Secondo una vecchia battuta i libri più brevi della storia sarebbero: "Raffinate ricette inglesi", "Etica commerciale ebraica" e "Vittorie militari italiane". Al di là della divertente perfidia, esiste purtroppo un doloroso fondo di verità, per ciò che riguarda noi italiani. Che questo sia indice di una vocazione italica alla sconfitta, è arduo da sostenere, ma certo è un dato di fatto col quale fare i conti. Andrea Santangelo ricostruisce, con dovizia di particolari, una sconfitta che non è mai ricordata, nota agli specialisti col nome in codice che gli inglesi, nel dicembre 1940, diedero all'offensiva contro la 10a Armata di Graziani in Libia, Operazione Compass. Il tracollo e la resa delle truppe di Graziani, se per un verso sono l'esito emblematico dell'impreparazione alla guerra dell'Italia fascista, per l'altro si affiancano a Caporetto come disastro da cui l'esercito italiano seppe imparare, ponendo riparo alle mancanze più evidenti e raggiungendo quei più elevati standard di combattimento di cui darà prova in seguito, proprio in Africa, sotto il comando di Rommel, fino al sacrificio di El Alamein. Con gli alpini sulla Marmolada 1915-1917
br. Dalla fine di maggio del 1915 all'inizio di novembre del 1917, la Marmolada fu teatro di accaniti scontri tra gli alpini italiani da una parte e gli austriaci e i bavaresi dell'Alpenkorps dall'altra. Il possesso del massiccio costituiva infatti un elemento strategico particolarmente importante perché controllava la strada alla val di Fassa e alla val Badia, e quindi al Tirolo. A quote superiori ai 3.000 metri la guerra si trasformò in duello tra esperti alpinisti e coraggiosi soldati che da entrambi i fronti diedero vita ad azioni eroiche e spettacolari. Narrata con precisione e vivacità dal comandante della 206a compagnia, la vicenda degli alpini in Marmolada rappresenta una delle pagine più gloriose della storia alpinistica e militare.

31 July 1863. 'No. 13. Abstract B.'. Folio 3 pp. A printed form on three leaves held together by the original pink ribbon. Docketed on the reverse of two of the leaves with the army said to be 'At M<> Field'. In five columns: 'Date of Payment' 'Number of Voucher' 'To whom paid' 'On what account' and 'Amount' in 'Dollars' and 'Cts'. The first two columns left blank and the last three completed in manuscript comprising a numbered list of the names of sixty-five payees reasons for payment and sums paid. The text is clear and complete but the document is in fragile condition on aged and chipped paper. 'Capt Charles M Walker' receives $7.50 for a 'Court Martial' 'Thos Calvin' receives $120 for being a 'Forage Master' 'LC Thos Kendall' receives $72.96 for 'Mileage' and 'James Anderson' receives '$17.14 for "Extra Duty'. The Colonel Andrew J. MacKay Letters and Papers 1863-1865 are in the University of Tennessee Special Collections Library Knoxville. According to the Library's catalogue entry Mackay's 'primary duty was to provide supplies to the cavalry soldiers in the region'. The author writes this history from the perspective of a staunch Confederate painting the history of the war in colorful terms.
