COULTER, E Merton
The Civil War and Readjustment in Kentucky
Chapel Hill: The University of North Carolina Press 1926. Hardcover. Small 4to. Burgundy cloth. viii 468pp. Good plus. Binding a bit rough rather edgeworn and scuffed; front inner hinge starting but expertly archivally strengthened thus strong. Tight decent first edition of what William E. Parrish called "A good account of the history and character of this key border state; embraces all facets of life there." If this copy is pleasantly worn it's because of its succession of distinguished owners: The front pastedown bears a large bold signature and inscription from the author in blue ink: "To Dr. Edward Tuthill / With my esteem and / best wishes. / EM Coulter." Tuthill was head of the Department of History at the University of Kentucky around the time this book was published and apparently was involved in a failed effort to persuade Coulter to leave the University of Georgia in Athens and come to Kentucky; he's among those thanked in this book's preface. Next is the ownership signature near the top of the front flyleaf of James F. Hopkins another noted University of Kentucky history professor editor of the papers of Henry Clay and author of such titles as "A History of the Hemp Industry in Kentucky" 1951 and "The University of Kentucky: Origins and Early Years" 1951. Lastly below this is the handsome crest bookplate of Ross A. Webb yet another noted University of Kentucky history professor and author of "Benjamin Helm Bristow: Border State Politician" 1967 and "Kentucky in the Reconstruction Era" 1979. One or more of these owners pencilled checkmarks brackets and lines in the margins of some pages though only a few words albeit a slim example from which to determine authorship-- so whether Tuthill Hopkins or Webb marked this volume is difficult to determine -- Tuthill seems most likely. An interesting association copy with an intriguing string of ownerships. NEVINS II 147. The University of North Carolina Press hardcover

The front page features the headline IT HAPPENED IN AMERICA, and under it a picture of people saluting the American and Nazi flags. That is captioned 20,000 NAZIS SALUTE SWASTIKA. Also on that page is In 1939, thousands of Bund members and their friends gathered in Madison Square Garden to sing their hymn of hate against democracy. Religious freedom, racial brotherhood, everything Americans hold dear was attacked. Our President was subjected to a stream of vilification. Hitler alone received cheers. There is a report on the Council Against Intolerance in Americas Independence Day Ceremony which took place on July 4, 1939. Air Raids On The Hartlepools
West Hartlepool England: B. T. Ord Ltd. Very Good. 1945. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Stapled wraps. B&W Illustrations; This is an oblong paperback book with cardstock covers and a stapled spine. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some edge wear rubbing and nicking. The covers have several creases. The text pages are clean and bright. Photographs are by F. C. Huntley and show some of the damage to Hartlepools during the air raid bombings. Included are several articles by local newspapers on the subject. The port had extensive civilian docks and factories and was defended by three BL 6 inch Mk VII naval guns on the seafront. Two guns were at Heugh Battery and one at Lighthouse Battery. The guns were manned by 11 officers and 155 local men of the Durham Royal Garrison Artillery. The gun crews were warned at 04: 30 of the possibility of an attack and issued live ammunition. At 07: 46 they received word that large ships had been sighted and at 08: 10 a bombardment of the town began. No warning had been given to naval patrols in the area which were meant to be always on duty and the poor weather just before the raid meant that only four destroyers were on patrol while two light cruisers and a submarine which might otherwise have been out remained in Hartlepool harbour. The destroyers HMS Doon Test Waveney and HMS Moy were on patrol whenat 07: 45Doon saw three large vessels approaching which opened fire shortly after. The only weapons the destroyers had capable of damaging a large vessel were torpedoes; they were out of torpedo range and three destroyers turned away. Doon closed to 5000 yd 2.5 nmi; 4.6 km fired one torpedo which missed and retreated." from Wikipedia . B. T. Ord Ltd. paperback
