Col Charles Booth Brackenbury, RA [C B Brackenbury] (1831-1890), military historian and British Army officer in Crimea, and war
Col. Charles Booth Brackenbury R.A. military historian and Times correspondent. Autograph Letter Signed to his editor J. T. Delane on writing and reviewing after the Franco-Prussian war with claim to have ‘started the Intelligence Department’.
10 April 1874; from Hill Street Woolwich on letterhead of Hill House Woolwich S.E. An excellent letter casting light on the relationship between the editor of The Times and a senior correspondent. See the two men’s entries in the Oxford DNB. Brackenbury’s states that ‘During the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 Brackenbury was the Times correspondent with the Austrian army and was at the battle of Königgrätz Sadowa — riding with Benedek under fire at Chlum — and reported the naval battle of Lissa. He was the Times correspondent in the Franco-Prussian War accompanying Prince Frederick Charles in the Le Mans campaign; and in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877 when he crossed the Balkans with Count Gourko.’ 4pp 12mo. Bifolium. In very good condition folded twice. Thin strip from windowpane mount adhering to edges in not unpleasing way. Signed ‘C. B. Brackenbury’ and addressed to ‘My dear Delane’. The letter begins: ‘Captain Clarke brought me today the last number of his translation of the German War of 1870-71. He is sending you a copy and I hope you will find some one to review it in my place.’ Brackenbury has himself translated ‘the Report of the Committee on French Army re organization together with the law as proposed and passed’ which the War Office is publishing. ‘You shall have the first copy issued which I will mark myself.’ In his opinion a great deal of the report ‘bears upon much more than French re-organization’. He will be very glad if Delane finds it ‘worth a notice’. He continues: ‘Though I may not write more on military affairs I don’t see why I should not review other books if you can find any for me. Even if you have no space for them at present the reviews might stand over till the interest of the new parliament is over.’ It seems to him ‘unnatural to have no work in hand for you’. The postscript reads: ‘They say that my review of Clarke’s first number started the Intelligence Department.’ 10 April 1874; from Hill Street [Woolwich], on letterhead of Hill House, Woolwich, S.E. unknown

In-16° grande, pp. 246, (2), brossura editoriale. Dedica autografa del Colajanni al frontespizio: "All'illustre sig. Bennell Bodd devoto omaggio dell'Autore".

Cold War German Propaganda
Communist Disinformation Campaign: Archive of Cold War-era East German propaganda magazines specifically made for readers in the West German Army
EAST GERMANY. Die Kaserne. Bonn: Verlag „Ganz offene Worte" 1957-1963. 26 issues of an East German propaganda magazine. 1957 Heft 3; 1958 Heft 1-5; 1960 Heft 7; 1961 Heft 4-10 12; 1962 Heft 1-7 9-11; 1963 Heft 2. 7 ½ x 5 ½ in. Three smaller format. Staplebound. All have color covers and illustrations throughout. "Die Kaserne" was an East German magazine targeted specifically for young men in the West German military; the main object of the magazine was a disinformation campaign aimed at creating distrust of the West.

Kaserne English translation Barracks was created with the goal of creating dissent within the West German military by targeting conscripts. Some articles explicitly question the validity of required military conscription service which the West instituted in 1956; while others expose Nazi histories of West German leaders such as ambassadors; and many issues have strong criticisms for BRD politicians one even calls Willy Brandt who later became Chancellor of West Germany an American boot-licker Stiefelputzer. Most of the content was not overtly controversial and sought to establish common ground with low-ranking drafted soldiers. The issues are filled with jokes about military life and references to shared German culture i.e. Goethe They also feature notable East Germans such as cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin and include stories about the high quality of life for workers women and families. Appealing to their target audience of young men over a dozen of the issues feature models or pinup girls on the covers.

Rather than try to explicitly convert soldier to full East German ideology the objective of these magazines was to create loyal readers who would disrupt overall West German military strategy. In the ideal situation this would be the first step in converting these Bundeswehr soldiers to East German political ideology and possibly becoming a Communist spy.
Pristine information cards in several issues encourage readers to subscribe to the free publication and to share copies with their fellow West German soldiers. Light reading wear. All in very good condition. unknown books

Cold War Anti-Submarine Warfare
Cold War American Anti-Submarine Warfare: P-3 Orion Crash Archive from the U.S. Naval Base at Rota Spain
1985. An American submarine-hunting aircraft wreck off the runway at the U.S. naval base in Rota Spain documented in the hours after a crash landing during the height of the Cold War. The United States built this base under a 1953 deal with Spanish dictator Francisco Franco who traded the use of Spanish soil for American military aid and an end to the diplomatic isolation Spain had endured after World War II. For the next four decades Rota was the main American naval foothold in southern Europe and the planes flying out of it spent their days hunting Soviet submarines slipping in and out of the Mediterranean through the Strait of Gibraltar.
Photo archive of six Large silver gelatin photographs 8 x 10 inches with one duplicate. The downed aircraft is a P-3 Orion the four-engine turboprop that served as the Navy's primary submarine hunter throughout the Cold War. An overhead aerial view shows the plane sitting in a foam-soaked earthen apron beside the runway skid trails cut through the soil fire trucks and crash vehicles staged nearby. Ground-level images capture the nose section marked "81" squadron insignia including a tiger emblem and a five-star command crest and stenciled instructions reading "rescue" and "attach jack pad mooring fitting here." Crash crew in silver fire-proximity suits run hoses along the fuselage. The hand-drawn diagrams trace the aircraft's path across the Rio Salado a wheat field and farm roads outside the base perimeter marking where the "plane hits field and bounces off" and where it "digs in and breaks up" with debris scattered across an 850 by 310 yard field roughly 3150 yards past the end of the runway.
The P-3 Orion entered service in 1962 and flew Cold War patrols out of Rota tracking Soviet submarines that posed a nuclear threat to American carrier groups and European coastlines. Photographs and site diagrams like these were produced for Navy mishap investigations to determine what went wrong and prevent future accidents. Overall in very good condition printed on Kodak photographic paper with the manufacturer watermark on verso. A direct visual record of a Cold War naval aviation accident at the American base that anchored U.S. submarine warfare in southern Europe. unknown

Cold War Air Force in Texas
Cold War U.S. Air Force Transport Operations MATS 62nd Troop Carrier Wing Photo Album 1959 to 1963
1959. U.S. Air Force photo album 1959 to 1963 documents Military Air Transport Service operations and everyday service life within the 62nd Troop Carrier Wing during the early Cold War providing visual evidence of strategic airlift infrastructure aviation technology and personnel culture. The material captures the role of transport units responsible for global logistical support illustrating how troop movement supply distribution and training exercises were sustained through coordinated air operations. It further supports research into mid-20th-century military mobility and the lived experience of enlisted personnel within a non-combat but operationally essential branch of U.S. military activity.
Album containing 168 black and white silver gelatin photographs primarily measuring approximately 3.25 x 4.5 inches with several images dated May 1959 and five color photographs dated January 1960 along with six larger loose prints including four captioned press photographs documenting the Coulee Crest military exercise conducted from Larson Air Force Base. The contents emphasize aircraft and airfield environments including troop transport planes such as the Douglas C-124 Globemaster II and fighter aircraft including the F-100C Super Sabre alongside earlier bomber models still in circulation. The album cover features graphics associated with Tactical Air Command and the 62nd Troop Carrier Wing with a stamped image of a jet aircraft against a dark blue ground. In addition to aviation imagery the compiler included photographs of personal interest notably automobiles and a hot rod show as well as images taken in the Midwestern United States including western Ohio and nearby Indiana. The latter portion of the album documents travel through the American Southwest with identifiable locations including areas near Austin Texas and Luke Air Force Base in Arizona.

Produced during a period when Military Air Transport Service units supported ongoing Cold War logistics following earlier involvement in Korea and Indochina the album reflects the continued centrality of airlift capacity in U.S. military planning prior to large-scale escalation in Vietnam. The combination of official aircraft imagery press photographs and informal personal scenes situates the compiler within both institutional operations and broader postwar American culture including car enthusiasm and interstate mobility. Such material contributes to the study of Cold War military infrastructure aviation history and the social life of service members stationed within the continental United States. Light wear to album edges and corners photographs well-preserved with minor handling marks loose prints intact; overall very good. A detailed visual record of U.S. Air Force transport operations and service culture at the outset of the 1960s. unknown

Fighting the Soviet Army: Archive of U.S. Manuals on Soviet Weapons Electronic Warfare Missiles and Nuclear Battlefield Operations 1978 to 1984
1978. U.S. Army and Defense Department Soviet-threat instruction archive documenting late Cold War American intelligence on Soviet ground forces into battle-simulation tables field doctrine weapons comparisons and nuclear battlefield procedures. "Soviet Military Power" carrying Secretary of Defense Caspar W. Weinberger's printed preface shows Soviet tanks artillery helicopters SS-20 and ICBM and SLBM launchers bombers naval construction Afghanistan and technology acquisition. The technology-transfer passage offers one of the clearest Cold War intelligence arguments stating that "The communist countries are some of the National Technical Information Services' best customers" and that before the Soviet subscription was terminated in February 1980 the Soviets bought an estimated 80000 NTIS documents each year. Set beside Army manuals on Soviet organization antitank weapons SCUD-B missiles PT-76 tanks electronic warfare and nuclear battlefield doctrine the passage records an information war fought through public documents as much as espionage the same government warning of Soviet acquisition of American technical literature was producing its own unclassified guides to Soviet equipment and tactics for battle simulation officer training and operational planning.

Archive of five U.S. government publications and extracts on Soviet military organization operations tactics weapons electronic warfare technology transfer and nuclear battlefield doctrine. The group consists of staple-bound punched and wrappered government manuals and reports with organizational charts contents pages doctrinal summaries weapons tables captions printed prefaces equipment photographs and restricted-distribution or field-manual markings.

1 United States Army Combined Arms Combat Developments Activity. Afghanistan the failure of SALT II and the Reagan buildup hardened the conviction that American intelligence had undercounted Soviet strength and out of that conviction came an industry of threat assessment whose working products these are. This archive shows the American manufacturing knowledge of its enemy: Soviet organization armor and doctrine reduced to simulation tables at Fort Leavenworth codified into field manuals and repackaged as public argument under the Secretary of Defense's name. Containing many references to nuclear biological and chemical operations as routine doctrine while Soviet Military Power tallies the SS-20 ICBM and SLBM launchers aimed at the West. Working copies containing scattered annotations and highlighted portions in some. Overall in good condition. unknown

Cold War Photography
Cold War Intelligence History U.S. Army Counterintelligence Photographic Training Manuals from Fort Holabird 1960 to 1963
1960. U.S. Army Intelligence School instructional materials issued between 1960 and 1963 document the formal training of counterintelligence personnel in clandestine photography at Fort Holabird during the Cold War. Produced by the Department of Counterintelligence these documents establish photographic surveillance as a core technical discipline within military intelligence emphasizing the use of compact cameras covert image capture and field processing under restricted conditions. The archive supports research into Cold War espionage military training systems and the adaptation of commercial photographic technology for intelligence purposes.

Archive consists of nine mimeographed typescript documents totaling 111 pages each three hole punched and measuring approximately 8.5 x 11 inches with designations including "SupR" Supplemental Reading "SO" Student Outline "SIS" Student Information Sheet and "PE" Practical Exercise. Titles are as follows: 1 Description and Operation of the Leica Camera SO Jun 63; 2 Minox Camera SupR May 60; 3 Minox Camera PE Mar 62; 4 35mm Camera SO Oct 61; 5 Subminiature Film Development Supl Nov 62; 6 Subminiature Cameras SO Mar 62; 7 Photographic Strip Printing PE Mar 61; 8 Film Development by Inspection PE Jan 62; 9 Cameras Films and Developers SIS Jan 62. The documents include technical diagrams of camera models such as the Leica IIIF exposure tables film speed comparisons and procedural instructions for photographic capture and processing. Instruction emphasizes the operational value of compact cameras noting that the "Minox miniature camera is one of the most valuable items presently available in the field of intelligence photography" particularly for tasks where "larger cameras are not adaptable or available." Practical exercises required trainees to complete full exposure rolls conduct strip printing tests and photograph designated areas within training grounds.

These materials were produced during a period when photographic intelligence became central to military and intelligence operations requiring personnel to operate in environments described as "restricted or otherwise forbidden areas" where detection could result in "danger imprisonment or confiscation of camera and exposed film." The curriculum reflects a standardized and technical approach to surveillance combining theoretical instruction with applied field exercises to ensure operational readiness. The emphasis on subminiature formats concealment and independent exposure estimation demonstrates the constraints under which intelligence photography was conducted prior to digital and automated systems. Minor edge wear and light toning; documents remain clean and legible; overall very good condition. This archive provides concentrated primary documentation of U.S. Army counterintelligence training and the technical foundations of Cold War photographic surveillance. unknown
