There is some beginning rubbing to the spine ends and corners of the book covers. The text pages are clean and bright. There is a previous owner's gift notation on the half title page. It appears this was a gift for a professor at the University of Illinois from his students who signed their names on the free page after the last page of text. The dust jacket has edge wear rubbing several small tears and nicks. "Hamilton the commander of the Corinth section of Grant's division suggested what would eventually become Grierson's Raid. Subsequently due to Hamilton's insistence on procuring a command that would garner him more glory Hamilton offered his resignation. Grant quickly accepted. In the Western Theater of the American Civil War Confederate cavalry raids under commanders such as Lt. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest and Brig. Gen. John Hunt Morgan had harassed Union expeditions namely at the Battle of Parker's Crossroads where Forrest captured three hundred Union soldiers under Brig. Gen. Jeremiah C. Sullivan but lost all of the artillery pieces belonging to his own command. The task of drawing the attention of Confederate raiders away from the Siege of Vicksburg fell to Col. Benjamin Grierson a former music teacher who disliked horses after being kicked in the head by one as a child. Al tramonto, avevano rastrellato 1800 ebrei: ne selezionarono poche centinaia come «lavoratori» da deportare; gli altri, fossero donne, vecchi o bambini, vennero uccisi. Ordinaria crudeltà nazista, si direbbe; ma gli uomini del Battaglione 101 erano operai, impiegati, commercianti, artigiani arruolati da poco. Uomini comuni, reclutati per estrema necessità, che non erano nazisti né fanatici antisemiti, e ciò nonostante sterminarono 1500 persone in un solo giorno. E il massacro di Józefów non fu che il primo di una lunga serie: in poco più di un anno, il Battaglione 101 uccise altre 38 000 persone e collaborò alla deportazione a Treblinka e allo sterminio di oltre 45 000 ebrei. Alla fine della guerra, rimasero 210 testimonianze di membri del Battaglione 101: cosa pensavano, mentre partecipavano alla «soluzione finale»? Come giustificavano il proprio comportamento? E, soprattutto, per quale motivo furono così feroci ed efficienti nell'eseguire gli ordini?
