‎[South African (Boer) War Memorial]. JONES, Captain Adrian‎

‎Memoirs of a Soldier Artist‎

‎London: Stanley Paul & Co. Ltd 1933. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. London Stanley Paul & Co. Ltd. 1933. Octavo 256 pages plus 28 pages of plates totalling 40 illustrations from photographs. Gilt-lettered black cloth a little rubbed sunned and marked; front cover slightly bowed; extremities a little bumped; edges a little foxed and marked; flyleaves lightly discoloured; a very good copy. The autobiography of British soldier artist and sculptor Adrian Jones 1845-1938. Pages 111-114 and the plate facing page 96 refer to his Boer War Memorial sculpture at the entrance to Government House at the corner of North Terrace and King William Street Adelaide. Jones tells the story from the initial request by 'an influential Committee representing the City of Adelaide' chaired by Sir Kiffin Thomas to the unveiling in 1904 and Sir William Sowden's letter of appreciation some 21 years later. The Memorial 'was designed along the vigorous lines that appeal so strongly to the Australian people. Indeed many Australians told me that they thought it the best statue in the country but this may have been said to please me' page 112. His 'magnum opus however was his "Peace Quadriga" 1912 for Constitution Arch Hyde Park Corner his hopes for a major unveiling ceremony and perhaps even a knighthood dashed by the death of his great advocate King Edward VII in 1910'. ‎[South Carolina] [Civil War] Sears, Jos H‎

‎The New South. Vol. 2. No. 32. Port Royal S.C. Saturday April 16 1864. Whole No. 84‎

‎Port Royal S.C.: Jos. H. Sears 1864. First edition. Self wrappers. About very good copy loss of a few words at a small hole caused by an abrasion wax seal owners name and small tear on top margin. 4 pp. Folio. 13 x 9 1/2 inches. Articles on the New Banking System; Fort Pulaski; Lists of Prisoners; Affairs in Florida; Excitement about Torpedoes; advertisements.

As Chronicling America Library of Congress & University of South Carolina note:
"The Port Royal New South 1862-67 holds the distinction of being one of the first occupation newspapers published in the Confederacy during the Civil War. Unlike many of its successors however the New South not only outlasted the war but served as a witness to the political and social changes transforming Beaufort County South Carolina in its aftermath.

Union Army postmaster Joseph Henry Sears launched the New South on March 15 1862. Recognizing the historical importance of his endeavor he remarked "Not often has a newspaper occupied so singular a position as that filled to-day . Issued in a military command addressed mostly to soldiers at the seat of war its audience is yet not purely military." Within two weeks' time Sears was forced to suspend publication as a concession to the supply needs of Union Army troops under the command of General David Hunter. The New South returned on August 23 1862 and it remained a reliable news source for the duration of the war. Newspapers as far-flung as the Daily Evansville Indiana Journal Daily Green Mountain Freeman Montpelier Vermont and Brownville Nebraska Advertiser picked up and carried its reports on the whereabouts of military companies and ships. By September 1863 circulation rates for the New South approached 10000 copies.

Several of the men who worked for the New South went on to distinguished careers. In addition to serving as editor Union Army General Adam Badeau also served on General William T. Sherman's staff. He later published a number of historical works including Military History of Ulysses S. Grant 1881 and Grant in Peace 1887. Badeau's successor Henry Jacob Winser went on to serve as United States Consul General at the Court of the Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha 1869-81 chief of the information bureau of the Northern Pacific Railway Company assistant editor for the New-York Commercial Advertiser and managing editor for the Newark New Jersey Daily Advertiser.

The details on the final days of the New South are scarce and contradictory due to gaps in the newspaper record. The newspaper apparently changed hands sometime in 1865 the same year it was moved from Port Royal to Beaufort. As late as August 1866 the Charleston South Carolina Daily News named Joseph Sears as an agent for the New South but the few surviving issues from that period only identify Lewis Thompson the former publisher for the Anti-Slavery Society of Philadelphia as proprietor. Contemporary scholarly sources have since surmised that the New South ceased in 1866 but an account of a destructive fire in Beaufort appearing in the Columbia South Carolina Daily Phoenix on March 9 1867 indicates the New South was still a viable concern. The latest issue known to exist is dated September 29 1866." Jos. H. Sears unknown‎

‎[Spanish American War] [Alanta] [W A Hemphill, President; T H Martin, Secretary]‎

‎Atlanta Peace Jubilee. Celebrating the Success of American Arms in the Spanish-American War. Official Programme‎

‎Atlanta: Atlanta Peace Jubilee 1898. First Edition. Broadside. Very good. Broadside. Approx. 8" x 6". Vertical fold to the paper. This broadside provides the schedule for Wednesday December 14th and Thursday December 15th. President William McKinley and his party attended this celebration having lunch before attending a public reception at the State Capitol on Wednesday. Later that day there was a floral parade and an evening reception at the Capital City Club. Thursday they had breakfast at the Kimball House followed by a Grand Parade and a Grand Banquet at 7:00 p.m. At 8:00 p.m. a theater party at the Grand tendered by the ladies of Jubilee Committee to Mrs. McKinley and the ladies of the Presidential Party: Sol Smith Russell being the attraction. Either the President kept late hours or the programme was inaccurate: following the theater performance the next agenda item was 11 p.m. lunch at Capitol City Club with the President and his party departing at 1:00 a.m. From Franklin Garrett's history "Atlanta Environs" vol. II pages 357-359 summarizes the celebration. Garrett states "An outstanding event in the local annals for 1898 was the Atlanta Peace Jubilee held on December 14th and December 15th celebrating the success of American arms in the late war." General Wheeler was one of the President's party. Atlanta Peace Jubilee unknown‎

Folio 15x11" 84pp. Presented to Kenneth McKlintock former Secretary of State and President of the Senate of Puerto Rico by the Colección Alvaraz Martinez Cadilla with inscription and signature on title page. Illustrations facsimiles. Original printed paper wraps spine chipped split and partially perished. Colección Alvaraz Martinez Cadilla stamps throughout else clean internally. A good copy.

Very uncommon memoir from the innovative 20th century Puerto Rican artist Julio Tomás Martínez 1878-1954. Martinez studied art architecture and engineering working in all three fields in Arecibo. Martinez set himself apart from most Puerto Rican artists of the time with his interest modern idioms incorporating symbolism surrealism and futurism into his works. He was married to writer and artist Maria Cadilla and the two established an art academy in Santurce San Juan.

This book includes sections on the Spanish American War and represents one of the few published memoirs of a Puerto Rican civilian on that topic. Martinez describes the role his hometown of Utuado played in the 1898 conflict and describes the American military campaign against Spanish forces on the island.

This book has a significant association being presented to then Senator and later President of the Senate and Secretary of State of Puerto Rico Kenneth McKlintock b. 1957. We can't identify the signature but it is likely a child or grandchild of Martinez and Cadilla one of their daughters having married into the Alvarez family.

OCLC cites just 6 holdings of this important text from an influential figure in early 20th century Puerto Rican history and culture.

. ‎[SPANISH CIVIL WAR] COMINTERN‎

‎International Press Correspondence aka INPRECOR; aka World News and Views. Collection of 249 Issues 1934-1939‎

‎London: H.R.G. Jefferson et al 1934-1939. NOTE: Other identified publishers all London include: Unthanks Bookshop; R. Bishop; William Massey. Beginning in July 1938 title changes to "World News and Views."

Collection of two hundred forty-nine quarto issues in original staple-bound self-wrappers. Each issue 27cm x 21cm; most issues ca 20pp numbered sequentially. General wear occasional creasing or small losses; some copies marked as "File Copies;" some with red pencil annotations presumably for publication; a few issues with ink pressure stamp of the Los Angeles Workers Library. With the exception of a few issues in 1934 the journal was printed on high-quality newsprint; the run is well-preserved Very Good overall and fully readable.

The periodical was issued irregularly from one to as many as three issues per week; our run collates as follows:

Vol. 14 1934: 28-14161719-232629-3234-3638-4043-455760-63 32 issues
Vol. 15 1935: 1-58-3136383944474850555658596163646668-72 49 issues
Vol. 16 1936: 1246-3032-384042-58 53 issues
Vol. 17 1937: 248-242642444547-5355-57 47 issues
Vol. 18 1938: 1-35-81012-2325273031333436-4044-47525456-60 38 issues
Vol. 19 1939: 2-91415181920-2628-3235-4155 30 issues. Beginning in 1918 immediately following the Russian Revolution International Press Correspondence usually called by its acronym INPRECOR became the Communist International's principal international organ for distributing "official" news of the global spread of Marxist ideology. The paper was issued in four languages English French Spanish and German and at its height no fewer than one and as many as three issues per week appeared. The chief audience was the editorial staffs of COMINTERN-aligned newspapers where many of INPRECOR's articles would be republished verbatim. Thus INPRECOR served as a de facto press service for the left-wing media in Europe North and Latin America.

In our experience cohesive runs of INPRECOR in any size are unusual; this collection represents a veritable treasure-trove of official COMINTERN policy during the Popular Front period especially valuable for its day-by-day coverage and interpretation of events in Spain before during and after the Civil War and for documenting the rise of fascism across the European continent. Our run ends in August 1939 on the eve of Germany's invasion of Poland and the outbreak of the Second World War. Between that date and 1934 despite occasional lacunae the issues offered here provide a clear and compelling narrative of the sweep of world events leading to the World War and an intimate view of the communist left's response to those events.

Even individual issues are somewhat scarce in commerce. Earlier issues of INPRECOR have been digitized by the Marxist Internet Archive ending in 1934. Much of the run is available in microfiche produced by the Communist Party of Great Britain but the imaging is of legendarily poor quality basically illegible in many places. Holdings for physical issues are spotty per WorldCat with many institutions holding small samples or partial runs. H.R.G. Jefferson [et al] unknown‎

‎[Spanish-American War]. [McCook Family]‎

‎Archive Containing Original Photographs Letters and Documents Pertaining to the Military and Post-Military Careers of Major General Alexander McDowell McCook and His Son-in-Law Brigadier General Chauncey Brooke Baker‎

‎Various locations in Cuba 1902. Very good. Seventeen loose folio scrapbook leaves each with mounted correspondence or other documents; one vernacular photograph album; two scrapbooks; and a small number of loose documents and newspaper clippings as detailed below. An informative archive comprised of material from two generations of the McCook family of Ohio specifically two different military officers -- Major General Alexander McDowell McCook and his son-in-law Brigadier General Chauncey Brooke Baker 1860-1936. Baker was married to McCook's eldest daughter Lucianna "Lucy" McCook Baker who seems to have compiled the various components of the present archive which mostly documents the career of her husband Chauncey Baker. The collection includes seventeen loose folio scrapbook leaves each with mounted correspondence or other documents one photograph album two scrapbooks and a small number of loose documents and newspaper clippings.

Union Army General Alexander McDowell McCook one of the "Fighting McCooks" continued his army career after the war in the regular Army. He commanded Fort Leavenworth Kansas from 1886-1890 the Department of Arizona from 1890-1893 and the Department of Colorado from 1893-1895. He was joined in each location by his daughter and son-in-law. Chauncey Brooke Baker married Lucy McCook while at Leavenworth and later served as McCook's aide-de-camp and acting engineering officer at Los Angeles and Denver Headquarters Department of Arizona and Colorado. Later promotions and the start of the Spanish-American War led Baker to Cuba in a quartermaster role. It seems his wife accompanied him there and began acquiring the images now housed in the photograph album offered here. Lucy Baker died in 1923 placing the scrapbooks completion date before that time. The material is detailed as follows:

1 Seventeen loose scrapbook leaves containing twenty-five pieces of correspondence typed documents and printed documents primarily associated with the later business dealings of Alexander M. McCook while he was stationed in Utah Colorado Kansas. This material dates mostly between 1882 and 1898. Letters are from a variety of correspondents and reflect McCook's post-war military career at frontier installations his involvement in the railroads investments and other personal matters. One of the more informative documents details the history of McCook's military service from his entry to West Point in 1847 through his appointment to the Department of Arizona in 1894. The collection also includes a handful of loose documents and letters as well as an envelope of newspaper clippings documenting McCook's later affairs. One notable item is a four-page offprint of a memorial of McCook written by Col. Horace N. Fisher and first published in the Boston Transcript on Sunday June 13 1903. General McCook had just passed away the previous day at Lucy's house in Dayton Ohio.

2 Vernacular Photograph Album Documenting Cuba Under Spanish Occupation and the United States Military Government's Occupation. Various locations in Cuba: ca. 1898-1902. 24 leaves illustrated with 303 silver gelatin photographs from 3.25 x 2.25 to 7.5 x 9 inches. Quarto. Contemporary three-quarter calf and black cloth boards. Spine perished most leaves separated from spine but held to each other by cloth gutter in a few groupings. Leaves worn silvering to some images. Inscribed on front free endpaper "Lucy McCook. Fort Leavenworth Kansas Nov 21st 1888." Lucy likely dated the album in 1888 then never used it as all of the images in the album emanate from Cuba. The photographs depict a mixture of rural and urban scenes featuring native Cubans as well as Americans Cuban and American military personnel landmarks military installations ships recreation building interiors with some images depicting the remnants of war. Notable are three large format photographs at the end of the album: a photograph of armed soldiers and a religious figure exiting a fortress-like structure with handwritten caption below "On the way to the Garote Castillo del Principe - during the Spanish occupation;" a photograph showing a large group of men assembled at tables and chairs in a gallery-style room with a handwritten caption reading "Opening of the Cuban Constitutional Convention - Havana - Nov. 5th 1900 General Leonard Wood Military Governor reading address in full uniform Temporary President on his left;" and a photograph of Havana's large cathedral with a crowd gathered captioned "Governor General Weyler entering Cathedral Havana Spanish Occupation." Captions were likely added by Lucy McCook whose husband was serving at the time as quartermaster chief quartermaster and depot quartermaster in the U.S. Army's Division and Department of Cuba. This album is the most historically-important and useful item in the present archive.

3 Scrapbook of Newspaper Clippings and an Original Drawing of an American Military Officer in Indian Territory. N.p.: early 1900s. 11 leaves illustrated with newspaper clippings and one drawing. Quarto. Contemporary brown cloth elaborately tooled in black title in gilt on front cover and spine. Moderate wear rubbing and dust-soiling. Inscribed on front free endpaper "Lucy McCook Baker / Los Angeles - California / April 1892." An interesting collection of mostly newspaper clippings associated with Native American rituals related to the Moqui Indians the Army and articles on General McCook or Lieutenant Chauncey Baker. The album also includes an original pen drawing titled in manuscript "Tent of The Macauley in Camp at Guthrie I.T. 20th June 1889." The drawing features a military figure standing in a road holding a small shovel in the air in front of a sign pointing one way to Oklahoma and the other way to Ft. Leavenworth. The drawing is signed at bottom "Glück."

4 Scrapbook of Ephemeral Items Relating to the Military Careers of Alexander McDowell McCook and Chauncey Baker Plus Later Items Related to Another Member of the McCook Family. N.p.: early 1900s. 9 leaves illustrated with telegrams pamphlets invitations and other ephemeral items. Quarto. Contemporary aqua cloth with gilt titles on front cover string tied. The items primarily concern McCook's and Baker's military service including an "In Memoriam" for Alexander McDowell McCook as well as some items relating to the later military career of Alexander McCook Craigshead.

A diverse collection of materials relating to the careers of two notable military men serving in the American West and in Cuba during the Spanish-American War with a wonderful vernacular photograph album documenting the latter and the whole likely retained and organized by the daughter and wife respectively of the men involved. unknown‎

‎Broken Run of Twenty-Two Issues of "The Nation‎

‎New York: The Nation 1898. Very Good -. New York: The Nation 1898. Twenty-two volumes; quartos 30.5cm.; uniformly stitched self-wrappers. Collection comprises the following issues: Nos. 1714 May 5 1898 1716-19 1721 1724 1730-2 1734 1736-7 1746-7 1751-2 1754 1762-3 1766 & 1770 June 1 1899. Condition ranges from Near Fine to Good only with a few of issues starting to split at spine two issues with upper covers separated but present and the earliest issue with rather large loss along bottom margin affecting text of the publisher's ads; additionally most have contemporary pencil marginalia to upper covers.

A substantial collection covering the major events of the Spanish-American War the earliest issue opening with General Dewey's "annihilation" of the Spanish fleet in the Philippines in early May. However as sick and wounded troops began to return and the conditions of the war came to light the weekly news magazine's tone shows a marked shift. Within a couple of weeks the magazine's pro-expansionist articles had shifted entirely in the opposite direction and by September 8th the opening segment begins: "The sad condition of our returning troops has raised this inquiry to the minds of those whom Mr. Lincoln called 'the plain people': If we cannot administer affairs in our own territory better than Camp Algers Thomas Wikoff and Black have been administered how are we likely to administer the Philippine Islands ten thousand miles away" Indeed the coverage of the Treaty of Paris on December 10th speaks to the disillusionment wrought by the war. The opening segment on December 15th begins: "The treaty has been signed at last and we are in possession of Cuba Porto Rico and as much of the Philippines as the Spaniards possessed which is not much. ‎[Spanish-American War] [Massachusetts] Second Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry‎

‎Forty-Nine Photographs of the 2nd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Most Identified‎

‎Massachusetts 1898. The 2nd Massachusetts Volunteers mustered into service in May 1898 and within a month saw significant action in Cuba at the Battle of El Caney. They were one of three volunteer units from Massachusetts to see action on the Santiago Campaign. The regiment was inexperienced - 55% were untrained recruits. The lack of experience combined with their rifles giving off a very visible black smoke led to a heavy casualties in the Battle of El Caney. After an encampment near Santiago de Cuba in which a large number of the soldiers became ill with disease - estimates are as high as 65% - the regiment returned home in August. Historians have noted that soldier demographics changed considerably from the Civil War to the Spanish American war as the smaller number of troops and the lack of a draft led to a more enthusiastic army with higher morale.

The photographs in this group are interesting as a typological grouping of images of untrained soldiers and also for their historical value as most contain identifications to versos. The highlight of the group is forty-four uniformly mounted portraits of soldiers nearly all identified measuring 3 ¾ x 2 ½ inches each. ‎Chattanooga: Times Print 1898. Very good. 29pp. Narrow 12mo. Original red cloth cover gilt. Spine heavily chipped corners worn. Contemporary ownership inscription on front pastedown contemporary notations to several leaves. Regimental roster for the Second Nebraska Volunteers mustered into service for the Spanish American War at Lincoln in May 1898. The regiment never saw active duty spending time training at Chickamauga before being transferred to Omaha and then mustered out in October of the same year. This copy with the ownership inscription of Irene G. Courtnay dated September 2 1898. Irene has made notations about several of the men -- presumably friends or acquaintances -- in the Remarks section of some pages. On the page for Company B she has written "Ernest G. Briggs drowned in Chickamauga Creek. 1st death in 2nd Neb. Regiment." Rare and likely produced in limited numbers for friends and family. Only a single photocopy reproduction located in OCLC. Wrappers soiled creased and chipped with contemporary ownership inscription on front wrapper. First and last leaves detached from text block text block itself detached from wrappers. Good only. A scarce historical photobook that doubles as a catalogue for a Chattanooga photography studio at the outset of the Spanish-American War. Named after Union General George H. Thomas Camp Thomas was a massive temporary military training facility established at the Chickamauga Battlefield in Georgia during the Spanish-American War. The camp hosted up to 70000 troops but became a national scandal after deadly disease outbreaks. The work features seventy total monotone photographs from third-page to full-page with brief printed captions and plate sizes memorializing various scenes at Camp Thomas in 1898. The subjects of the photographs include military structures scenes on the training ground soldiers from various state units in small and large groups soldiers hosting local visitors the large corral of horses at the camp monuments inside the camp / national park views of the natural scenery and more. According to explanatory text on the inside front wrapper "the main idea is to show by photograph such scenes of every day occurrence; routine work both on and off duty as will give nearest a correct idea of what the life of a soldier in camp is made of or as you would see him were you on the grounds in person."

The rear wrapper reveals an additional motivation for the publication of the work in the form of instructions for ordering any of the photographs featured within. Such is the reasoning behind the plate sizes listed by each example. The Chattanooga studio Sidebottom & Kerr states that "Every Plate in this Book was made expressly for it and having the negative can furnish upon short notice photograph of any plate." The company offers to send the catalogue free of charge to anyone east of the Rocky Mountains. A scarce and unusual photobook that does double duty as a Tennessee photographic studio's order book. ‎[Spanish-American War]: [Philippines]: [Rear Admiral George Dewey]‎

‎The Battle of Manila. Fought May 1st by Rear Admiral Dewey. Spanish Loss: 11 Ships 150 Killed 250 Wounded. American Loss: None caption title‎

‎New York: Muller Luchsinger & Co 1898. Color chromolithograph 16 x 20 inches printed on thick glossy paper. Corners a bit chipped several short closed edge tears minor surface wear. Image area still vibrant and clean. Very good overall. A striking and very rare lithograph capturing an important moment during the Spanish-American War specifically the American Navy's assault on Manila Bay in the Philippines in 1898. In the present scene three U.S. warships from the Asiatic Squadron in the left and middle including Admiral Dewey's flagship the U.S.S. Olympia fire their guns toward a few retreating ships flying the Spanish flag. A Spanish ship at middle right is almost completely sunken with just a portion of the flag peaking above the water. The scene depicts the first major engagement of the Spanish-American War a decisive victory for the American Navy that stands as one of the most lop-sided naval battles in history. During the course of the encounter the Spanish Pacific Squadron was destroyed and effectively ended Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines. The bombardment was commanded by Rear Admiral George Dewey 1837-1917 whose head-and-shoulders portrait appears in the bottom left corner.

The work was accomplished by the New York firm of Muller Luchsinger & Company a prolific but still somewhat obscure producer of prints lithographs and chromolithographs in the latter-19th and early-20th centuries. OCLC records just two institutional copies at the Library of Congress and the Clements Library. A dynamic and patriotic American naval scene picturing the United States Navy's obliteration of the Spanish Navy in Manila. Muller, Luchsinger & Co unknown‎

Oden of the 36th Volunteer Infantry for a Certificate of Merit for gallantry during an engagement with Insurgents native Filipinos who rebelled against American rule after Spain ceded the islands to the United States in the mountains near Mangaterem on November 28 1899 during the Spanish-American War. According to the text of the letter "When the attack was finally made he tore down the mountain side at the head of a half dozen men into the midst of a large number of Insurgents shooting right and left and displaying great fearlessness and gallantry. His enthusiasm and unconscious fearlessness was something pleasant to see." Certified as a true copy of the letter by a Buffalo Soldier a First Lieutenant in the 10th U.S. Cavalry. unknown‎
