Colonel Sir Anthony Coningham Sterling of the Highland Brigade Scottish soldier and military historian. First four pages of Autograph Letter to 'Maclean' describing his efforts to obtain a commission for Maclean's 'Young friend'.
3 South Place Knightsbridge. 1 November 1856. 4pp 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition lightly aged. Evidently incomplete: the first part only of a long letter. Begins: 'My dear Maclean I have it not in my heart to put forward an excuse for very long silence beyond an amount of employment the like of which I have never had thrown upon me before for many years.' He hopes to see him but leaves that night 'for the North on a tour of inspection'. He describes his movements: 'I go first to Keir near Dumblane sic for a couple of days from thence to Fort George where I may be detained by my duties for two days and from there back to Keir from which point I shall visit the Depôts and Depôt Battns. within reach.' After discussing possible arrangements for a visit he writes: 'I am ordered to hasten back from the North to inspect the Depot Battns. just formed in England and in Jersey before the Winter is farther advanced'. He 'took Mr. Rolston to the Horse Guards. - I found that no influence or interest could obtain the enrolment of his name on the list of Candidates for a Commission by purchase he being passed the age of 18 before he made his application. The Gentleman to whom I presented him is a very old friend of mine. As I told him how much interested I was in behalf of your Young friend he suggested that Mrs. Rolston should apply for a Commission by purchase in a Colonial Corps of which there are 5'. He lists the corps observing of the West Indies that it is a place 'in which you and I passed so many Years of our life' and 'not always unhealthy'. 'By a sacrifice of a little money an exchange could be effected without much difficulty into a Regt. of the Line'. The final page concludes: 'However your Young friend did not deem it advisable to make application for an appt. to any of these Corps'. 3 South Place, Knightsbridge. 1 November 1856. unknown

Yokohama 1947 Hobundo. A group of five colored envelopes 28 hand-colored photos in all smallest group ca 6 x 6.5 cm. of Kamakura all the rest 11.5 x 18 cm. very clean crisp & sharp imges nice delicate hand-coloring 10 black & white. These hand-colored photogaphs were collected in Japan in 1947 by an American woman in transit to Canton. T he photos are all in their original mailer-type color envelopes. The sights are: Kobe & Mt. Fuji eight photos each; Farmer life with an English caption list & Osaka six each; & Kamakura 10 each done in black & white. These photos show a Japan immediately after the end of World War II or the "Pacific War" as the Japanese called it. They are nicely executed and without flaw and show some of the famous tourist sights that were not bombed and traditional views temples scenery great photos of Mt. Fuji in various seasons a small Osaka & Kobe and the old temple and Great Buddha at Kamakura. The photo group of farmers show Japanese in traditional folk-costume planting hearvesting & thresh- ing rice one of tea-pickers. unknown

Relazione sull'avanzata della 8^ Divisione dall'Aisne alla "Hunding Stellung" (10-14 ottobre 1918).
Un fascicolo, dim. 280x192 mm circa, legatura originale con punto metallico all'angolo superiore sinistro, senza copertina; 8 carte numerate in alto; testo dattiloscritto, anonimo, senza riferimenti di data e di edizione. Si presume che il testo risalga al 1918. Interessante e rara relazione storico-militare relativa ad eventi della Grande Guerra. L'Aisne è un fiume della Francia settentrionale. La linea Hindenburg era un vasto sistema di difese e fortificazioni nel nord - est della Francia durante la prima guerra mondiale . Fu costruito dai tedeschi forze armate durante l'inverno del 1916-1917. La linea si estendeva per quasi 160 km , da Lens, vicino ad Arras (Pas-de-Calais), ad Aisne, vicino a Soissons. La “Hunding – Stellung”, preparata già dal 1914 e fortemente guarnita, aveva arrestato l’avanzata delle truppe alleate. Cond.: Buone condizioni generali, con tracce d'uso, una piega orizzontale d'archivio a metà del documento, leggere fioriture.
