Un lavoro di storiografia molto professionale, dedicato all’Olocausto compiuto dal regime filonazista degli ustascia croati contro i serbi di religione ortodossa, oltre che contro le «consuete» vittime del nazismo: ebrei, zingari, oppositori politici. In quanto tale, esso un particolare interesse per chi si occupa di Shoah, antisemitismo e totalitarismo in generale. Ma rientra anche direttamente tra gli studi sulla Seconda guerra mondiale, nella sua variante balcanica in particolare. Inutile dire che le vicende più recenti della ex Jugoslavia affondano le loro radici in quel dramma vissuto a cavallo dell’occupazione nazista, con la nascita dello Stato indipendente di Croazia, le stragi, il lager di Jasenovac, la Resistenza, il regime di Tito. Ricordo anche che il Vaticano di Pio XII diede pieno sostegno al regime di Ante Pavelić e degli ustascia. Papa Giovanni Paolo II decise addirittura di beatificare nel 1998 il cardinale Stepinac che di quel tentativo di genocidio aveva avuto piena responsabilità morale e politica. Il libro è tradotto dal tedesco (prima edizione all’estero) ed è corredato da un enorme apparato di note (tutte a piè di pagina), oltre a repertori sulle fonti, gli archivi e i periodici. La bibliografia è monumentale e specialistica allo stesso tempo. E come al solito non manca l’indice dei nomi. Autori: Alexander Korb. Traduttori: José Fernando Padova.
