Enrico Cocchia: Insigne latinista, insegnò Letteratura Latina all'Università di Napoli, della quale fu anche Rettore. Fu Direttore dell'Istituto L'Orientale di Napoli dal 1900 al 1914. Membro del Consiglio Superiore della Pubblica Istruzione, Socio dell'Accademia delle Scienze di Napoli, Socio dell'accademia di Archeologia, dell' Accademia delle Scienze e Arti di Padova. Il 24 novembre 1913 fu nominato Senatore del Regno. Intorno al 1930, in occasione del bi millenario delle Celebrazioni Virgiliane, fu il promotore e l'artefice della sistemazione del Parco Virgiliano di Napoli, complesso monumentale di grande interesse archeologico e storico, a lungo proprietà privata, poi acquisita dallo Stato. Nel 1900, quale rappresentante della Reale Accademia di Archeologia e Lettere di Napoli, fece parte nel 1900 della commissione che presenziò alla riesumazione della salma di Giacomo Leopardi a Napoli, insieme al senatore Filippo Mariotti, in rappresentanza del governo e del professor Francesco Moroncini, in rappresentanza della famiglia Leopardi. Fra le sue numerose pubblicazioni va ricordata soprattutto La tomba di Virgilio in cui raccolse le prove a testimonianza dell' attendibilità dell' esatta ubicazione del sepolcro del poeta.

L'addestramento feroce, le punizioni e le violenze gli fanno rimpiangere ogni giorno la scelta compiuta, ma tornare indietro è impossibile. Nell'ottobre di quello stesso anno Antonio viene spedito in prima linea a difendere una causa che non gli appartiene nella guerra d'Indocina. Partecipa alla lunghissima e decisiva battaglia di Dien Bien Phu, in Vietnam, che porta alla resa dei francesi.

Circa 1920s. 1920s. Good. - Three closing lines of a letter are penned on an approximately 2-5/8 inch high by 5-1/2 inch wide slip of gray paper. Signed "W. H. Cocke". The top & bottom edges of the paper are unevenly cut & there is a horizontal crease above the signature where the letter was folded. There is a small light stain or smudge to the "H" of the signature. Small strips of tape adhere to the sides of the verso. Good. <p>Brigadier General William Horner Cocke 1874-1938 graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1894. He taught at Kemper Military Academy Missouri earned a law degree and practiced law in St. Louis from 1899 to 1907. He served as a U. S. Army officer in both the Spanish-American War and World War I. In 1924 he was named the fourth Superintendent of Virginia Military Institute remaining in that post until 1929 when ill health forced him to retire. Circa [1920s]. unknown

A proposito degli avvenimenti dell'Otto Settembre 1943, Piero Chiara scrisse: «Fuga, esodo o diaspora, così venne chiamato il fenomeno, a seconda dei gusti, che ebbe i suoi varchi più praticati nel tratto di confine tra il Lago Maggiore e il Lago di Como, con una punta di preferenza tra le colline che da Viggiù digradano al Mendrisiotto e in particolare il valico doganale di Gaggiolo... Per tutto il mese di settembre continuò, a ritmi alterni, l'afflusso dei militari e dei civili, con la media di un civile ogni tre militari». Su questa complessa vicenda, su cui si innestarono ben presto, nel bene e nel male, centinaia di storie di disertori, dispersi, renitenti di leva, ebrei, antifascisti, soldati della Repubblica di Salò, partigiani della Repubblica dell'Ossola, calò nel dopoguerra un pesante silenzio.Questo studio, assieme al suo ricco e originale corredo fotografico, interessa il valico di Gaggiolo e la comunità di Stabio che in quei giorni si trovò in prima linea e diede una grande prova di solidarietà e di abnegazione, assieme ai reparti di guardie doganali e di militari che operavano su quel delicato settore di confine.
