Two stereoviews depicting African American soldiers military vessels and infrastructure during the Civil War. Part of the "The War for the Union" serires published by E. & H. T. Anthony & Co. New York. Undated but other stereoview images in series date from 1865. Each measure approximately 7" x 3.25". Each is mounted on yellow cardstock with the publisher’s imprint and the series title “The War for the Union.†Paper captions are applied to the recto while the verso features additional printed descriptions.

1 "Dutch Gap Canal and Group of Soldiers. Taken after the bank was blown out. On the extreme end of a portion of the bank remains which forms a profile which the soldiers call Jeff Davis."
This stereoview captures a group of Union soldiers standing on a bluff overlooking the Dutch Gap Canal in Virginia a crucial engineering project undertaken during the Civil War. Notably one soldier in the group positioned closer to the water and holding a mooring line is an African American serviceman. Given the racial composition of Union forces at this time he may have been a member of the United States Colored Troops USCT which were increasingly involved in engineering projects and manual labor details under Union General Benjamin Butler's command or a contraband in the employ of a regular Union army unit. The canal ordered by Butler in 1864 was an ambitious effort to bypass a heavily fortified Confederate position along the James River. The image shows soldiers in military attire many appearing to be officers observing the landscape where the bank had recently been blown out by explosives. One soldier distinctively positioned in the foreground with a walking stick or surveying instrument gazes toward the newly formed passage. The description references a natural formation in the remaining bank resembling Confederate President Jefferson Davis an amusing yet ironic detail considering the canal was constructed to aid the Union war effort against the Confederacy. The Dutch Gap Canal ultimately remained incomplete during the war though it was later finished in peacetime and became a permanent navigation route.

2 "Gun boats Undela and Maume James River Va."
This stereoview presents a striking image of two Union gunboats the USS Undela and the USS Maume anchored along the James River. An African American soldier or sailor stands in the foreground beneath a bare tree observing the vessels. He may have been a member of the USCT or possibly a naval rating as Black sailors made up a significant portion of Union naval crews during the war. The James River was a major theater of naval warfare during the Civil War with Union forces using ironclads and gunboats to control strategic waterways and support land campaigns. The Maumee was a wooden steam-powered gunboat commissioned in 1864 playing a role in the Union's blockade efforts and river patrols. The presence of these vessels underscores the importance of naval power in securing Union supply lines and enforcing control over Confederate-held territories. The soldier’s posture suggests vigilance emphasizing the ever-present tension of wartime operations along the river.

Both stereoviews provide rare photographic documentation of key Union military operations in Virginia during the latter years of the Civil War. They capture the intersection of military engineering naval power and the daily lives of soldiers making them invaluable visual records of the conflict. Each stereoview exhibits toning and some splotching/discoloration with light wear and soiling to the mounts. Despite these signs of age the details of the photographs remain clear and are in very good condition overall. An exceptional pair of wartime stereoviews illustrating both the ingenuity and strategic importance of Union military efforts in Virginia. unknown
