‎West Orange NJ: Self-Published 1911. First Edition First Printing. Cloth. Very Good. B.F. Williamson. 5 1/8 X 7 1/2 Inches. 162 PP. "We of the South accepted the result of that contest and laid down our arms in good faith. But when we are asked like a whipped child to say we were wrong and are sorry for what we did and promise to sin no more it is asking too much. Yet our men who fought and lost and those who died in the struggle were just as brave and as honest as the men who wore the blue. They fought for the Union we fought for our homes for our wives and our dear ones." from the Preface

First edition copy of this 1864 prison diary. Signed by illustrator B.F. Williamson directly on the FFEP. Inscribed "To Wm. W. Patterson with my compliments / B.F. Williamson" in pencil. Patterson was one of Mosby's Rangers like the author. Illustrated. ‎1864. unbound. fine. Union Navy A.L.S. 8vo. 2 pages August 27th 1864 Aboard the USS Elfin. Just three months before she would be destroyed by bombardment while in service on the Tennessee & Cumberland Rivers. Letter from a sailor who is trying to get his Land Grant application to Wisconsin but he can't raise the $11.00 application fee on his ship. In part: "I received the papers alright and I signed an affidavit before my Commanding Officer - and I signed them and sent them off but could not get $11.00 aboard of the boat. The Captain signed them also. Write to my wife and have her send the eleven dollars down to Menasha before the 20th of September. I was transferred from the 18th Wisconsin Infantry Co. into the United States Navy as I suppose they could get Soldiers easier than they could get Sailors. I think I can serve my country better here than I could in the land service as I have formerly been to sea and I am an able seaman at present." Fine condition.

unknown‎

‎(Civil War) Mayer, Nathan‎

‎A POEM READ BY SURGEON NATHAN MAYER, OCTOBER 11, 1894, AT THE DEDICATION OF A MONUMENT BY THE SIXTEENTH CONNECTICUT WHERE THEY FOUGHT AT ANTIETAM, SEPTEMBER 17, 1862‎

‎1st edition. Original Blue and White Boards. 13 leaves plates ; 22 cm. In English. This is a poem about the Battle of Antietam written by a Jewish Union surgeon who served in the battle, and throughout the civil war. Mayer wrote the poem for the dedication of a monument established for his 16th Connecticut regiment. “Although Jews had not been allowed to serve in the military throughout most of European history, they had played a role in the defense of their communities in North America since the 1600s… Dr. Nathan Mayer joined the army as an assistant surgeon in a Connecticut regiment of volunteers. He soon became a full surgeon and served at many of the most important battles of the war. At Antietam, he used a farmhouse as a field hospital where he had some success using chloroform, an early anesthetic. ” The battle of Antietam was the bloodiest single-day battle in America History. In the poem, Mayer writes, “To all who in this holy strife/Went forward with their sweet young life/Prepared to give. And let it show/Set high in noonday’s golden glow/Upon this verdant field of blood/That life is not the highest good/but higher, holier, sweeter far/Are life’s ideals. Like a star…” Mayer was later captured with his regiment and held by confederate troops for seven months. (History of the Jews in America: Civil War Through the Rise of Zionism, Volume 2, by Shelley Kapnek Rosenberg, 2005) OCLC lists 19 copies worldwide. Includes period photographs of the monument and of Mayer. Full page inscription about the history of Mayer’s long military career written on the first inside page by Nathan M. Stern, a Jewish sergeant in the Spanish American War. Institutional Stamp. Cover is lightly worn. Inside pages are in very good condition. (AMR-48-23-D)‎
