Fourteenth printing inscribed by Jimmy Doolittle 1896-1993 of Landmark Books No. 35 and listing to “From Pearl Harbor to Okinawa†in ads at rear. Conceived originally in January 1942 just one month after the devastating Japanese attacks on Pearl Harbor was quickly organized with tests of B-25 B-26 and B-23 Bombers on the USS Hornet CV-8 and the Mitchell proved it could take off easily but not land. Colonel Jimmy Harold Doolittle who was involved in the original planning agreed to lead the task force launched from about 600 miles East of Tokyo drawing 16 B-25 Mitchell bombers from the USAAF 17th Bombardment Group. The Japanese were taken by surprise with the use of long-range US Army bombers and after dropping their loads of high explosive and incendiaries flew on to ditch and crash in China with 1 landing intact at Vladivostock. The raid although having little actual impact on the Japanese War effort proved decisive in changing the course of World War II and affected Imperial Japanese War planning by encouraging their fateful and decisive loss later at the Battle of Midway. Doolittle received the Congressional Medal of Honor for the raid and was a renowned test pilot flight instructor aided in the development of horizontal and directional gyroscopes and later was commander of the North African Strategic Air Forces the 15th Air Force in the Mediterranean and later the 8th Air Force. First edition of this remarkably scarce souvenir yearbook for Company G which was Class 29 and the last class to complete Officer’s Candidate School for the Adjutant General’s Office in 1944. Officer’s Candidate School’s had been proposed originally in 1938 by Brigadier General Singleton to train officers for the coming conflict but were not established until July 1941 with the first classes graduating in Sept. 1941. General Omar Bradley instituted strict discipline code of honor and rigorous training to create officers and 1000’s took part with about 67% graduating. The Adjutant General’s Office trained officers for Army administration how to negotiate supply problems understanding the vast variety of Army regulations and forms and facilitate more rapid deployment of troops and material. As seen in the photographs here their training was carried out in conjunction with WAAC training for women who shared Fort Washington facilities as well as WAAC detachments carrying out the grueling administration communication and transportation functions for men trainees freeing personnel for overseas deployments. ‎[World War II – The Philippines – Battle of Manila] Unknown Photographer‎

‎Twenty-one Photos Showing the Aftermath of the Battle of Manila‎

‎Manila The Philippines 1945. Twenty-one photos: twelve measuring 2 ½ x 2 ½ inches most with stamped captions verso; nine measuring 2 x 3 ¾ inches most with captions on negative. Some wear; excellent. Imperial Japan occupied the Philippines from 1942 until its surrender in 1945. From early February to early March of 1945 American and Filipino forces fought to drive the Japanese out of the Philippines’ capital city of Manila. Though successful this campaign was incredibly destructive to both the infrastructure of Manila and to its people—including mass murder and rape of Filipino civilians by Japanese forces. Offered here are twenty-one photographs of buildings taken before and after the destruction of the city with most the twelve smaller photos showing the aftermath. Locations include several churches and university buildings the treasury building legislative building Manila Central Post Office and others. The photos taken after the battle are arresting showing Manila’s ruined architecture burnt out trees and downed power lines. unknown‎

‎Cleveland 1942. Silver prints most 6 ½ by 9 with various editorial marks and identifiers to versos. A collection of women’s fitness press photographs taken around Cleveland in 1942 from the archives of the Cleveland News. Excellent. A collection of twenty-two photographs documenting women’s fitness programs in Cleveland in 1942. The programs and corresponding articles in the Cleveland News appear to be the work of Eleanor Dearnley physical education teacher at Flora Stone Mather College. Other photographs show women’s fitness activities at the Lakewood Community Center also in Cleveland. There are several examples of similar local efforts in support of the national “Keep Fit for Victory†Campaign.

The photographs show women in a range of activities - basketball stretching calisthenics volleyball etc. Some of the photographs are graphically hand-painted by the editorial staff. Most pictures have corresponding articles pasted onto versos. The images are generally quite playful in nature - perhaps because it was early in the war or because the pictures were intended as morale boosters. A generally quite well-preserved group in excellent condition except for the above-mentioned editorial marks. unknown‎

‎[World War One][15th Infantry, Known as the "Harlem Hellfighters"]International Film Service / Underwood and Underwood, Photogra‎

‎Two Press Photographs Relating to the 15th Infantry‎

‎New York: Underwood and Underwood 1919. First Edition. Gelatin silver prints 7 ¾ x 5 ½ inches each on 11 ½ x 7 inch black paper mounts captioned with affixed text. Very Good. Two WWI-era press photographs related to the Negro 15th Infantry Division of the New York National Guard a.k.a. the 369th US Infantry Regiment and their white commander Colonel William Hayward. One photograph shows the division on parade in New York following their return from combat duty in France in 1919 the other is a well-known image of Hayward who organized the all-black unit and served as its leader. Fighting for a record-breaking 191 consecutive days alongside French troops in the trenches the regiment became known as the “Harlem Hellfighters.†

The opportunity for African-Americans to serve in WWI arose from the Selective Service Act of 1917 which drafted all men between the ages of twenty-one and thirty. Special segregated training camps were established and units were formed. The US National Archives states that 200000 African-Americans served in Europe during WWI but only 42000 saw combat. When the 15th Infantry arrived in France in 1918 Hayward was committed to the idea that his unit would fight on the front lines. After General Pershing refused to integrate them with the full US army Hayward pushed for another assignment under French command. Unlike many other segregated divisions in WWI the 15th aka 369th was eventually sent to the trenches. Its members' distinguished service brought honor and fame. Before leaving the US in 1917 the regiment had not been allowed to participate in the New York National Guard’s farewell parade. When they returned victorious Hayward ensured they were publicly honored.

Both with various press stamps to versos. Small closed tear of about a half inch to upper edge of parade picture good overall. Hayward portrait with some rippling at edges very good overall. Underwood and Underwood unknown‎

Oregon and Portland were well known for their extreme restrictions of allowing African-Americans to settle in the State and Area and in fact barred African-Americans from voting until the law was revoked in 1927 and continued redlining after the War ended which forced over 20000 people to still remain living in what was originally intended to be temporary housing in Oregon’s second largest city. ‎[World War I]. [American Expeditionary Force, Siberia]‎

‎Vernacular Photograph Album Documenting the Allied North Russian Intervention in Vladivostok Just After World War I‎

‎Mainly Vladivostok 1922. Very good. 261 images about half real photo postcards and half vernacular photographs between 2.5 x 1.5 inches and 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Oblong folio. Contemporary brown leather photograph album string-tied. Lacking fore-edge flap spine chipped moderate rubbing and scuffing to boards. Minor occasional wear to photographs. A unique collection of photographs documenting the joint military expedition by Allied Forces into Vladivostok in southeastern Russia after the conclusion of World War I the October Revolution and the Russian Civil War most likely assembled by an American soldier serving there at the time. The American contingent of the incursion was called the American Expeditionary Force Siberia which partnered with nine other countries to attempt to bring stability to the region rescue 40000 members of the Czechoslovakian Legion being held up by Bolsheviks outside Vladivostok protect and retrieve American supplies in eastern Russia and stem the early spread of Communism. A similar expedition to northern Russia now known as the Polar Bear Expedition was attempted in Archangel. By practically every standard the joint missions failed and in fact damaged relations between the Allied Forces and Russia especially for the United States for decades to come.

The present collection of photographs and real-photo postcards opens with several photo postcards with printed captions showing parades of the military forces of the various Allied countries who participated in the expedition to Vladivostok as they arrived in the city. These include the British Army landing in Vladivostok the Imperial Japanese Expedition marching in front of the Czech Headquarters the Japanese Vanguard relieving the Imperial Japanese Naval Party the French Army landing in the city the Allied Naval Fleet in the Vladivostok harbor and two views of the landing of the American Army. Two additional captioned postcards show the Czech forces joining the French Army and a rather shocking image of about ten dead Czech soldiers with the image captioned "Czech victims in vicinity of Nicholoske former Bolshevik Head-quarters at Vladivostok."

The remainder of the photo postcards and photographs capture additional parades numerous street scenes but also scores of images showing the outskirts and countryside around Vladivostok ships from various countries anchored in the harbor or trying to navigate the icy conditions military patrols often carrying weapons American and other soldiers interacting with the locals scenes along the railway views of refugees fleeing the region and much more. Upon arriving in Vladivostok American soldiers were tasked with guarding segments of the rail lines of the Trans-Siberian Railroad running into and out of Vladivostok. American forces are seen here performing those duties but also overseeing a temporary dormitory of beds in an evacuation hospital patrolling the area around the city as well as the refugees along the railway hanging out in their makeshift barracks and more with one image even showing a group of American soldiers posing in baseball uniforms.

Particularly striking are the images of the indigenous refugees posed near the railroad and in other locations. Some of the subjects appear to be Siberian nomads but others traveling along the rail line are almost certainly Czech refugees fleeing Russia after their role in fighting for their own freedom against the new Russian regime. Several photos here capture groups of people obviously en route to somewhere else along the railroad at train depots and resting in makeshift encampments or tent cities overseen by military personnel.

Historical material from the Vladivostok expedition is exceedingly rare especially images of soldiers with boots on the ground. The present collection provides a fascinating glimpse of life in Vladivostok during this volatile moment in Russian history as well as a notable instance when American and Allied gunboat diplomacy utterly failed. unknown‎

‎923rd Engineer Aviation Regiment IX Engineer Command 1945. Wraps. The 923rd Engineer Aviation Regiment was a segregated African American unit activated August 1 1942 at Eglin Field Florida under the command of Colonel I.D. Brent. Sent to the United Kingdom to construct vital airfields for the American strategic bomber offensive the regiment arrived on August 14 1943 establishing its headquarters at Eye Suffolk. The 827th 829th 847th and 859th Engineer Aviation Battalions were joined to the regiment giving it a total of approximately 3200 black enlisted men and 130 largely white officers and making it the largest African American unit stationed in the United Kingdom during World War II.

According to this unit history "The two greatest accomplishments of the men of this Regiment were the construction of Eye and Debach airdromes in England. The men of this organization worked long hours learned new trades and skills and gave up much treasured off-duty time to meet the exacting completion dates which were imposed upon us. On D-Day 6 June 1944 the first flight of Liberators took off from Debach; these planes together with those from Eye which had already been bombing Germany for several days dropped many hundreds of tons of bombs on the invasion beaches of Northern France in support of the invading Armies."

Following the successful Allied invastion the 923rd built airfields in France for the First Tactical Air Force supporting the 7th Army and the First French Army advancing from the south. "In one case the Battalions joined together for the quick construction of a field for French fighter-bombers at Luxeuil finishing the runway in record time just as the first planes arrived. Later we maintained and built new facilities for Ninth Air Force fields. After V-E Day the Regiment took its part in the Occupational Air Force Program and completed two of the first fields which are to be used in policing Germany and enforcing the peace which we have won."

This visual record of the 923rd Engineers includes images of the regiment's activities throughout the war. A photograph of the regiment drilling on Organization Day September 21 1944 is captioned: "the largest assemblage of colored troops in the ETO." There are also snapshots of boxer Joe Louis visiting the troops and a rehearsal by the famous U.S. Army Negro Chorus which was comprised of 200 members of the 923rd Engineers who performed at the Royal Albert Hall in September 1943 with tenor Roland Hayes and the London Symphony Orchestra and subsequently went on tour to Liverpool Manchester Glasgow and Edinburgh. The images are accompanied by a brief unit history a detailed description of the Eye and Debach airdromes a list of the airfields constructed improved or maintained by the 923rd Engineers and an "In Memoriam" listing the names of those who had died in service during the war.

Oblong quarto: 41 p. with numerous photographic illustrations. Goschen geantwortet daß wir die belgische Neutralität aus Nothwehr hätten verletzen müssen ich habe alle unsere zwingenden Gründe auseinandergesetzt und alle in London abgegebenen Versicherungen nochmals wiederholt. / Jagow.’ See Image. ‎“America is not and never was a matter of race or ancestry.â€‎

‎
Wartime poster 27 ¾ x19 ¾ large eagle engraving at the top of the poster printed in red and black. Creases where folded. This rare U.S. Government wartime poster attempts to promote equality by reminding Americans that race and ancestry shouldn’t matter in our country. It reminds us that every American "should be given the opportunity to serve the country" and help the war effort. While this was certainly a noble goal this poster was printed at a time when our armed forces were still largely segregated.
U.S. Government Printing Office:‎
