Fit les campagnes de pacification du Maroc comme officier des Affaires indigènes et commanda divers Goums. Fin des années 30, Fait partie du Cabinet du Résident Général et Commandant en Chef au Maroc, le Général Noguès. Fin 1939, Commande un bataillon du 4ème Régiment de Tirailleurs Marocains. Commandant du Cercle d'Alzilal fin 1940, il forme dans la clandestinité le 2ème groupe de Tabors Marocains, qu'il conduit à partir de 1942 sur tous les champs de bataille. Colonel en 1944, Général de Brigade en 1946, Commissaire de la République au Sud et au Nord Vietnam. Général de Bataillon en 1948, puis Général de Corps d'Armée, Résident Général en Tunisie, le 30 juillet 1954, puis, du 31 août au 8 novembre 1954, Résident Général au Maroc. A nouveau Résident Général en Tunisie, à partir de 1955, Haut-Commissaire. En 1956, Général d'Armée, Mis en disponibilité pour avoir publié "Vérités sur l'Afrique du Nord", livre qui lui vaut les félicitations du Général de Gaulle (dont la lettre est reproduite au verso de la couverture).

Presto o tardi si arriverà davanti a un recinto. Uno di quei recinti che esistono in tutto il mondo, uno di quelli che ci si augura di non dover mai varcare. Siamo nel 1942 e il padre di Bruno è il comandante di un campo di sterminio. Non sarà dunque difficile comprendere che cosa sia questo recinto di rete metallica, oltre il quale si vede una costruzione in mattoni rossi sormontata da un altissimo camino. Ma sarà amaro e doloroso, com'è doloroso e necessario accompagnare Bruno fino a quel recinto, fino alla sua amicizia con Shmuel, un bambino polacco che sta dall'altro lato della rete, nel recinto, prigioniero. John Boyne ci consegna una storia che dimostra meglio di qualsiasi spiegazione teorica come in una guerra tutti sono vittime, e tra loro quelli a cui viene sempre negata la parola sono proprio i bambini.
