Nel 1914 Vera si affaccia alla giovinezza. È brillante, anticonformista e decisa a cambiare un destino di moglie gentile e madre paziente, diventando una delle prime donne ammesse in un selettivo college di Oxford. Brittain's Great War diary is the basis of her classic 'Testament of Youth'; among the deeply moving entries are those recording the loss of her fiance Roland Leighton (at Hebuterne, December 1915) and the loss of the 'Lusitania'. Clare Leighton, the eminent illustrator and engraver who contributes the preface, is Roland Leighton's sister. The Thirties saw the publication of 'Testament of Youth', with Brittain mourning her dead and fearing the coming of the second onslaught. During the Second World War she increases her pacifist activities, primarily through the Peace Pledge Union, and delivers a vivid account of life at home during the Blitz.

br. A Canne, in Puglia, nel 216 a.C. si svolse una delle più sanguinose battaglie dell'età antica. Nel corso della seconda guerra punica, le truppe del cartaginese Annibale annientarono un esercito romano di dimensioni più che doppie. Fu un capolavoro tattico, che tuttora si studia nelle accademie militari. Massimo studioso della storia militare antica e in particolare di Annibale, Brizzi in questo libro racconta il contesto in cui maturò la battaglia (vale a dire la discesa in Italia dei cartaginesi), analizza la composizione delle forze in campo, descrive lo svolgersi dello scontro e ne mette in luce le conseguenze sull'andamento della guerra. Fra queste conseguenze, c'è anche la sconfitta decisiva che quattordici anni dopo a Zama i Romani guidati da Scipione avrebbero inflitto ai Cartaginesi: facendo tesoro degli insegnamenti tattici della sconfitta subita a Canne.
