Vintage photograph 2¼" X 3¼" tipped to heavy stock white-bordered beige bevel-edged 4" X 5" card n.p. 1900 July 15. Very good. Handsome image of this obelisk monument commemorating the 21st Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry's contribution at the Battle of Chickamauga signed boldly by photographer Tillinghast in ink in the margin at lower right. On the verso he pens bold and large: "Monument of / 21st Wis. Infantry. / Chickamauga. / paraph / Taken on the battle / field by A.R. Tillinghast / July 15 1900." Whether Tillinghast was a professional or simply a talented amateur we have not been able to ascertain but this warrants further research. Quite handsome and unusual. unknown

Forty Seven Fac-Simile Drawings by American Artists
New York: National Arts Club 1918. Hardbound. Portfolio case is worn chipped and tattered. Contents generally VG with age toning. Cardboard portfolio with ties and tipped-on facsimile of woman's head. 50 leaves inside contents 46 of 47 called for images 1 duplicate image one uncalled-for image and reproduction of written text by Pennell. "This unique collection of drawings was contributed to the "American Artist's War Emergency Fund" by forty-seven American artists to be disposed of for the benefit of this fund." Second leaf is a lithograph of a handwritten brief essay on lithography by Joseph Pennell. 37th drawing in the portfolio is also by Pennell. This copy has two copies of a contribution by Henry Walker and lacks the contribution listed for Ben Foster. There is however an unlisted contribution by G.H. 542p. Text drawings. Age stained. Small 8vo. 195 mm. Original full cloth binding embossed in blind. Spine decorated and lettered in gilt, worn on hinge. 'This volume consists wholly of articles selected from the successive numbers of the American Messenger, to the middle of its thirteenth volume. William Allen Hallock (1794-1880) was the agent for the New England Tract Society (based in Andover, MA) when it changed its name to the American Tract Society in 1823 with the intention of becoming a national organization. The New York Religious Tract Society, considering a similar goal, contacted the New England group in 1824 about a possible merger. Hallock, believing that "the great wicked city of New York" should be its home, was influential in effecting this in 1825. He went on to wear many hats, including that of editor for the American Messenger. RELIGION BOX 10
