1918. La caduta degli imperi
br. Al principio del 1917, i tre imperi in lotta sul fronte orientale erano vicini al punto di rottura, e tra i tre il più vicino alla crisi era senz'altro la Russia. Dopo la rivoluzione di febbraio, la capacità dei russi di sostenere lo sforzo bellico era crollata, e l'ultima disperata offensiva di Kerenskij vide il collasso definitivo delle forze armate. Questo aiutò la successiva rivoluzione bolscevica e una pace zoppicante, mentre le potenze centrali non riuscirono ad approfittare della situazione e, nel 1918, sia l'impero austro-ungarico che quello germanico si arresero e si dissolsero. L'autore segue non solo gli eventi più noti dell'ultima fase della Grande Guerra sul fronte orientale, ma continua a indagare le guerre tra gli Stati successivi all'armistizio del 1918, notando in particolare gli aspetti più critici per gli equilibri dell'area e le devastanti premesse per la terribile guerra che di lì a vent'anni sarebbe nuovamente scoppiata.

ill., br. I Nuotatori Paracadutisti. «Appartenere alle forze speciali, come gli NP, significa avere capacità di decisioni rapide, inventiva e coraggio da applicare in ogni momento. In addestramento e sul campo.» Il 1° aprile 1943 il ministero della Marina istituisce il gruppo NP, Nuotatori Paracadutisti. Il comando operativo è affidato a Nino Buttazzoni, già da due anni impegnato nella costituzione di un reparto speciale per «azioni di sabotaggio, di sbarco, di eliminazione di ostruzioni e di azioni dirette sul naviglio nemico». Ufficiale del genio navale, Buttazzoni, vero padre degli NP, somma una grande competenza tecnica a una carismatica capacità di comando. In queste memorie, scritte in prima persona con uno stile asciutto e di grande efficacia, racconta la nascita, le azioni e gli uomini di un reparto speciale, inquadrato nel battaglione «San Marco», che nella Seconda guerra mondiale si distingue su vari fronti. Dopo l'8 settembre si dividerà: una parte al Sud con gli Alleati, un'altra al Nord con la RSI. Le memorie si allungano nel dopoguerra dove Buttazzoni sarà, ancora una volta, protagonista dell'innovazione dell'industria navale italiana. (Con inserto fotografico)

AUTOGRAPH. The close of a typed letter SIGNED by Civil War General DANIEL ADAMS BUTTERFIELD as Treasurer.
Very good. - Daniel Adams Butterfield's signature as treasurer penned on a 2 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide piece of paper clipped from the bottom of a typed letter. The close signed by Butterfield as treasurer apparently called for the recipient of the letter to return a document or letter "to the Treasurer in envelope enclosed herewith". The close is additionally initialed in an unknown hand at left. Folded twice else very good. <p>The New York businessman Daniel Adams Butterfield 1831-1901 served as brigadier general in the Union army during the Civil War. While recuperating from wounds sustained at Gaines' Mill Butterfield revised the Scott Tattoo thus composing the bugle call "Taps" which is played at the end of military funerals and to signal "lights out". As Hooker's chief of staff he was later embroiled in his commander's political feuds with Burnside and Meade. Butterfield was wounded at Gettysburg and subsequently served in Sherman's Atlanta campaign. He went on to serve as Assistant Treasurer of the U.S. under Grant but was forced to resign when he abused his position to manipulate the price of gold. unknown

In questo volume si è cercato di impostare una riflessione sul tema della ricostruzione giudiziale dei crimini di guerra nazifascisti in Italia che ponesse in evidenza tre aspetti fondamentali: in primo luogo, la genesi e lo sviluppo (nonché il mancato sviluppo) dell'attività giudiziaria italiana sui crimini di guerra del secondo conflitto bellico mondiale, dall'immediato dopoguerra ad oggi. Quindi, l'analisi e la valorizzazione delle figure del testimone-persona offesa, anche in rapporto al problema del risarcimento del danno (come può essere definito e calcolato un danno che consiste nello sterminio di intere comunità, compresi giovani, bambini e neonati, e a cui si associa la devastazione e distruzione di interi villaggi o insediamenti rurali?). Infine, il collegamento con l'attualità dell'odierno diritto internazionale e umanitario, che riflette una realtà inquietante e tragicamente ricorrente, alla stregua della quale il passato sembra periodicamente rivivere offrendo strumenti di cognizione ed interpretazione.

The style is my own the material was furnished on the Border. The scenes through which I passed were in some respects supremely ridiculous and must be laughable; there were others which were inhuman and must therefore excite horror. To write of events in any other manner than that in which they occurred would not be a true history - Author's Advertisement." Howes M175; Graff 2645; Wagner-Camp-Becker 277. McNamara preached the gospel in northwest Missouri before accepting a call to a church in Chicago in 1853. In 1854 he was appointed as a missionary to the Kansas Territory. He started a parish at Ft. Leavenworth. "A vehement abolitionist he became involved in a heated argument with the post commander and was banned from the fort - KANZAS: The Territorial Years A K-State Libraries exhibit." McNamara became an arch-foe of W. P. Richardson General of the Kansas Militia and a flaming pro-slavery advocate. War Flying; The Letters of "Theta" To His Home People Written In Training And In War
London: John Murray 1917. HB. Originally published in colored stiff paper wraps this copy has been rebound on full brown leather gilt lettering with 5 raised bands on spine and a diagonal strip of blue cloth on the upper front cover. The cloth strip is 1.5" wide with dark blue edges and light blue center with a red line in the center. All edges of text block gilt. The original colorful front cover has been bound in. Signed on the ffep by Frank Messervy and inscribed "in memory of Ernest who was shot down in a fight over the German lines with Richthofen's Circus-1917. RIP." Probably referring to Captain Ernest Dyce Messervy member of 56th Squadron RFC killed July 20 1917. Both Ernest and Frank Messervy were members of the same Eton class prior to World War I. General Sir Frank Walter Messervy 1893-1974 was a British Indian Army Officer who saw action in France and the Middle East during World War I. During World War II he commanded the Indian 5th Infantry Division in the East African Campaign and commanded 4th Indian Division during the Battleaxe and Crusader operations as part of the Eighth Army. Transferred to India Messervy eventually was appointed to command IV Corps in it's drive to Rangoon in Burma. Old bookseller stamp bottom of rear paste-down only mark in book binding tight. Three small spots of soiling on rear cover but a rather handsome copy of this title. Book condition VG. John Murray hardcover

Spine with raised bands decorated and lettered in gold. Binding sun faded. Hardbound. First edition. Michael Gratz (1735-1811) Jewish-American trader, merchant, financier, and patriot was born in Langendorf, Upper Silesia, Germany. In 1758 he followed his older brother, Bernard, to Philadelphia. Together they set up a coastal shipping service between New Orleans and Quebec. They also became trusted bankers and legal agents for many of the most important persons in colonial America. The French & Indian Wars interfered with shipping, and the brothers took up the western frontier and India trade in Pennsylvania, Illinois and Kentucky. They, along with other important Philadelphia merchants, signed the Non-Importation Resolutions of 1765 to protest the Stamp Act. During the Revolutionary War the Gratz brothers supplied the Continental Army with substantial quantities of needed goods. With the British occupation of Philadelphia, the firm relocated to Lancaster, PA. Michael moved to Virginia during the Revolution, and though he took the oath of allegiance to that state in 1783, he apparently returned to Philadelphia within a short while. The famous and beautiful Rebecca Gratz (1781-1869) was his daughter. A very good copy of an important and scarce book. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! PA 47.
