<p>A remarkable broadside advertising the sale of bulletproof vests to Union forces in North Carolina in the wake of the occupation of much of coastal North Carolina by General Ambrose Burnside's Expeditionary Force.</p> <b>CIVIL WAR.</b>Broadside. <i>"Good News to the Army."</i> Bartlett & Munn Agents for Manufacturers. Newbern N.C. April 17 1862. 1 p. 9¾ x 6 ½ in.<p><br /></p><p>"<i>We beg leave to say to the officers and soldiers of the Expedition that after some delay we have received another invoice of those Monitor or Bullet Proof Vests which we are selling at our stand opposite the Post Office and as it is impossible for us to visit all the various Camps please call and examine or order with measure of breast and waist which will insure a good fit. We shall be here only a week or two longer therefore it is for the interest of all who may wish to purchase to call immediately.</i>"</p><p><b>Historical Background</b></p><p>Several firms attempted to sell such bullet proof vests during the war with ads for body armor even appearing in <i>Harper's Weekly</i>. According to historian Byron Farwell "G. & D. Cook & Company of New Haven Connecticut offered to Union soldiers a 'soldier's bullet proof vest' in two models a seven-dollar model for officers and a five-dollar one for enlisted men and for a time early in the war the Atwater Armor Company also in New Haven produced two hundred per day. Although they were nonregulation in both Civil War armies a few volunteer regiments were quipped with them. They proved too heavy to be practical and the increased efficiency of weapons destroyed any value they may have had."</p><p>It is not known which company <i>"Bartlett & Munn"</i> represented. Advertising to Ambrose Burnside's troops who had occupied New Bern N.C. on March 14 1862 they name their vests "Monitors" in obvious reference to the Union ironclad who had stood toe to toe with C.S.S. <i>Virginia</i> in the Battle of Hampton Roads on March 8-9 1862.</p> books

When the Civil War broke out the newly-formed Confederate States of America needed to create a monetary system to finance the government and the war effort. The Confederate Treasury printed bank notes The Confederate States dollar was first issued just before the outbreak of the American Civil War by the newly formed Confederacy. It was not backed by hard assets but simply by a promise to pay the bearer after the war on the prospect of Southern victory and independence. As the Civil War progressed and victory of the South seemed less and less likely its value declined. After the Confederacy's defeat its money had no value and most notes were destroyed. Memphis: Memphis Bulletin 1863. About very good. Small broadside 8 x 4.5 inches. Previously folded. Short separation along top fold. Light tanning and foxing. An unrecorded Civil War song sheet that celebrates the accomplishments of the 11th Missouri Volunteers and several other regiments in the XVI Corps of the U.S. Army of the Tennessee. The sheet was printed on a Memphis newspaper press in March 1863 while the units were stationed at Germantown Tennessee east of the city. The lyrics by an unnamed member of the 11th Missouri attempt to immortalize the part played by the brigade in the successful siege and subsequent defense of Corinth which took place in the latter half of 1862. Also singled out for praise are the 47th Illinois and 5th Minnesota volunteer regiments. The 11th Missouri went on to participate in the siege of Vicksburg and later helped to drive Hood's Confederate Army out of Nashville. Not in OCLC. Memphis Bulletin unknown books

A New York Soldier's Affidavit Allowing a Proxy to Vote in the 1864 Election
<p><b>CIVIL WAR.</b>Partially Printed Document Signed by James M. Smith countersigned by Jerome B. Parmenter and Captain Joseph H. Allen. Richmond Virginia October 18 1864. 1 p. 8 x 12½ in. With printed envelope restating affidavit's claim on the outside. </p><b>Excerpt:</b><p>"<i>I James M. Smith a member of Company K of the 169th Regiment New York Volunteers…do hereby authorize and empower Nicholas Weaver of the town of Lansingburgh in the county of Rensselaer to cast for me and in my name and stead…my vote or ballot the same as if I was personally present at the general election to be held on the 8th day of November 1864.</i>"</p><p><b>Historical Background</b></p><p>On April 21 1864 the New York State Legislature passed "An Act to enable the qualified electors of this State absent therefrom in the Military Services of the United States in the Army and Navy thereof to vote." Each soldier and sailor needed to select someone at home who could cast his ballot for him.</p><p>In this Soldier's Power of Attorney James M. Smith of the 169th New York Volunteer Infantry authorized Nicholas Weaver to vote on his behalf in Lansingburgh New York in the 1864 election. In mid-October 1864 when Smith signed this document the 169th New York was in the trenches before Richmond Virginia. Three weeks earlier the regiment had suffered 21 casualties at the Battle of Chaffin's Farm. A few weeks after the election the 169th New York left on an expedition to Fort Fisher which led to its capture in mid-January 1865.</p><p>Republican President Abraham Lincoln was running for reelection against his former general Democrat George B. McClellan who was widely considered the favorite among his former troops. Instead Union soldiers such as Smith voted for their commander in chief in great numbers reelecting Lincoln using proxy voters like Weaver. Although no statistics exist for soldiers who went home to vote or voted by proxy as Smith did those 40000 soldiers who voted in the field gave 75 percent of their votes to Lincoln. He won reelection by more than 400000 popular votes and by an overwhelming 212 to 21 vote in the electoral college.</p><p><b>James M. Smith</b> b. c. 1820 was born in Essex County New York and enlisted on August 28 1862 at Lansingburgh New York as a private in Company K of the 169th New York Volunteer Infantry. He was promoted to chief bugler on April 28 1864 and was mustered out with his regiment at Raleigh North Carolina in July 1865. A month earlier he is listed on the census of Lansingburgh with his wife Elizabeth three of their children and his mother. His profession was listed as "soldier" and he lived next door to Nicholas Weaver and his family. By 1870 his wife and three children still lived next door to the Weavers but James M. Smith was not present.</p><p><b>Nicholas Weaver</b> 1798-1878 served as the president of the village of Lansingburgh New York in 1840 and 1842. In 1865 he was a river captain in Lansingburgh where he lived with his second wife Phoebe Homan and four of their eight children next door to James M. Smith and his family.</p><p><b>Jerome B. Parmenter</b> 1838-1910 graduated from Union College in 1857. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1859. Parmenter mustered in as a 1st lieutenant in Company A of the 169th New York Volunteer Infantry in August 1862. He became captain of Company I on December 31 1862. On December 2 1863 he was discharged for disability and returned to his law practice. Because Parmenter filled in and witnessed this power of attorney form he may have been revisiting his old regiment for the purpose of gathering such documents to return to Rensselaer County in time for the election. In 1868 he bought a half-interest in the <i>Troy Press</i> newspaper for which he served as editor until the 1880s. By 1890 he lived in Bennington Vermont.</p> books

An Early Civil War Letter Researching A Soldier’s Death
L. 1pg. 7 ½†x 9 ¾â€. March 7 1862. Washington D.C. A letter from the Bell and Green National Claim Office about missing Civil War soldiers. The company wrote on their letterhead to Alexander Gardiner of Claremont New Hampshire: “…The list of prisoners taken has not yet been received from the South and until it is obtained no complete rolls authoritative exist in the Department. When it is received those unaccounted for will be presumed to be dead. You can send the claim however accompanied by the best evidence of his Straw’s death procurable say the affidavit of John Rice properly authenticated and we think we can get the claim through.†The letter is in fine condition. It appears that the recipient of the letter Alexander Gardiner was killed a few months later at Winchester. The condition is very fine with the usual mailing folds. unknown books

Fine content A.L.S. 4to. 2 pages Appleton WI January 27 1863 providing news of troop movements and the firing and replacement of several Generals in part: ".I suppose Rosecrans Army is at Murfreesboro yet. You see they cashiered and dismissed Porter. They ought to do the same with Buell or shoot him. When such traitors are out of the Army we shall do better. I believe Rosecrans to be a true good officer. I understand he has dismissed a many good officers and I hope he will continue to do so until the last sympathizers are out of the Army. It is reported that Burnside has resigned and Hooker has taken his place. Hooker is not ably as good an officer as Burnside but it seems bad to be changing Commanders so much. Matters do not look encouraging yet I believe we shall succeed by and by." Condition: weak folds with minor fraying at the top margin that affects parts of two letters. In reply I have to state that the said James Wright is now in the Government Service at last accounts was at Duvall's Bluff Arkansas. I will write at once to him but it is very doubtful if my letter reaches him as the mail to that place is very irregular. If it does not reach him he will give immediate attention to the subject when he returns in February - which is I think the best that can be done under the circumstances." Collection of Fifty-Two Manuscript Newark City Council Resolutions on the Civil War
52 folded and docketed uniform manuscript resolutions mostly 4to typically written on one side and docketed on the back includes a contemporary cover sheet that originally held resolutions together two small pictures of Lincoln and Grant included housed in modern photo album. A few with folds at the top and minor chips normal aging and browning; overall in very good condition. These resolutions were passed by the Public Aid Committee which was created by the Newark City Council at the beginning of the Civil War to advance money to soldiers' families. These resolutions would then be given to a clerk for filing. This clerk seems to have had strong anti war or Copperhead sympathies and gradually began editorializing as he wrote out the docketing on the back of each folded document. He titled the 31 March 1862 resolution "For aid to families. in the war to abolish slavery." On 2 September it was "the war for the ruin of the country." On 26 November it became "the Negro War" and 2 December it says "the Army of Abm. Lincoln to subjugate the Southern States." This obscure city clerk took things a step further after the Emancipation Proclamation. On 4 February 1863 he titled a resolution "In aid of families of volunteers. in the Nigger War!" He must have been spoken to after this remark because he drifts into sarcasm rather than outright racism. In a later resolution he states "for the benefit of our coloured fellow citizens of African decent." However by 14 September 1863 he was back to his old tricks again referring to "Lincoln's nigger war." He continued his editorializing through June 1864. These docketed resolutons were found in the included wrapper on which a a Union soldier later wrote: "The name if it can be found out of the miserable traitor who booked the within resolutions should go down in posterity as one who should receive the contempt of loyal men." The name of that Union soldier appears to be Major W. W. Morris. books

New York: Elias Dexter; one by L. Prang 1863. Forty-eight handsome portrait engravings of important Civil War figures including Lincoln and Cabinet members Union Army and Navy leaders Jefferson Davis and others. Each mounted within a decorative stiff card frame with gilt border. Portraits are clear and clean most with an identifying slip the slips are loose and not pasted to the engravings only one or two with some light wear to picture. They are preceded by a decorative title page. Bound in original cloth "Album" stamped in gilt on the spine. Spine cloth chipped at head and foot slightly shaken but covers firm. The portraits are not glued in but rather placed into the frame from the bottom and the bottom then sealed. The cards have the name of the subject below the portrait and the imprint at the bottom and are in Near Fine to Fine condition.<br/><br/> The portrait of Lincoln is based on a popular photograph taken by Mathew Brady on or around May 16 1861. The remaining portraits include: Seward Stanton Chase Welles Winfield Scott Wool Commodore Davis Foote Wilkes Porter Farragut Stringham Com. Dupont Lieut. Worden McClellan Halleck Dix Gen. Grant Gen. The Confederacy wanted Britain's recognition as a separate and independent country. Britain which relied heavily on Southern cotton naturally favored the Confederacy secretly helping to arm warships but was reluctant to grant official recognition. James Mason was selected as the Confederate representative to England and his mission was clear. These documents reflect his attempts to secure recognition for the Confederacy as well as other concerns. <br> <br> NORTH AMERICA. No. 2. 1863. CORRESPONDENCE WITH MR. MASON RESPECTING THE BLOCKADE AND RECOGNITION OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES. Contains much information on ships entered and cleared at blockaded ports as well as a letter subtly asking the British government to please continue trade despite the blockade. Also has copies of correspondence between Mason and Earl Russell in which Mason openly tries to convince Russell to recognize the Confederacy Russell seems unreceptive refusing personal interviews and writing terse responses. <br> <br> NORTH AMERICA. No. 14. 1864. CORRESPONDENCE WITH MR. MASON COMMISSIONER OF THE SO-STYLED CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA. Correspondence about various matters: sinking of a steamer in British waters removal of British consuls etc. An extract from the Richmond Whig shows the frustration felt by the Confederacy: "to be sure we know that we have no national existence outside of our own fond imaginations and that in the eyes of Great Britain we are still part and parcel of the United States and destined for all she cares to remain so forever." An interesting British document reprinting communications between the Secretary of the Admiralty Mr. Hammond and members of Parliament on what to do regarding the Confederate prize-vessel Tuscaloosa originally the American vessel Conrad while docked at the Cape of Good Hope. Ultimately the Duke of Newcastle instructed the Governor of the Cape to restore the Tuscaloosa to the Confederate lieutenant who last commanded her. A controversial decision considering the British government's failure to officially recognize the Confederate States of America. An intriguing example of British sympathy for the Confederate cause. unknown books

A vivid Civil War broadside showing the immediacy of the news from the front as well as how garbled or false information was disseminated. The headlines further trumpet: "It is occupied by the 144th Pa. Vols. - The 'Old Flag' that Anderson was compelled to lower floating on the ruins! - Glorious news from Gens. Meade and Butler! - Contemplated movement on Richmond." Despite resumption of a terrific bombardment of Fort Sumter on October 26 the fort did not fall to Federal forces. Thousands of rounds were dropped on the fort but it stayed in Confederate hands another sixteen months until evacuated on February 13 1865. It certainly was not occupied by the 144th Pennsylvania Volunteers and Major Anderson's "Old Flag" did not fly over the fort until two hours before the death of Abraham Lincoln on April 15 1865. The whole second column of text concerns events in the Western Theater Georgia Tennessee and Alabama and the progress of the Army of the Potomac in Virginia: <br> <br> ".General Meade was on the march for the city of Richmond under circumstances which rendered it almost certain that he would capture it. The report of the evacuation of Richmond.is of course all bosh.The details of the great movement now being executed I am not allowed to telegraph you.the objective point of the combined command is the city of Richmond." unknown books

Wilmington N.C. 1862. Broadside 15 1/4 x 11 inches printed in three columns. Moderate toning and foxing. Four-inch closed vertical tear at bottom edge no loss of paper. Very good. A Confederate newspaper extra reporting the failure of the Union's initial Peninsular campaign around Independence Day in 1862. From March to around the time of this newspaper extra General George McClellan launched an offensive campaign against northern Virginia which was intended to capture the Confederate capital of Richmond. Facing a series of crafty Confederate generals including John B. Magruder Joseph E. Johnston J.E.B. Stuart Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee McClellan's tactics proved fruitless in capturing Richmond and he was eventually recalled by President Lincoln to prepare for the Second Battle of Bull Run the next month. This newspaper extra issued by the Wilmington North Carolina DAILY JOURNAL reports the "Yankees in Full Retreat" after receiving news from "a couple of free negroes" that McClellan's forces were headed north. There are also reports of deserters from McClellan's army being captured detailed passages on the path of the Union army's retreat and reports on the movements of other military units. In addition the text relates news on Confederate attempts to gain "early recognition of the Southern Confederacy" from European powers noting that Confederate diplomat John Slidell had "indicated the immediate prospect of recognition by the French Government." There are also passages covering Confederate wounded captured Union soldiers from the 7th Indiana the Confederate government's support "in comfortable quarters of some eleven hundred lazy runaway negroes" and more much of which is reported from other sources. No copies of this extra reported in OCLC. A rare Confederate newspaper extra recording mostly positive results for the Confederacy during a particularly good summer for the southern cause. unknown books

Lewis issues a warning to the citizens of Winchester Virginia imploring them to submit to his occupation or face <i>"harsh measures."</i> This was the first official occupation of a town that would change hands nearly seventy times during the war. Union General Nathaniel Banks entered the Shenandoah Valley in March 1862 occupied Winchester on March 12 and defeated the Confederates at the battle of Kernstown on March 23. On May 25 Union forces were defeated by Stonewall Jackson at the first battle of Winchester and forced to withdraw from the town towards Harper's Ferry thus ending the first Federal occupation of Winchester.</p><p><b>Condition</b></p><p>Very good</p>

Partly printed documents completed in manuscript varying sizes measuring in the range of 7-7.5" x 9-9.75". Matted and mounted behind glass in a 17" x 34" gilt decorative frame. Very Good.<br/><br/> Former Confederates were required to sign oaths of loyalty before regaining citizenship and voting rights. The language of these three oaths differs slightly but each requires the signer to "defend the Constitution of the United States" particularly in reference to the emancipation of slaves.<br/> Davis's oath taken in the District of Columbia is printed at page 105 of Stanley Turkel's book "Heroes of the American Reconstruction" 2005. Davis's background and State of residence are not disclosed. Arthur McMurtry was a corporal in the 26th Texas Cavalry. He is listed in the 1870 Federal Census and two later Galveston directories 1888-1891 as a bookkeeper. Cousinard was mayor of East Baton Rouge from 1857-1859. He enlisted with Company B of the 9th Battalion Louisiana Infantry in 1862. After signing his amnesty oath he became sheriff of East Baton Rouge on May 11 1864.<br/> Arthur McMurtry is distantly related to Pulitzer Prize winner Larry McMurtry: his great-grandfather John McMurtry 1748-1790 was the brother of Larry McMurtry's great-great-great-great-grandfather Samuel McMurtry 1744-1796. Lineage determined using several family trees on Ancestry web site and cross-referencing with Federal Censuses death records and information found on the Texas State Cemetery website. unknown books
