Les Français de Grande-Bretagne Franco-British Liaison Committee Grand Buildings Trafalgar Square London. 4 November 1941. On both sides of a 7.5 x 12 cm card with curved corners. A frail survival heavily aged and worn. The text on the recto is printed in black with the organisation's logo to the left in blue and red. The recto also has a large red 'S' superimposed at centre and carries the two signatures that of Guérille certifying that Guillet has been 'enrolled as a Sympathiser-Member'. Printed on the reverse are the 'Aims of the Association': 'To continue the war at the side of the British Government and of our Allies. To co-operate with General de Gaulle's Free French Forces. To unite all French people. To consolidate the Entente Cordiale. The Association is the only recognised body of loyal French civilians who have pledged themselves to the British Government and General de Gaulle.' Considering the claims made on the reverse of the card it is curious that little information is availaible concerning it. Perhaps it was a movement inspired by De Gaulle's speech at the Albert Hall in March 1941 "Discours prononce par le general de Gaulle a la reunion des Francais de Grande-Bretagne a Londres le 1er mars 1941". Scarce: no copy at the Imperial War Museum and the only other copy traced at the National Library of Scotland. Approximate translation of handwritten inscription on second leaf indicates this copy was presented to Georges Soulier, officer des Chars d'Assaut 505e regiment A.S. under order of the American Army, 5th Division, 79e Division, 90th Division. On the same page an additional inscription signed by Nouliel (?) in 1928 appears to read "a mon bon ami Carlton B. Overton en Souvenir de la guerre 1914-1918." Profusely illustrated with black and white photos of French tank action in WWI. Includes photos of those killed in action and chronology of action on the French Front. Pencil underlining on one page. Covers and pages embrittled with age, with resultant chipping. Covers and dedication page almost loose. A rare surviving copy of this important history. Book

Peter Lesley the State Geologist of Pennsylvania and President of the American Institute for the Advancement of Science. Susan was the daughter of Judge Joseph Lyman of Northampton. The first printing of this memoir was limited to only 100 copies and titled MEMOIRS OF MRS. ANNE J. LYMAN in 1876. This edition was re-titled RECOLLECTIONS OF MY MOTHER: it omits some letters from the first edition but includes anecdotes and letters new to this edition. These are extensive New England memoirs concentrated on Northampton Mass. The Illustrations include an actual mounted photograph of a painted portrait of Judge Lyman. La guerra in Africa Orientale 1914-1918. Le memorie di un generale tedesco imbattuto al comando di soldati africani
ill., br. L'Africa Orientale Tedesca fu lo scenario di uno dei più interessanti quanto meno conosciuti capitoli della Grande Guerra. Protagonista indiscusso di questo scacchiere fu Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck, comandante in capo delle forze armate tedesche nella regione, un uomo di eccezionali capacità militari e detentore di un significativo primato nella Prima Guerra Mondiale: fu l'unico comandante a non aver subito sconfitte di rilievo durante tutto il corso della guerra. In questo stupendo diario di guerra, v. Lettow racconta le vicende salienti del suo indiscutibile successo. 300 tedeschi e 14.000 ascari, per l'intera guerra del '14-18, seppero mettere in scacco le ben più numerose forze inglesi, comandate da 137 generali e composte da 300.000 uomini. Von Lettow può essere considerato uno degli inventori della guerrilla, e al pari del più celebre Lawrence d'Arabia comprese l'importanza di mobilitare la popolazione indigena in funzione anti-imperiale (in questo caso contro lo stesso Impero britannico). Egli dimostrò come i soldati africani potevano battersi alla pari e costrinse gli stessi nemici ad armare altri indigeni (non motivati così bene) per rispondere adeguatamente alla minaccia tedesca. Questo significò molto per l'orgoglio della gente africana: e aiutò più di quanto si possa pensare la nascita dei movimenti di indipendenza.
