Forty Seven Fac-Simile Drawings by American Artists
New York: National Arts Club 1918. Hardbound. Portfolio case is worn chipped and tattered. Contents generally VG with age toning. Cardboard portfolio with ties and tipped-on facsimile of woman's head. 50 leaves inside contents 46 of 47 called for images 1 duplicate image one uncalled-for image and reproduction of written text by Pennell. "This unique collection of drawings was contributed to the "American Artist's War Emergency Fund" by forty-seven American artists to be disposed of for the benefit of this fund." Second leaf is a lithograph of a handwritten brief essay on lithography by Joseph Pennell. 37th drawing in the portfolio is also by Pennell. This copy has two copies of a contribution by Henry Walker and lacks the contribution listed for Ben Foster. There is however an unlisted contribution by G.H. Woman's Handwritten Civil War Era Letters
Westhampton likely Massachusetts 1861-1864. Ephemera. Fine. Group of 13 manuscript letters black ink in tidy cursive addressed to "Hattie" who is perhaps in Springfield. Most are signed "Mother" one the last and only letter in pencil is signed "Sister Anna" and all are dated 22 April 1861 - "Sabbath Eve" May 1864 and located in Westhampton. A few are somewhat faint but still legible -- otherwise condition is fine. <br/><br/>An interesting group of letters quintessential for their reports on the health of seemingly everyone in town and for their concern with the American Civil War. "I am taking a great interest in war matters feel curious to read the daily paper think the North will come off conquered and I hope without shedding Oceans of blood" she remarks in the earliest letter in the group. Some remarks from later letters include: "We heard that Bolton and Alvin Clark were sick at Annapolis and that Henry Smith is a prisoner at Richmond. Mother England blusters about terribly doesn't she Hope she isn't going to declare war against us."; "Our people have had no letters since the battle are expecting some daily. Edward Coyt of Huntington was one of the wounded. After the battle of Roanoke he wrote to his folks he'd seen enough of war."; "Our men A. P. Bridgman Davis Burt Bartholt Bissell Edward Delany Charles Land Henry Sulliver a fellow living at Capt Custs and an Irishman. So you see we send seven married men."; "Frank Hule was killed in the battle at Murfeesboro Dec 31st by the first fire of the Rebs"; plus a few more comments and names. It established the Beth David Hospital to aid members and newly arrived immigrants around 1912 and contributed to the People's Relief Committee in 1919. The Federation sent a delegate to the Versailles Peace Conference in 1919. In 1920, the organiztion dropped the word "Russian" from its name and in 1926, changed the word "Hebrews" to "Jews". The Organization established the related World Federation of Polish Jews in 1935 for relief and economic assistance for Jews in Poland. The women's division, Ezra, was organized in 1931. The Federation cooperated with the Association of Jewish Refugees and Immigrants from Poland in publishing The Black Book of Polish Jewry in 1943. In the mid-1940s, they also coordinated relief activities of New York Polish landsmanshaftn on behalf of their home towns and landslayt, going on, in the 1950s, to campaign actively against antisemitism and racial discrimination. The proceedings of a series of secret meetings from 15 December 1814 to 5 January 1815 in Hartford Connecticut of Federalist delegates from Connecticut Rhode Island Massachusetts New Hampshire and Vermont "who were dissatisfied with Pres. James Madison's mercantile policies and the progress of the War of 1812 'Mr. Madison's War' as well as long resentful over the balance of political power that gave the South particularly Virginia effective control of the national government. The more extreme delegates raised the possibility of secession but others sought only to dictate amendments to the Constitution that would protect their interests. Ultimately the convention adopted a strong states' rights position and expressed its grievances in a series of resolutions against military conscription and commercial regulations along with some stringent criticisms of Madison's administration that were agreed to on January 4 1815. Even as the convention finished its business however a British sloop of war was beating its way across the Atlantic with dispatches containing the peace terms that had been agreed to in the Treaty of Ghent ending the war. Moreover as the convention's emissaries approached Washington D. C. they were met by the news of Gen. Andrew Jackson's unexpected victory in the Battle of New Orleans. By the time the emissaries arrived it was no longer possible to serve the kind of ultimatum contained in the convention's report. The war along with the national crisis it had brought about had ended. The secrecy of the Hartford proceedings also contributed to discrediting the convention and its unpopularity was a factor in the demise of the Federalist Party." - Encyclopedia Britannica. The statement also demanded the creation by the United Nations of a tribunal to try 'those responsible for the perpetration of crimes against humanity, ' and the removal of all racial barriers. The American Jewish Conference [was a] representative American organization established in 1943 at the initiative of B'nai B'rith to deal with the problems of Palestine and the European Holocaust. Originally composed of representatives of all major Jewish groups and delegates from local Jewish communities, the Conference was given direction from Zionist bodies which sought a pro-Zionist declaration by a body representing American Jewry as a whole. Such a declaration was overwhelmingly adopted at its New York assembly in August 1943. As a result, the American Jewish Committee seceded from the Conference. Nevertheless, the organization submitted a series of pro-Zionist statements to official national and international bodies and waged a public relations campaign until its dissolution in 1949. HAYM SALOMON, A GENTLEMAN OF PRECISION AND INTEGRITY
Original paper wrappers. 4to. 16 pages. 28 cm. A Bicentennial publication on the life, times and personal papers of the celebrated American Jewish patriot whose efforts helped finance Washingtons army and secure American Independence. Staple bound in fine paper wraps with raised signature title, fine tissue endpapers, background illustrations throughout, all text in red and brown ink, thirty four illustrations, and biographical chronology at end. Text details the life of Haym Salomon (Solomon) (17401785) , early American merchant and Revolutionary War patriot. Salomon, who was born in Lissa, Poland, arrived in New York about 1775 after wandering in Europe and became one of the most prominent 18th-century American Jews. During the Revolutionary War he was a distiller and sutler to the American army, and was captured as a spy by the British. His life was spared, and he served as an interpreter in their commissary department. Continuing to give information to the Americans, he assisted their prisoners to escape British captivity while operating a profitable victualing business in New York City under British occupation. Married to Rachel Franks in 1777, he had to flee a year later to Philadelphia, where he began a brokerage and commission business. In 1781 he became an assistant to Robert Morris, superintendent of the Office of Finance, after serving in a similar capacity as broker and treasurer for the huge expenses of the French army stationed in America. Morris characterized him as useful to the public interest. Salomon also lent money without charge to impecunious members of the Continental Congress, among them James Madison, who recommended him as our little friend in Front Street. In 1784 Salomon expanded his business activities to New York, opening a brokerage and auctioneering house there with Jacob Mordecai. A mason, Salomon was a major contributor in 1782 to the Congregation Mikveh Israel building, Philadelphia. He argued against a New Testament oath taken by officeholders in Pennsylvania and worked for political rights of Jews. Though a successful merchant, Salomon invested most of his money in Continental stocks and bonds, and his accounts showed a deficit at the time of his death. The newspaper obituary referred to him as an eminent broker of this city
remarkable for his skill and integrity in his profession, and for his generous and human deportment. He left four children and a widow, who later married David Hilborn. By 1799 she was living in the Batavian Republic.
Exaggerated claims were made for Salomon's services to the American Revolution, largely as a point of Jewish apologetics. Without question, however, he was a vigorous patriot at great personal risk, and a competent financial servant of American independence and of some of its leaders. 1935. Women War and Fascism. New York: The American League Against War and Fascism 1935. Original paper wrappers. 18 pages. "A protest against the use of women as cheap labor in factories and offices in the U.S. as well as in the fascist states. Munitions plants employ women at dangerous tasks with long hours and low wages. Discriminatory laws against women should be defeated and women's wages made equal with men's for equal work. Published in 1935 this pamphlet was issued by the American League Against War and Fascism a Popular Front organization formed in 1933 at the height of the Depression and global political instability. The League whose membership included communists socialists liberals labor leaders and clergy sought to organize broad resistance to the rise of fascism in Europe and to U.S. military expansion. In the preface to its founding conference at Madison Square Garden the League declared: "We call upon all who would defend peace democracy and the rights of the working people to unite in struggle against the forces of war and fascism." This 1935 publication situates the group within the international anti-fascist movement linking Mussolini's invasion of Ethiopia Hitler's consolidation of power in Germany and Japan's militarism in Asia to domestic threats posed by American reactionary forces.<br /> <br /> Pamphlets of the American League Against War and Fascism are historically significant both for their content and for their role in shaping early U.S. anti-fascist discourse. They illustrate how broad coalitions attempted to mobilize ordinary Americans against authoritarianism years before the United States entered World War II. Such ephemera are now scarce with surviving examples primarily held in institutional collections documenting the American Left peace activism and interwar political culture. For historians it offers a primary source on the rhetoric of Popular Front organizing and the early intersections of anti-war and anti-fascist politics in the United States. "These aspects of Fascism are beginning to develop here [in the US]. Our National Recovery program is concentrating authority in the hands of the executives. But the facts of wages, prices, the administration of the codes and the labor boards show that the real power is being concentrated still more in the hands of the most powerful and repressive monopolistic groups of financiers and industrialists. All the resources of the state are being used in the attempt to restore the broken down capitalist system. Again both labor and capital are being regulated. But increasingly, the right to strike, the only real defense of labor, is being taken away, and the alleged protection of the government substituted for it. But in the agencies of government which are supposed to administer this protection, labor finds the employers and their representatives entrenched in power. The renewed courses, until May 1941, consisted of 2, 500 pupils; the enlargement of courses offered, the programs, results, conditions for development, plans for new courses, statistics of the artisan courses, office work courses, agricultural courses, and housekeeping courses are given in detail. New York: Printed by James Rivington 1778. Britain seeks peace with revolutionary America First editions of these six tracts recording efforts at British-American reconciliation during the Revolutionary War. This copy has an excellent provenance: although not marked as such it comes from the family collection of William Eden 1744-1814 a key figure in the negotiations and the author of the latter two works. In 1778 Lord North appointed Eden a member of the Board of Trade and Frederick Howard 5th Earl of Carlisle 1748-1825 to a commission charged with reconciling Britain and America after the British defeat at Saratoga. Although the commissioners were authorized to grant every American demand short of independence the mission was not a success. Mostly this was because the Americans had already formed an alliance with France but Carlisle did not help matters by issuing a manifesto which criticized the French and insisted that Britain would fight to the bitter end. This attracted the attention of the Marquis de Lafayette who challenged Carlisle to a duel which was rejected on diplomatic grounds. The Collection of Papers published in New York by the king's printer includes Carlisle's manifesto along with various other letters and proclamations exchanged between the commissioners and Congress. The second third and fourth tracts comprise Congress's four-page response to the Carlisle manifesto a petition and an address to the commissioners from the loyalist merchants of New York City. These papers are often found with the Collection but are not always present and are listed as separate works in ESTC. In Eden's two tracts he defends his record with the commission and demonstrates his continued engagement with British and Irish politics. He had begun to push for Carlisle's promotion and in 1779 he secured for him the presidency of the Board of Trade. In 1780 Carlisle became Lord Lieutenant of Ireland taking Eden with him as his chief secretary. The other tracts comprise: b SECOND CONTINENTAL CONGRESS. Rhode Island: 24 March 1778. Sustaining Burgoyne's Wandering Army Revealing a crucial moment in the aftermath of Saratoga this 1778 receipt documents the transfer of £56000 from New York to support General Burgoyne's imprisoned Convention Army in Boston. The receipt was signed at a delicate point for the British Army. In the summer of 1777 General William Howe succeeded in taking Philadelphia but in October a separate force under John Burgoyne was forced to surrender to Horatio Gates following the two battles of Saratoga in the autumn of 1777. Subsequently the Convention Army named for the treaty of surrender was marched to Boston where they were held prisoner. Burgoyne was permitted to leave for England in April 1778 but his army remained in captivity until the end of the war. This immense sum of £56000 perhaps equivalent to £9500000 today was sent to Burgoyne to feed his starving army. The Battles of Saratoga represented the turning point of the Revolutionary War winning the assistance from France "which was the last element needed for victory" Morgan pp. 82-3. The receipt was signed by Richard Molesworth 1737-1799 a longstanding deputy paymaster in the War Office. Molesworth is briefly mentioned in a letter to Howe on 10 April 1778 where the need for money to support General Burgoyne and his army in Boston is discussed. Richard was the brother of the Robert 5th Viscount Molesworth who inherited the title from his cousin Richard Nassau Molesworth 4th Viscount Molesworth who died without heirs. This document was previously folded and kept in an envelope mounted on the front pastedown of a book from the Molesworth family library a first edition of the English translation of Souligné's The Desolation of France Demonstrated. It was gifted by Souligné to Robert Molesworth 1st viscount Molesworth 1656-1725. Molesworth has inscribed the front blank: "Donum Authoris" Gift from the Author and his note on the title-page reads: "Mons. De Souligny sic Grandson to the famous Du Plessis Mornay". The 1st Viscount Molesworth was an experienced political figure and a prominent member of the Privy Council of Ireland who later held a seat for Dublin County in the Irish House of Commons. The book has a later ownership inscription of Samuel Crompton 1753-1827 on the preliminary blank. Crompton was a pioneer of the spinning industry and was married to Harriet Molesworth the daughter of John Edward Nassau Molesworth. John was the great-grandson of Robert Molesworth 1st Viscount Molesworth. A 20th-century bookplate of another viscount Molesworth is pasted over the white envelope which held the subsistence receipt on the front pastedown. Also present is a manuscript bankers' draft dated 1796 signed by the 5th Viscount Molesworth requesting a payment to his son-in-law John Forster Hill. Single leaf 147 x 187 mm hand-written on both sides in black ink; the book: octavo 186 x 117 mm; also with manuscript bankers' draft dated 1796 and signed by Robert 5th Viscount Molesworth. The book: contemporary black crushed morocco raised bands spine gilt in compartments covers ornamentally gilt marbled endpapers. Ink annotations possibly in Crompton's hand. Recorded here are some of the major events of the War and of the larger global conflict between Great Britain and France including the tarring and feathering of John Malcom at Boston the battle of Lexington the capitulation of Burgoyne at Saratoga the capture of Dominica Senegal Grenada Pensacola and Tobago the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown the battle of St. Eustache the siege of Fort S.Philippe and the attack on Brimstomhill. There is also a general map of the United States and a composite map of the Gulf of Mexico Barbary Minorca and Tobago. Howes describes this as the first French book with a title-page mentioning the United States. American War of Independence 1782. Manuscript folio leaf from British governmental War Office ledger of payments to 'David Thomas Esq. / Carolina' re General Leslie and the British Army of the South headed ‘Extraordinaries in North America’.
10 and 11 October 1782. London War Office Regarding Carolina North America. With other accounts from 1826 on reverse. A valuable artefact of the American War of Independence: a leaf from a British War or Colonial Office ledger detailing payments to officials in General Leslie’s administration in Carolina in 1782. Among many details are references to the Loyalist units the North Carolina Highlanders and New York Volunteers as well as to Colonel Probart Howarth Governor of Fort Johnson and to Colonel de Benning Friedrich von Benning Commander of James Island where one of the last Battles of the war at which Kosciuszko was nearly killed would take place a few days after the entries those of the entries in this ledger. 1p folio. On one side of a leaf of laid paper with fleur-de-lys armorial watermark. Worn and slightly discoloured with closed tear along central fold line repaired with archival tape. The leaf is evidently part of a ledger. It is numbered 19 and headed ‘99 / Extraordinaries in North America’ with the payments being to ‘David Thomas Esqr / Carolina’. The sums involved are substantial: the opening balance brought forward is for £214908 11s 9 1/2d and the closing balance to be carried forward being £216710 7s 7 1/2d. The leaf has been neatly ruled in red with columns for ‘Warrants’ subdivided into ‘by whom granted’ and ‘Dates’ details of payments and sums paid. The ten payments nine of them dating from 10 October and the last one from 11 October 1782 are all on warrants granted to ‘Lt. Genl. Leslie’. The first six entries are highly detailed and the seventh to the tenth are additions to the sixth. First for £111 5s 0d: ‘Paid Capt. John McKinnon Depy. Quar. Masr. Genl. witht. dedn. being his Pay at 10s/. a day & Pay for Lieutts. Rankin & Bard as actg. Depy. Quar. Masr. Genl. at 5s/. a day from 1st. July to 30th. Septr. 1782. also for Lieutt. Condner from 1st. July to 17th. Septr. 1782 at 5s/ P day’. The second for £39 17s 4d: ‘Paid Lt. John Reeve of 82d Regt. of Foot witht. dedn. being Pay for himself as actg. Quar Masr. at 4s/8d. Pr day. & for Mr. Mc.Pherson as Actg. Adjt. to said Regt. at 4s/- Pr. Day from 1st. July to 30th. Septr. 1782’. Third for £155 13s 8d annotated ‘1 Warrt. at Audrs. Office’: ‘Paid Lieut Edwd. Scott Secy. to Genl. Leslie being for Money paid by himself to Coll. de Benning as an Extra Allownce during his Command on James Island from 16th. Mau to 6th Octr. 1782’. Fourth for £31 1s 10d: ‘Paid Ensn. Robt. Mc.Pherson being Pay for Captn. McRa. late of the North Carolina Highlanders at 5s/- Pr. day & for Ensn. McKay at 1s./10d. Pr Day from 25th. Septr. to 24th. Decr. 1782.’ Fifth for £502 16s 8d: ‘Paid Captn. Willm. Johnson Paymts. to the New York Volunteers being their Pay from 25th. Augst. to 24th. Octr. 1782’. Sixth £405 18s 4d: ‘Paid the followg. Civil Officers of South Carolina being an Allowce. made to them by order of the Lords Commissrs. of His Majesty’s Treasury all witht. dedn. Vizt. Honble Willm. Bull Esqr. Lt. Govr. from 5th. July 1781 to 10th. Octr. 1782’. Seventh for £88 15s 10d: ‘Honble. Thos. Skoltow Esqr. Secy. from Do. to Do.’ Eighth for £180 19s 2d: ‘Honble Thos. K. Gordon Esqr. Chief Justice from Do. to Do.’ Ninth for £31 14s 1d: ‘Jas. Johnson Esqr. Clerk of the Crown from Do. to Do.’ Tenth for £253 13s 11d: ‘Col. Probart Howarth Govr. of Fort Johnson from Do. to Do.’ In 1826 advantage was taken of the blank reverse of the leaf which was evidently torn out of the ledger at this point when three sets of itemized commissary accounts were given after ‘Stock taken Sept 1. 1826’ the sums involved in one case hams bacon butter and other items totaling £10000 5s 7d. It was then folded four times into a packet dated ‘Sept 1. 1826’. See Image. 10 and 11 October 1782. [London, War Office? American War of Independence. Three original hand-tinted engravings: portraits of ‘The Honble Horatio Gates Major General of the American Forces’ and ‘John Paul Jones’ and ‘First Action between the English and Americans at Concord in 1775’.
1780 1796 and 1806; all London. Three contemporary engravings now scarce. All three items are in good condition each laid down in a nineteenth-century mount. All have been trimmed the information concerning each comes from another source and all are partially tinted. ONE: ‘The Honble Horatio Gates Major General of the American Forces’. From ‘An impartial history of the war in America between Great Britain and her colonies’ R. Faulder London 1780. 9 x 16 cm; in 21 x 27 cm mount. A full-length portrait of Gates with right hand on chest and left hand holding the ‘Articles of Capitulation’. His coat is in red and his sword in yellow. TWO: Stipple engraving of ‘John Paul Jones’ by John Chapman. Oval 8.5 wide and 11 high; in 12.5 x 18 cm mount. Published in 1796. A head and torso portrait of a wide-eyed Jones bare-headed and with a brace of pistols in his belt. The background has been painted blue and his face pink and lips red. THREE: ‘First Action between the English and Americans at Concord in 1775’. 8.5 x 13 cm; in 21 x 14.5 cm mount. From ‘The British Martial Register’ London James Cundee 1806. The British footsoldiers whose coats have been picked out in red are urged forwards by an officer on a horse brandishing a sword and are fired upon by Americans on a wall.
