1918. Brocton. 1918. ca. 275 x 152 cm. 2 S. Ausfaltbarer Brief mit detaillierter Adressierung und Zensuraufkleber. Papier etwas gerändert. Sonst gut erhalten auch der Brieftext ist gut zu lesen. Original-Kriegsgefangenenbrief aus England im Herbst 1918. Es handelt sich um einen Brief der aus dem Prisoner of War-Hospital im Brocton Camp Staffordshire abgesandt worden ist. Der Brief wurde von einem deutschen Soldaten an seine Eltern in Flensburg Schleswig-Holstein gesandt. Der Text ist auf drei Segmenten des ausklappbaren Briefs geschrieben die zusammen eine lange Seite ergeben. Der Brief ist äußerlich als Kriegsgefangenenbrief gekennzeichnet: "Prisoners of War. Pat. 2333/15." und benötigte keine Briefmarke. Neben den auf deutsch formulierten Anweisungen der Briten wie "Nicht hier schreiben!" oder "Nicht zwischen die Zeilen schreiben!" enthält der Brief außen einen Aufkleber der Lagerzensur mit dem Hinweis: "Opened By Censor P.W. 700". Der Brieftext durfte also keine brisante Information enthalten geschrieben wurde vor allem über Nahrung erhaltene Pakete Mithäftlinge etc. Im Kriegsgefangenenlager Brocton-Camp Staffordshire waren über 6000 deutsche Soldaten interniert viele starben durch die Spanische Grippe nach Kriegsende im Hospital des Lagers. Von diesem Prisoner of War-Hospital wurde kurz nach Kriegsende auch dieser Brief an die Eltern in Flensburg gesandt. Der Brief befindet sich zusammengeklappt noch immer im originalen Format über der handgeschriebenen Absenderadresse befindet sich auch der Stempel des Lager-Hospitals. br. 14 agosto 1944, frontiera italo-elvetica: tre uomini e due donne arrivano al posto di guardia di Novazzano, chiedono asilo in Svizzera. Tra loro vi è Indro Montanelli, "evaso" dal carcere di San Vittore. Comincia così, come per altre migliaia di fuorusciti, l'esilio elvetico di Montanelli che, negli anni, ha ricordato spesso il soggiorno ticinese. Traendone spunto per sottolineare il suo antifascismo, comprovato dai mesi di carcere, e la sua militanza nella Resistenza. E denunciare i fuorusciti che a Lugano gli avevano voltato le spalle, a suo giudizio senza una vera ragione. Tuttavia lo ha sempre fatto in modo vago, con dettagli che andavano modificandosi nel tempo. Questo saggio ripercorre proprio il periodo trascorso in Svizzera da Montanelli, ricostruendolo attraverso carte d'archivio, lettere, testimonianze e un paziente lavoro di ricomposizione dei tasselli sparsi di un mosaico diverso da quello consegnatoci dal suo protagonista. Un quadro che rivela elementi nuovi e un'inedita chiave interpretativa dell'intero iter biografico di Montanelli.
