‎THE HOLOCAUST IN HUNGARY: FIFTY YEARS LATER‎

‎Original Cloth. 8vo. 783 pages. 24 cm. First edition. In English and Hungarian. Edited by Randolph L. Braham and Attila Pók. “Outgrowth of the International Scholars' Conference held in Budapest on Apr. 2-7, 1994.The Holocaust in Hungary consist of some 30 essays that were read at an international conference in Budapest in 1994. One of the purposes of the gathering, the first such meeting in a former Warsaw Pact country, was to evaluate the lessons of the Holocaust. About half of those taking part in the conference were from Hungary. The volume's editors are Braham, the world's leading scholar of the Holocaust in Hungary, and Pok, the Deputy Director of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences' (HAS) Institute of History. … The papers in this volume are divided into four categories: 1, preliminaries; 2, studies dealing with historical, social, economic and ideological antecedents; 3, essays dealing with the introduction and/or implementation of anti-Jewish regulations before and after the occupation of Hungary by the Nazis; and 4, papers on the Holocaust's impact on Hungary's Jews as well as its aftermath. The preliminary papers appear both in Hungarian and English, while others are presented in one or the other of these languages, each accompanied by a summary of the study's contents in the other language. ” - Review by Nandor F. ‎THE HOLOCAUST IN HUNGARY: FORTY YEARS LATER‎

‎Original Cloth. 8vo. XV, 235 pages. 24 cm. First edition. Edited by Randolph L. Braham and Bela Vago. “Contributions by scholars from Hungary, Israel and the United States make this the most comprehensive and reliable volume in English on the fate of the Hungarian Jews in World War II, with background material on anti-Semitism in Hungary before the war and some attention to events since. It is an honest and objective effort, not so much to recount what happened, which is well known, but to explore the causes and to assess the responsibility of the Nazis, of Hungary's prewar and wartime governments and of Hungarian society. ” -Review in Foriegn Affairs, Summer, 1986. ‎THE POLITICS OF GENOCIDE: THE HOLOCAUST IN HUNGARY [CONDENSED EDITION]‎

‎Original Cloth. 8vo. 321 pages. 24 cm. Condensed edition. “The Politics of Genocide: The Holocaust in Hungary, Condensed Edition is an abbreviated version of this classic work first published in 1981 and revised and expanded in 1994. It includes a new historical overview, and retains and sharpens its focus on the persecution of the Jews. Through a meticulous use of Hungarian and many other sources, the book explains in a rational and empirical context the historical, political, communal, and socioeconomic factors that contributed to the unfolding of this tragedy at a time when the leaders of the world, including the national and Jewish leaders of Hungary, were already familiar with the secrets of Auschwitz. The Politics of Genocide is the most eloquent and comprehensive study ever produced of the Holocaust in Hungary. In this condensed edition, Randolph L. Braham includes the most important revisions of the 1994 second edition as well as new material published since then. ” - Publishers Description. Subjects: Jews - Persecutions - Hungary. ‎(BRIG GENERAL ARMSTRONG -- WAR OF 1812)‎

‎Brig General Armstrong 1817-1882‎

‎Hardcover. On September 26 1814 the American privateer "General Armstrong" named after Continental Congressman John Armstrong Jr. a U.S. Army general under the command of Captain Samuel C. Reid was docked at the Portuguese port of Fayal in the Azores when three British warships on their way to the Caribbean to join a flotilla for the Battle of New Orleans decided to violate international laws of neutrality and instead attack. Under the command of Robert Lloyd the British ships finally succeeded in scuttling the American brig though they suffered 65 killed and 117 wounded in the process while the Americans lost only two; the American crew escaped to land. The incident was an enormous tactical error that swung the War of 1812 in the direction of the Americans for it gave General Andrew Jackson time to reach New Orleans and prepare for the battle. It was also a public relations disaster for the British becoming a sensation in popular songs poems books and colorful prints. Collection of six pamphlets bound chronologically. Small 4to. Hand-lettered vellum spine and green paper over boards. 3pp; 24pp; 150pp; 28pp; 5pp; 25pp. Very good. Mild age toning and faint soiling to binding; first couple pamphlets rather age toned with bit of dampstaining but remainder clean handsome and tight. Pamphlets in order consist of: 1 Frederick Jenkins and Rensselaer Havens "In Senate of the United States. January 23 1817." N.p.: N.p. 1817. 2 "Memorial of Sam. C. Reid Jr. In behalf of the claimants of the brig General Armstrong praying indemnity." Washington DC: Government Printing Office 1854. 33d Congress 1st Session Mis. Doc. No. 14. 3 "In the Senate of the United States. The Court of Claims submitted the following Report. Claimants Brig General Armstrong vs. The United States." Washington DC: Government Printing Office 1858. 35th Congress 1st Session Mis. Doc. No. 142. 4 "Owners of Brig General Armstrong. Memorial of Sam. C. Reid in Behalf of the captains owners officers and crew of the late United States private armed brig General Armstrong their heirs executors administrators or assigns." Washington DC: Government Printing Office 1879. 46th Congress 1st Session Mis. Doc. No. 16. 5 "Brig General Armstrong. Report. for the relief of the captain owners officers and crew of the United States private-armed brig General Armstrong." Washington DC: Government Printing Office 1880. 46th Congress 2d Session Report No. 1014. 6 "In the Senate of the United States. Report. for the relief of the captain owners officers and crew of the late United States private-armed brig General Armstrong their heirs executors administrators agents or assigns report the said bill with an amendment and recommend its passage." Washington DC: Government Printing Office 1881. 47th Congress 1st Session Report No. 270. An interesting and unusual assemblage spanning 65 years obviously gathered by someone intensely interested in the outcome of the financial claims made afterward -- makes you wonder if it belonged to one of the "heirs executors administrators or assigns" often referred to! hardcover‎

‎(BROADSIDE BALLAD -- CIVIL WAR)‎

‎Welcome Our Gallant 69th‎

‎New York: H. De Marsan n.y. Broadside. 6¼" X 10". Very good. Numerous edge chips along right side and bit on lower edge only slightly encroaching on decorative border. This crudely printed broadside ballad undated but circa 1861 includes a thick decorative patriotic border featuring red and blue stars and stripes olive-branch clutching American Eagle etc. with publisher's data "H. De Marsan Publisher / 54 Chatham St. / N.Y." at bottom center of border. Sung to the tune of "Marshal Ney" a popular tune celebrating the Napoleonic figure this Civil War tune celebrates the 69th New York Infantry Regiment the "Fighting Irish" or "Fighting Sixty-Ninth." Two stanzas and one chorus are featured the chorus reading: "Right and left -- left and right: / We fought the Rebels with all our might; / Brave CORCORAN did wounded fall / And HAGGERTY died by a Traitor's ball." Irish-born Michael Corcoran 1827-63 led the 69th at the First Battle of Bull Run in July 1861 in which he was taken prisoner and Irish-born Captain James Haggerty the first member of the 69th to die was reportedly killed by a Louisiana Zouave which also included many Irishmen. These "penny ballads" were all the rage during much of the 19th century and were invariably printed on thin delicate stock and sold by street vendors. A quite attractive example of this rare survivor. Inkstamped on verso is "Geo. F. Hambrecht" -- a well-known Civil War collector and noted Lincoln scholar 1871-1943 who founded the Lincoln Fellowship of Wisconsin and served as director of the Wisconsin State Board of Vocational Education. H. De Marsan unknown‎
