Attaché aux valeurs démocratiques, il perçut très tôt la nature du fascisme et ses visées hégémoniques. Son Journal d'un militaire d'occasion s'ouvre par les années d'avant-guerre, que ce témoin privilégié analyse avec acuité, et se poursuit par son carnet de route de lieutenant de réserve sur la campagne de 1940 et la débâcle. Il est suivi d'observations sur la politique de Vichy que Gilbert de Chambrun, ayant rejoint le ministère des Affaires étrangères, put analyser de près, de juillet 1940 à juillet 1941, époque où, impuissant face à la collaboration qui s'aggravait, il se fit mettre en disponibilité. La deuxième partie de l'ouvrage évoque le retour à Marvejols et l'engagement dans la Résistance. De l'entrée dans la clandestinité à l'unification des mouvements de Résistance, Gilbert de Chambrun, nommé chef régional des FFI, partagera la vie des partisans qui luttèrent contre l'occupant et ses complices. Après les combats de la Libération et le retour à l'ordre républicain, le colonel FFI de Chambrun, redevenu lieutenant de réserve, participera à la formation de deux régiments d'infanterie, le 80e et le 8le, composés de maquisards volontaires qui, au sein de la 1re armée française, se battront victorieusement en Allemagne. Biographie: Né en 1909 à Paris, Gilbert de Chambrun, après des études à l'Institut de sciences politiques, a passé le concours des Affaires étrangères en 1934. Après différents postes et la période de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale et de la Résistance qui sont traités dans ce livre, il sera, après 1945, député de la Lozère jusqu'en 1955. L'opera di Chandler, corredata di mappe e cartine delle battaglie, di un indice dei nomi e di un imponente apparato di note, è un classico insostituibile della storia moderna.
