The binding of the book has a little paper stuck to the cloth in this area. The book itself is sound with secure inner hinges and clean text. West Hartlepool England: B. T. Ord Ltd. Very Good. 1945. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Stapled wraps. B&W Illustrations; This is an oblong paperback book with cardstock covers and a stapled spine. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some edge wear rubbing and nicking. The covers have several creases. The text pages are clean and bright. Photographs are by F. C. Huntley and show some of the damage to Hartlepools during the air raid bombings. Included are several articles by local newspapers on the subject. "Hartlepool was a more significant target than the resort town of Scarborough. The port had extensive civilian docks and factories and was defended by three BL 6 inch Mk VII naval guns on the seafront. Two guns were at Heugh Battery and one at Lighthouse Battery. The guns were manned by 11 officers and 155 local men of the Durham Royal Garrison Artillery. The gun crews were warned at 04: 30 of the possibility of an attack and issued live ammunition. At 07: 46 they received word that large ships had been sighted and at 08: 10 a bombardment of the town began. No warning had been given to naval patrols in the area which were meant to be always on duty and the poor weather just before the raid meant that only four destroyers were on patrol while two light cruisers and a submarine which might otherwise have been out remained in Hartlepool harbour. The destroyers HMS Doon Test Waveney and HMS Moy were on patrol whenat 07: 45Doon saw three large vessels approaching which opened fire shortly after. The only weapons the destroyers had capable of damaging a large vessel were torpedoes; they were out of torpedo range and three destroyers turned away. Doon closed to 5000 yd 2.5 nmi; 4.6 km fired one torpedo which missed and retreated." from Wikipedia . B. T. Ord Ltd. paperback

Lightly foxed. **Early manuscript ownership of Chapman Biddle on first fly leaf. Chapman Biddle (1822-1880) was a member of the prominent Biddle family of Philadelphia. He served as an officer in the Union Army in the Civil War. He was Colonel of the 121st PA Regiment. The unit served at the Battle of Fredericksburg alongside the PA Reserves, losing 149 casualties in an attack on the Confederate right flank. Biddle participated in the Battle of Chancellorsville in the Third Division of I Corps. Biddle assumed command of the 1st Brigade, 3rd Division before the Battle of Gettysburg began on July 1, 1863. The assignment of Maj. Gen. John F. Reynolds as commander of the army's left wing led to acting promotion of brigade commander Brig. Gen. Thomas A. Rowley to command of the division while Maj. Gen. Abner Doubleday led the corps. Colonel Biddle led the four regiments of the brigade in the first day's fighting on McPherson's Ridge and the subsequent withdrawal to Cemetery Ridge. His report on the first day's fighting describes the brigade's fighting as taking place under heavy artillery fire. When the brigade was flanked by Confederate infantry, Biddle led an unsuccessful counterattack. Later he received a head wound from a spent Minie ball when Col. Abner Perrin's brigade attacked the brigade's fall-back position on Seminary Ridge. Biddle had his head bandaged, and then returned to his troops. Returning to his regiment on July 2, after Rowley resumed brigade command, Biddle participated in the repulse of Pickett's Charge. By the end of the battle, only 84 of 263 soldiers were left in the ranks. Biddle played no role in the court-martial of General Rowley for being drunk on the field at Gettysburg. In fact, he never referred to Rowley's role in the battle in anything he wrote during or after the war. Biddle led the 121st Pennsylvania though most of the summer and autumn of 1863, including most of the Bristoe Campaign and the Mine Run Campaign, before being discharged on December 10, 1863. His head wound, received at Gettysburg, eventually led to Biddle's departure from active service. In questo volume Guido Crainz descrive i momenti principali del passaggio cruciale dal regime fascista alla nascente democrazia italiana. Letteratura e giornalismo d'epoca, memorie e documenti d'archivio testimoniano il segno profondo lasciato dalla guerra in un paese oscillante tra speranze e paure, tra desiderio di trasformazione e bisogno di normalità. Ci trasmettono la necessità di un esame di coscienza collettivo volto a capire le ragioni del dramma alle spalle, che però si interromperà troppo presto. Ci ripropongono, infine, le condizioni concrete in cui avviene la costruzione della "democrazia dei partiti", con le sue contraddizioni e i suoi limiti.
