‎[Vietnam War] Shore II, USMC, Captain Moyers S‎

‎The Battle For Khe Sanh.‎

‎<p>Washington DC:: U.S. Marine Corps 1969. First Printing of the First Edition. A Very Good Plus copy in illustrated wraps with a small chip missing from the backstrip. No hardcover edition was issued. This is the story of the defenders of Khe Sanh--and the epic 77-day struggle which not only denied the North Vietnamese Army a much needed victory but reaffirmed to the world the intention of the United States to hold the line in Southeast Asia. In addition to having been a contest of men and machines this was the test of a nation's will. As a history this work is not intended to prove any point but rather to record objectively the series of events which came to be called the Battle of Khe Sanh. These events spanned a period from April 1967 to April 1968. Uncommon.</p> U.S. Marine Corps, hardcover‎

‎[VIETNAM WAR] BROWNE, Malcolm W‎

‎The New Face of War‎

‎Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill 1965. First Edition. First Printing. 8vo. 22cm x 14.5cm. Publisher's pale green embossed cloth. Dustjacket. Titled in dark brown and red to spine and front board with an embossed flame design in blind to front board. Clean and strong with some light bumping to the spine ends in bright pictorial dustjacket with some fraying and scuffing to the spine ends a very good. clean copy indeed. 284pp. Internally clean. With 17pp. of photographs to the middle of the book taken by the author including a sequence of images of the Buddhist monk Thich Quang Duc self immolating in Saigon on June 11th 1963 the capturing of which event gained Browne lasting recognition and won him a Pulitzer. Another rather more significant effect of Browne's photograph is that by the morning of June 12th John F. Kennedy had the photograph on his desk pointed at it and bluntly told US Ambassador to Vietnam Henry Cabot Lodge who contributed the preface to this book "This sort of thing has got to stop." Whilst that might sound like a relatively mild response to the suicide by fire of a respected holy man it effectively signalled the end of US support for the Ngo Dinh Diem regime and changed the course of the next ten years of conflict and upheaval. Clean and bright in a strong handsome photographic dustjacket with some very light edgewear and scuffing a near fine copy. 275pp. Internally clean. Top edge stained yellow. A review copy with the Random House slip laid in at the front. A pretty searing indictment of the tactics and methods of the US military machine in Vietnam as described by a Special Forces veteran who served on Project Delta and in the An Lao Valley before famously quitting in disgust and becoming something of a celebrity amongst journalists and organisations campaigning for an end to the hostilities. ‎[VIETNAM WAR] KOLPACOFF, Victor‎

‎The Prisoners of Quai Dong‎

‎New York: New American Library 1967. First Edition. First Printing. 8vo. 22cm x 15cm. Publisher's black cloth. Dustjacket. Titled in silver gilt to spine clean and sharp in a strong and bright example of the dustjacket slight scuffing and edgewear. A near fine copy. 214pp. Internally clean. Highly controversial upon its publication and asking a number of questions that its 1967 readers clearly weren't comfortable discovering the answers to Kolpacoff's novel deals with a nightmarish situation in which a disgraced US soldier's refusal to fight lands him in a brutal prison camp. He is offered reinstatement if he participates in the interrogation and torture of a 17 year old Vietcong prisoner in a claustrophobic jungle hut with four other men all of whom possess varying reasons and motivations for being there but who are all simply through association equally damned. Kolpacoff was never in Vietnam which seems immaterial to the main question posed by this his first novel; it is not so much what we are doing to our enemies but what are we doing to ourselves New American Library unknown‎

‎[Vietnam War Literature] Robbins, Christopher‎

‎The Ravens. The Men Who Flew in America's Secret War in Laos.‎

‎<p>New York:: Crown 1987. First Printing of the First Edition. A Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket. The Ravens were American forward air-controllers who directed strikes from vulnerable low-flying spotter planes mainly in support of a Meo general named Vang Pao in Laos. "Advised" by the CIA this fierce warlord fought to keep the North Vietnamese out of the strategic Plain of Jars. Robbins Air America conveys the unique flavor of Raven-style combat and also explains how the diplomatic-military dynamics of the clandestine war in Laos fit into the overall American effort in Southeast Asia. The cast of characters is memorable: a swaggering rowdy bunch of mavericks whom their parent service the U.S. Air Force had great difficulty controlling they seemed to get by on sheer cussedness. According to the author they suffered the highest casualty rate of the Indochinese War. Robbins describes the poignant plight of displaced Meo/Hmong tribespeople who have settled uneasily in the United Statesincluding General Paoand their ongoing struggle to "propitiate the alien spirits of America." ‎[VIETNAM WAR] MOORE, Lt Gen Harold G [with] GALLOWAY, Joseph L‎

‎We Were Soldiers Once.And Young‎

‎New York: Random House 1992. Uncorrected Proof. 8vo. 24cm x 15.5cm. Publisher's printed card wraps some scuffing to the laminate here and there but otherwise a near fine copy. 402pp. Internally clean. Black and white charts and diagrams to prelims. A calm informed nothing held back account of one the most influential battles of the early stages of the Vietnam conflict. Moore and Galloway both present for the events of the book Moore in command and Galloway as a correspondent recount step by step the progress of the battle; the first major engagement of the war the first to extensively use helicopters to drop troops and equipment into battle and the first engagment to utilise B-25 bombers as air support. Galloway describes Ia Drang as "The battle that convinced Ho Chi Minh he could win." although that had little to do with the fighting ability of the 7th Cavalry and more to do with the swift tactics lessons the battle offered and the realisation that the US could take but not hold fight but not pursue and they could destroy but only what was on the surface. It changed the course of the conflict for both sides and took many prior strategic techniques back to the drawing board. Uncorrected proofs of this title are quite scarce. Random House unknown‎

Moore and Galloway here offer a detailed account based on interviews with participants and on their own recollections of what happened during the four-day battle. Much more than a conventional battle study the book is a frank record of the emotional reactions of the GIs to the terror and horror of this violent and bloody encounter. Both sides claimed victory the U.S. calling it a validation of the newly developed doctrine of airmobile warfare. Dated from context. <br /> <br /> An anti-Thieu poster from the final two years of the Vietnam War produced after the main body of American troops had left Indochina and before the fall of Saigon. The poster calls for the defunding of President Thieu's repressive regime in South Vietnam accusing him of building a police state while at the same time enabling the heroin trade carried on by his lieutenants. Quite ephemeral and in very nice condition. American Friends Service Committee unknown‎

‎[VIETNAM WAR] KRUEGER, Carl‎

‎Wings of The Tiger‎

‎New York: Frederick Fell 1966. First Edition. First Printing. Special Limited Edition number of copies unknown. 8vo. 21cm x 14cm. Publisher's full black leather titled in gilt to spine with decorative gilt ruling to the front board. Clean and handsome. In a black cloth slipcase duplicating the design of the dustjacket for the trade edition. Inscribed on an inserted handmade paper limitation page with some a rather lavish gold ink limitation statement by the author and his wife:<br /> "Mimi and Marguerite with the deep love and affection of The Kruegers Dec. 4 1966 Carl Krueger Ida Krueger"<br /> Billed as "The First Novel of The Vietnam War" and definitely early although according to Newman's bibliographical survey of Vietnam War fiction this rather showy and gung ho novel ranks as the 12th published novel although only 3 novels were published in 1965 whilst the next 25 or so all made na appearance in 1966. This limited presentation issue of the first edition seems completely unknown. Krueger was a decidedly old school author and screenwriter from the post WW2 adventure cinema genre he has writing credits on "Comanche" and "Sabre Jet" both scorching technicolour action movies. He produced the Wyler/Sturges wartime propaganda documentary "Thunderbolt" in 1944 and seems to have had a leaning towards spectacular aircraft movies where the machines occupied as much if not more screen time as the human actors. That certainly seems to have been the intention here it's very aircraft heavyobsessed with the Phantom II and the Vietnamese characters are portrayed as either Machiavellian or offensively stupid. The trade edition dustwrapper bears the statement: "Mr Krueger will personally produce Wings of The Tiger as the greatest air spectacle ever filmed." As far as can be established Mr. Krueger did not. Regardless of anything else it's an interesting illustration of the fact that going into Vietnam with a WW2 mindset was not something exclusively limited to armchair strategists and DC pundits it was also prevalent among those writing and filming accounts of the conflict. ‎1st edition. Original illustrated boards, Large 8vo 679, 35, 47 pages. Includes illustrations, facsimiles, map, and portraits. In Hebrew. Title translates as, “Wolozin: the book of the city and of the Etz Hayyim Yeshivah.” Includes articles in Hebrew, Yiddish and English. Includes bibliographical references. “On 17 September 1939, the first day of the Soviet invasion of Poland, Valozhyn was occupied by the Red Army. On 14 November 1939, Valozhyn was incorporated into the Byelorussian SSR. All previously allowed religious studies were forbidden. On the fourth day of Operation Barbarossa, on 25 June, 1941 Valozhyn was bombed, captured by troops of the German Army Group Centre and mostly burned. Several Jews were murdered by German soldiers who entered the town. On the next day, a 12-member Judenrat was appointed by the Gestapo and shortly after Stanislaw Torsky, a member of the Polish National Democrats ‘Endek’ party with strongly antisemitic views, was appointed mayor. On his second day as mayor, he ordered the arrest of the town doctor along with his daughter, and 10 other Jewish people, who were savagely beaten and shot. On 25 July 1941, Valozhyn was placed under the administration of the newly formed Generalbezirk Weißruthenien of Reichskommissariat Ostland. In August 1941, the Jewish residents of the town, approximately 3500 people, were moved to a Ghetto in the "Aropzu" neighbourhood, along with Jewish residents from the neighboring towns Vishnyeva, Halshany and Ashmyany. The Jews, as well as Russian prisoners in the area, were subjected to forced labour, tortured, underfed, and many of them publicly murdered. Local Christians who were caught having mercy or assisting the Jews in giving food received a similar fate…..On 5 July 1944, Valozhyn was recaptured by troops of the Soviet 3rd Belorussian Front during the Vilnius Offensive. Following its liberation, several Jews who returned openly to Valozhyn were murdered by local townspeople. It was initially raion centre in Navahrudak Voblast (1939), later in Baranavichy Voblast (1939–1944) and Molodechno Voblast (1944–1960) before passing to Minsk Region” (Wikipedia).
