br. Il testo si sviluppa su un gruppo di argomenti principali che vanno dall'inizio della guerra fino al dopoguerra. Tra di essi, uno dei primi riguarda la ricostruzione completa del ciclo di operazioni militari che, nel luglio 1944, portarono francesi e americani a liberare la città. Un secondo argomento riguarda il destino tragico della famiglia di ebrei tedeschi, Hugo Lewin ed Erna Rosenbaum, che passarono, da internati civili, più di due anni a Castellina da dove, probabilmente nel febbraio 1944, furono inviati al campo di Fossoli e da quel campo, il 5 aprile 1944, ad Auschwitz dove trovarono la morte. Un altro argomento affrontato probabilmente per la prima volta, riguarda la presenza dei soldati neozelandesi a Castellina. Durante la loro permanenza ricevettero la visita di re Giorgio IV d'Inghilterra e di Winston Churchill. Infine, nella parte conclusiva, sono inserite le testimonianze di alcune persone di Castellina che vissero la guerra. Il testo è corredato da 30 immagini e 8 fra carte e mappe che permettono di seguire l'andamento delle operazioni militari.

br. Alle nove di mattina del 24 giugno 1944, una colonna tedesca sta marciando verso nord su una polverosa strada provinciale delle Colline metallifere senesi. È un reparto della 20. Luftwaffe-Feld-Division, in gran parte costituita da addetti ai servizi di terra dell'arma aerea forzatamente riconvertiti al più faticoso e infinitamente pericoloso mestiere di fanti. La Wehrmacht si sta ritirando verso l'Appennino, pressata dalle avanguardie della prima divisione corazzata della US Army e costretta a fronteggiare i sempre più frequenti attacchi delle formazioni partigiane. D'improvviso, da una siepe, il fuoco di una mitragliatrice avvia un breve ma furioso e sanguinoso combattimento con un gruppo della Brigata partigiana Boscaglia. Questo episodio - noto come il combattimento del podere La Casella, è il centro narrativo di una storia finora mai narrata, quella dei drammatici mesi della primavera e dell'estate 1944 nei territori di Chiusdino e Radicondoli, ricostruita grazie alle testimonianze degli abitanti incrociate con i documenti inediti custoditi negli archivi italiani, statunitensi e tedeschi.
