The alphabet reform which came into effect in Turkey on November 1st, 1928, made reading and writing in Turkish easier compared to the system based on the Arabic script, and it also constituted the new face of Early Republic modernization, which defined its political rhetoric through a break from its Ottoman past. The National Schools (Millet Mektepleri) played a vital role in the campaign for teaching reading and writing with the new alphabet, while the press regime structured in 1934 under the direction of the General Directorate of the Press (Matbuat Umum Müdürlügü) played a key role in the formation of a culture of national press in the country. Just like its counterparts pursued in the 1930s in Europe, in the United States, and in the Soviet Union, the press regime that was in effect in Turkey during the Early Republic period was an efficient cultural management policy, because it utilized centralized policies to shape official and private publishing that was under the control of political powers and because it got masses to adopt the ideology of modernization through publishing that reached rural areas. In the 1930s, the common goal of the press regimes of socialist, fascist, or liberal government systems, which played an active role in mass communication and education policies was the transformation of the official ideology of modernization into social culture.

Edited by Mehtap Türkyilmaz, A. Beril Kirci. "Irony and Tension" explores Turkish perceptions of the Second World War, and their different inflections in Istanbul and Ankara, with the visual guidance of the propaganda materials of the era. It examines how the Single Party Regime directed the masses during the war through many different types of effective and eclectic visual propaganda images by the use of military albums, official bulletins, community centre publications, postage stamps, popular culture, and caricature magazines, all designed, printed and distributed within the country. This publication does not intend to re-run the war for the reader through familiar images of the destruction, genocide, and fighting at the front during the Second World War. Rather than the war itself, it focuses on how the war was perceived in Turkey, a country that never entered the war. The war, sweeping the globe outside Turkey's borders was viewed by those inside the country at times with caution, and at times with worry and tension; this publication seeks to analyse the official statements, social psychology and political change encouraged by these perspectives. "Irony and Tension" first looks at the relationship between the policy of active neutrality in Ankara and the war psychology experienced in Istanbul, initially closely linked, which later went through a process of unravelling. In the conclusion section, it aims to introduce the reader, the images and visual representations reflected in the discourse of a "New Turkey", liberated from war paranoia looking confidently towards the future, which was used by the Democratic Party in its successful 1950 election campaign.

St-Vith was het belangrijkste objectief van de Duitsers toen ze op 16 december 1944 door de verdedigingslinies braken van de 106e Infanteriedivisie die zich had ingegraven langs de Schnee-Eifel. St-Vith, een knooppunt van een spoorweg en vijf belangrijke wegen, was een belangrijk doelwit in de Duitse aanvalsplanning. De bevelen luidden dat het op de eerste dag van de slag moest worden ingenomen. Indien dat doel ooit zou zijn verwezenlijkt, had niets hen kunnen verhinderen om op te rukken naar de Maas. De Duitsers konden St-Vith slechts vele dagen nadien innemen. Door de koppige weerstand van de 106e Infanteriedivisie werden te veel tijd en te veel middelen verspild. Deze gids wil de mogelijkheid bieden om dit specifieke gedeelte van het front te verkennen en op zoek te gaan naar die befaamde punten in het landschap waarom zowel Amerikanen als Duitsers zo hard vochten en waar de ongelukkige 106e Divisie ten onder zou gaan in de slachting van die verschrikkelijke winter van 1944. De geïnformeerde lezer kan hier nog komen kijken naar de schuttersputjes waarin de GI?s vochten, naar de Duitse Schootsposities of naar de plaats waar duizenden Amerikanen zich overgaven. Al deze plekjes zijn in een halve eeuw tijd nauwelijks veranderd.
