brossura Rubens Bulgarelli, zio dell'autore di questa ricerca, è stato uno degli 85000 soldati italiani caduti o dispersi sul fronte russo dal dicembre del 1942, durante la seconda guerra mondiale. Più di un terzo dell'Armata italiana in Russia (ARMIR) non fece più ritorno in Italia. Quella tragedia fu la conseguenza di due diverse offensive sovietiche che, nel dicembre 1942 sul fronte centromeridionale dell'armata e nel successivo gennaio su quello settentrionale, accerchiarono le nostre divisioni di fanteria prima e quelle degli alpini dopo, costringendole ad una duplice e drammatica ritirata. Calato nella prima e meno nota di queste due tragedie simili, il testo cuce le iniziali labili tracce del sergente Bulgarelli, artigliere del LXXIII gruppo di Artiglieria d'Armata, fino in Arbusowka, la "valle della morte", dove di lui si perdono ufficialmente le tracce il 23 dicembre 1942. Poi però il riscontro con fonti inizialmente non a disposizione, consente la ricostruzione di una storia più articolata e complessa che prende gli avvii nella caserma Passalacqua di Verona per concludersi sulla collina di Meskoff...

ill., ril. Carlo Orelli nacque a Perugia il 23 dicembre del 1894. Tra i primi soldati a superare il fronte austro-ungarico, fu l'ultimo fante italiano a poterlo raccontare. Vissuto tutta la vita a Roma, a 21 anni, dopo una breve esperienza come operaio, si arruolò. Grazie alla penna del narratore e poeta Nicola Bultrini, Orelli ha descritto ciò che la sua memoria ha sempre conservato. Con la mente ha lasciato Roma e la sua Garbatella per tornare sul Carso, dove ha combattuto. Ne esce un diario equilibratissimo senza ridondanti emozioni, ricco di particolari che di quella guerra trasmettono disumanità e dolore, coraggio e senso del dovere, in molti casi eroismo e martirio. "Lo sai che significa una guerra? È la morte. E nessuno ha piacere... alla guerra". La vicenda di Carlo Orelli - che è morto nel 2005 - è una testimonianza storica oggi quanto mai preziosa.
