Britain was at war with Germany in a struggle that was to become truly global. From Russia to North Africa from the Pacific to the Atlantic the battles were fought and the terrible casualties inflicted: 20 million Russians 5-1/2 million Jews 405000 Americans 357000 British - including 60000 civilians. In The World at War - now the subject of a major TV series - Mark Arnold-Forster describes the strategies campaigns and offensives on land sea and in the air that finally brought the Axis powers to defeat. Drawing on Cabinet minutes official histories personal interviews and his own knowledge of war as a motor torpedo boat commander he has produced what will become the outstanding concise history of the years 1939-45. The book includes a twenty-two page Chronology of the War Biographical Notes on the principal commanders and politicians and detailed maps of the major campaigns and battles. Mark Arnold-Forster was born in 1920 and is therefore just old enough to have served throughout World War II first as a merchant seaman and then in the Royal Navy. He spent most of the war in command of motor torpedo boats and of MTB flotillas based at Dover attacking German coastal convoys and minelaying in the continental estuaries. He was awarded the DSO the DSC was three times mentioned in despatches and was demobilized as a reserve Lieutenant in 1946.
