Henry Chappell (1874-1937), the 'Bath Railway Poet' [Daily Express, London; First World War poetry]:
Bath Railway Poet; First World War postcard poem by the 'Bath Railway Poet' Henry Chappell. The Day. 'You boasted the Day and you toasted the Day And now the Day has come.'
London: "Daily Express". Undated 1914. 'Reprinted from the London "Daily Express" Copyright.'. Chappell gained a degree of fame with the publication of this poem in the Daily Express of 22 August 1914. The poem is addressed to the German people and concerns the supposed toast among German army officers in the lead-up to the First World War 'Der Tag' i.e. 'the day' on which the war with England would commence. The poem is printed in portrait alignment on one side of a 14 x 8.5 cm postcard within red and blue ink borders giving a 'red white and blue' effect. Beneath the title in square brackets is the following: 'The author of this magnificent poem is Mr. Henry Chappell a railway porter at Bath. Mr. Chappell is known to his comrades as the "Bath Railway Poet." A poem such as this lifts him to the rank of a national poet.' Printed text on the reverse includes: 'FOR INLAND POSTAGE ONLY' and 'LONDON "DAILY EXPRESS."' In good condition on lightly-aged card with minor repairs to one corner on reverse and a small closed tear to one edge. Thirty-six lines in six stanzas with the first reading: 'You boasted the Day and you toasted the Day And now the Day has come. Blasphemer braggart and coward all Little you reck of the numbing ball The blasting shell or the "white arm's" fall As they speed poor humans home.' An attractive piece of First World War ephemera and propaganda. No other copy of this postcard has been traced. London: "Daily Express". Undated [1914]. 'Reprinted from the London "Daily Express" (Copyright).' unknown

Henry George Grey, 3rd Earl Grey (1802 – 1894), statesman, sometime Under-Secretary of State for War and the Colonies and later
3rd Earl Grey; Guiana Substantial Autograph Letter Signed "Grey" to Thomas Baring who has requested advice on the latter's eventual petition 3 July 1857 of the immigration of free labour as opposed to slaves as in the USA into Guiana.
Howick 25 June 1857. Six pages 12mo good condition. He finds it difficult to give advice because of his "being so imperfectly informed as to the present state of the question of immigration into Guiana. - It is obvious that the course which ought to be taken must depend upon whether the Colonists have or have not reason to complain of the conduct of the Government.- If they have & if any facilities for obtaining labour which might be granted to them have been with-held then a discussion would seem to be desirable & in the present word obscured of the session & if parties in the House of Commons I do not see how you could ruin a discussion except by asking a question & making a statement in explanation of it going into Committee of Supply. But if the Govt as I think it most likely sincerely desire to do all that can properly be done to encourage immigartion & only refuse to consent to measures to which there is a just objectn it would seem to me doubtful whether there would be any advantage in bringing on a discussion or whether it would be quite right to do so. - For this reason if I had remained in town & had had words deleted to present the petition to the House of Lords I would in the first instance have called upon the gentlemen connected with the colony in this country for a clear explanation of what they want & of the grounds on which they think the government ought to do more for them & I w-ould have endeavoured to satisfy myself whether they are right or wrong in order that in presenting the petition I might express the opinion I had formed which you know is allowed in the House of Lords. .". HENRY GIFFORD
TOLSTOJ

These efforts stimulated economic growth and improved living standards.
While the Edict of Nantes brought religious peace to France some hardline Catholics and Huguenots remained dissatisfied leading to occasional outbreaks of violence and conspiracies. Henry IV also faced resistance from certain noble factions who opposed his centralization policies leading to political instability.
His main foreign policy success was the Peace of Vervins in 1598 which made peace in the long-running conflict with Spain. HEPPNER, Max Amichai
IK WOON IN EEN KIPPENHOK
Paperback, 103pp. ISBN 9789061006213. Nieuw.

Herbst Imre; Trosztler Alfréd
AKIK MEGHALTAK ÉS AKIK HARCOLTAK NÉPÜNK BECSÜLETÉÉRT
1st edition. Original Paper Wrappers, 8vo 32 pages. In Hungarian. Title translates as, Those who Died and Fought for the Honor of our People. Heavily illustrated catalog of an exhibit in Budapest, 1946, to illustrate the persecution of the Hungarian Jews during World War II. Printed entirely on glossy paper, this catalog includes 55 photos, facsimiles, and other images from the exhibition, primarily anti-Nazi Hungarian Jewish artwork and posters, but also anti-Semitic posters, death cam photos, and scenes of new life in Palestine. The picture material was collected by the Jewish Agency for Palestine Documentation Department in January 1946 (translated from page 2) . The Foreword notes (translated) that The first anniversary of the liberation of the Budapest ghetto has arrived. It is time to bring to the world the terrible documents of the tragedy of Judaism and put the still unbelievers who turn their heads into thinking; those who do not believe because they do not want to believe. But not only the persuasion of the doubters is the goal of this attempt, but also of recalling over and over again for those who forget quickly. This is the purpose of this sad picture book, with all the cries, complaints and death blows coming from all sides. These pictures are just dull shadows of reality. Subjects: Jews--Persecutions--Hungary--History--20th century. Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) --Hungary--Exhibitions. OCLC: 1022126577. OCLC lists just one copy anywhere (NLI) . Light wear to wrappers, old dampstains to margins, but no images or text affected. Very Rare and important. (HOLO2-139-13U)
