one handwritten word; usual folds; fair condition.</p> <p>The 1862-dated discharge paper for Edwin A. Collins b.1819 a forty-three year-old shoemaker-turned-musician and native of Salem County New Jersey. Collins was one of eleven musicians all privates who comprised the band for the 5th New Jersey Volunteers. The band was directed by Harry G. Frankenfield. Frankenfield had founded the Salem New Jersey Cornet Band 1860 and by October of 1861 he had raised the Regiment’s band in Trenton. The musical ensemble mustered out in August of 1862. John Hayward </p> <p>Collins’s discharge is autographed by Samuel Henry “Old Paddy†Starr seen here as a Colonel of the 5th Regiment. Starr was a vulgar and highly-volatile old-guard dragoon. A strict disciplinarian he was known among his subordinates as “Old Nose Bag.†If a soldier transgressed Starr had the offender tied and straddled to a fence with his face strapped into a horse’s nose bag. Faded Hoofbeats – Samuel H. “Old Paddy†Starr 6th US Cavalry online</p> <p>Collins was mustered out at Harrison Landing Virginia “Given at Camp near Alexandria†Virginia by Lieutenant S. Lee Perkins and autographed by Perkins and he is described as having light complexion black eyes and black hair. On the verso of Collins’s discharge it is recorded that received $40.66 in pay on October 31 1862.</p> <p>Details of Collins’s civilian life before and after the War have eluded us. We do not find him recorded in state or federal census records.</p> unknown

Written by the subjects' brother. Memorial of Walter H. Schulze born and raised in Kenilworth Illinois attended West Point class of 1917. Originally assigned to the cavalry Schulze managed to transfer to aviation and after training was attached to the 185th Squadron flying Sopwith Camels. After the armistice Schulze transferred to the 41st Aero Squadron and later to the 138th Squadron. On June 28 1919 Schulze was killed in a crash while delivering news of the signing of the peace treaty ending the war. Owner's bookplate on front paste-down tape residue on ffep. No marks in book. Leather backstrip shows considerable wear with 2" tear at joints at top and lacking 3/4" at bottom title handwritten on spine. Book condition Good. Privately Printed Limited Edition hardcover

Jacob Venckel Modern marbled boards. 2 69 pp. Rare pamphlet written by an anonymous author discussing the fascinating Battle of Vågen the main port area of neutral Bergen in Norway in August 1665 during the Second Anglo-Dutch War 1665-1667 including its background and aftermath. The Second Anglo-Dutch war was a war at sea caused by conflicts in colonial territories of the Dutch Republic and England. This naval war consisted mainly of protecting their own merchant ships capturing enemy ships and trying to sink mutual warships. The Battle of Vågen was an important naval battle between a rich treasure fleet of the Dutch East India Company VOC and an English flotilla of warships. Twice a year the Dutch VOC sent a treasure fleet from the East Indies to the Dutch Republic with money and goods. On 24 December 1664 one of the richest-laden fleets in Dutch history departed from Batavia for the homeland with a cargo estimated to be worth millions. This fleet was intended to support the Dutch Republic financially and therefore should not fall into enemy hands. Since the tensions with England were already high in 1664 an experienced officer the rear admiral Pieter de Bitter ca. 1620-1666 was appointed to command this fleet.The present pamphlet gives an account of the events before and after the Battle of Vågen and also in broad lines of the battle itself including all kinds of correspondence and notes from high-ranking figures. The dating in the title is incorrect as the story took place from August 1 to August 20 which is why the title has been corrected by hand in the present copy. The present edition is one of two both printed in 1665 but with a different imprint the present one with the publisher and place of publication and the other with only the year and the alignment of the text. However they were both likely printed by the same printer. The present edition is very rare. We've not been able to find other copies in sales records and only a few in institutions. A highly interesting pamphlet on one of the most important and fascinating 17th-century sea battles in Dutch naval history and in the history of the Dutch VOC.The date "13. Juny" has been crossed out on the title page and replaced by "1. Augusti" in manuscript. The work is slightly browned throughout a small hole in the lower margin of the title-page and an ink drop in the lower margin of page 65. Original photographs. 1946. Sixty-six gelatin silver print photographs relating to refugees residing in Lübeck in 1946 following the Second World War. The largest measuring 17 x 13cm with some smaller. All uncaptioned but with a contemporary envelope bearing a British military government stamp dated 18th July 1946 and reference "512 P DET" and additional manuscript tag "508 DET LÜBECK". Condition is very good indeed. An unusual group of photographs apparently originating from the British administration in Germany during the immediate post-war period depicting the experiences of refugees from the former eastern territories of Germany annexed by Poland and the Soviet Union following the end of the war displaced and now residing in Lübeck. The result of Germany's eastern border being redrawn was a mass influx of displaced persons predominantly into Schleswig-Holstein causing an economic and humanitarian crisis which formed one of the biggest difficulties faced by Germany during the early post-war period and which was brought to an end only by the Wirtschaftswunder economic miracle of the 1950s. </p><p>The present photographs form an important insight into the plight of those displaced predominantly depicting poignant moments of arrival and departure. Spitfire and Bomber Squadron. Cut out model builder.
Australia: Ace Industries 1941. Six sheets of stamp-cut perforated card being many individual push out shapes printed in colour on both sides to form planes troops and so forth. Each sheet measures 255 x 420 mm. and all are housed within the original printed covers. Excellent condition with all parts intact. An attractive relic of an Australian aviation amusement for children printed during the Second World War. As the printed rear cover explains 'all items are perforated and punched and taking one sheet at a time the various illustrations should be pressed out by releasing the holding pieces and cut-out lines. First assemble the airmen parachutists mechanics soldiers stretcher bearers bren gun anti-aircraft gun and machine guns using the stands made of heavy board.' The final result is an airfield in cardboard and 'when the set is completely assembled many interesting hours will be spent in manoeuvring the various planes lorries soldiers airmen etc. into action positions'.</p> <p>The present example is remarkable for being uncirculated with all pieces exactly as the game was issued. It is an example of the extent to which the War entered mundane aspects of everyday life. The game is included in Marcie Muir's Australian Children's Books 7023. La mise à jour pour la période postérieure à la Guerre n’est assurée que par un fascicule joint à la fin de l’ouvrage. Il est par conséquent tout à fait intéressant dans la mesure où il montre l’évolution du droit pénal pendant les années 30 et au début des années 40 dans cette matière très spécifique qui contient notamment l’ensemble des crimes et délits contre la sûreté de l’État, contre la Constitution et la paix publique, contre les personnes, contre les destructions et prédations. Il permet de constater que le durcissement du droit pénal n’est pas l’apanage du régime de l’État français mais a déjà largement commencé à la fin de la IIIème République.
