"YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU!" was the poster slogan that shouted out to the people of Britain during the First World War.As men of all ages responded to the call by joining the forces and leaving their homes and jobsso those left behind were forced to step up and take their place.Food shortagesrationingthe first 'Blitz' and the appearance of women in the workplace all became familiar.Drawing on the archives of Imperial War Museumsauthor Terry Charman presents a lively and evocative portrait of life on the Home Front in the first World War.Filled with absorbing first-hand accounts newly researched from diariesletters and newspaper reportshis book reveals in vivid and immensely personal detail how life changed in Britain between 1914 and 1918. From the draconian effects of DORA Defence of the Realm Act and the threat of Zeppelin raidsto government propaganda and the power of the press 'The First World War on the Home Front' recalls how the people of Britain not only confronted the direct threats to their country but also prepared for the fact that life would never be the same again. Inscription on front end paper. No other marks. A very clean tight copy with bright unmarked boards and no bumping to corners. Dust jacket not price clipped or marked or torn with light creasing to upper and lower edges. 427pp. This controversial study, based upon extensive work in American as well as British archives, ruthlessly strips away the myth of the 'special relationship' between Britain and the USA to reveal the unsentimental reality.
