12 covers each 5½" X 3" New York NY n.y. Near fine. Unused and with faintest of age toning only and original gum present. Exceptional complete set printed entirely in brown ink by Charles Magnus at 12 Frankfort Street in New York. Undated although Steven R. Boyd in his "Patriotic Envelopes of the Civil War: The Iconography of Union and Confederate Covers" dates it to August 1861. While most of the dozen feature naval ships prominently in the middle ground or foreground often with groups of soldiers not sailors! in various activities only two covers actually depicts naval battles at sea and the final three covers depict infantry soldiers battling with no apparent nautical references whatsoever. A fascinating grouping seldom found complete and in uniform outstanding condition. unknown

Personal photo-album of Isadore Nebenzahl war correspondent for Agence Havas later: French News Agency in Ethiopia containing 310 b/w original photographs documenting Ethiopia during the Second-Italo-Ethiopean War of 1935. The photographs measure 3 1/2 x 2 1/2" with one measuring 9 x 6" Son of the emperor and one at 3 1/4 x 5 1/4" <br /> <br /> Some 200000 Italian troops invaded Ethiopia in October 1935 under the command of Italian Marshall Emilio de Bono who was soon replaced by General Pietro Badoglio by Mussolini. The Ethiopian forces were defeated and on May 7 1936 the Italian King Victor Emmanuel III was declared emperor and the provinces of Eritrea Italian Somaliland and Abyssinia Ethiopia were united to form the Italian province of East Africa. The fighting between Italian troops and rebels continued until 1939.<br /> <br /> The British war correspondent George Steer had reported on the use of chemical weapons by the Italian forces and subsequently had been deported together with Nebenzahl and other reporters on grounds of anti-Italian propaganda and espionage see original Reuters bulletin of May 18th 1935 enclosed in the album. The Reuters bulletin was covered by several newspapers including the New York Times mentioning Steers and Nebenzahl in their reporting. Several of the photographs included in this album show Isadore Nebenzahl.<br /> <br /> The photographs depict everyday life in Addis Abebba show Nebenzahl and his colleagues in business settings or on portrait photographs construction sites armed patrol activities gatherings and diner settings military personnel official events actions to extinguish fires friends and families airplanes during air raids victims and destruction from air raids army exercises refugees and troops train stations and ships the harbor and navy ships an airfield and scenarios on the ship after being expelled.<br /> <br /> The album includes a small set of documents and photographs loosely laid in:<br /> <br /> 1. Two official press credentials Service des la Presse for Isadore Nebenzahl both with passport photo of Nebenzahl<br /> <br /> 2. A photograph of what seems to be the son of Heila Selassie laid in with two other photographs.<br /> <br /> 3. A formal invitation of the Foreign Ministry of Ethiopia for Isadore Nebenzahl to attend an evening at the "Noveau Palas Imperial".<br /> <br /> The leather padding of the front cover of the album is missing the back padding barely attached with heavy wear along edges. Front cover cardboard with water staining along top edge not affecting album or photographs. Light age-toning. The binding in overall poor photos and interior in good to very good condition. Binding protected in modern mylar. NP unknown

This is because the dirft of the operation was outwards from the Settlement boundaries with the Japapnese between the Foreign Settlements and the opposing Chinese forces making the Chinese linse difficult to access." Preface.<br /> <br /> Profusely illustrated with striking views of Shanhai including areal photographs before the conflict photographs of the mobilization the refugees the battles itself and the distruction of the city. Photo-illustrated title page.<br /> <br /> This scarce work is a striking piece of photographic propaganda displaying the power and glory of the Japanese Imperial Navy during WWII. Illustrated throughout with a total of 74 mostly full-page b/w collotype images including stunning aerial photography.<br /> <br /> The photobook is divided into two parts: the first one is concerned with naval training while the second part deals with the unfolding course of the war being a record of Japanese successes from Pearl Harbor Malaya New Guinea and other parts of South East Asia. <br /> <br /> This is one of the very first publications to have show and extended pictorial account of the bombing of Pearl Harbor including a number powerful and dynamic images two of the images seen to be illustrations. Includes also numerous b/w Soviet-style photographic plates of naval guns battleships submarines and military planes as well as photographs of operations in China Java Borneo Philippines New Guinea and other areas in Southeast Asia. None of the images are credited to a particular photographer but included is work by Matsugi Fujio and possibly Kimura Ihei. The beginning of the section contains a finely detailed illustrated map showing Japanese naval positions and battles across the pacific theater.<br /> <br /> Text and captions throughout in Japanese.<br /> <br /> Slipcase with some light scratches as well as minor age toning and smudges. Corners rubbed and lightly chipped. Binding with minor stains smudges and scratches to the covers. There is a small 1/2" stain on the upper right corner of the front cover. Edges lightly rubbed with the head of the spine lightly chipped. Interior covers and endpaper lightly damp-stained. Gutters of interior covers reinforced. Book block tight. pages throughout very clean. Slipcase in good binding in very good- interior in very good condition overall. Slipcase and binding protected in modern mylar. Duo de Dolor : Duo de douleur, Douleur à deux.
Dimension extérieur 29,7 x 36,8 cm Dessin réalisé au graphite par (Qeotio?). Il est en très bon état,, on peut y voir un couple pleuré la mort de leur enfant, dû probablement aux bombardements. Dessin réalisé le 14 mais 1938, c’est un beau témoignage de la guerre civile espagnol. Dimensión exterior 29,7 x 36,8 cm Dibujo realizado en grafito por (Qeotio?). Está en muy buen estado, se puede ver allí a una pareja de luto por la muerte de su hijo, probablemente por los bombardeos. Dibujo realizado el 14 de mayo de 1938, es un bello testimonio de la Guerra Civil española.

CONTINENTAL ARMY SOLDIER. This archive consists of the following three items related to a Continental Army soldier Asher Merrell who was killed: a.DS. 1 pg. 4 x 6. January 12 1781. Hebron. Document signed Sam Gilbert Jus Pea and addressed To the Committee of Boy Soldiers: This may certify that Asher Merrell of Hebron is Natural Guardian & Parent to Asher Merrell Jun of Hebron a Soldier in the Continental Service Deceased he was a Minor and Under Age at the Time of his Death. b.DS. 1 pg. 4 x 6. January 12 1781. Hebron. This is a document signed by two Selectmen of Hebron: This may certify that Asher Merrell Jun. Served in Connecticut Line in the Continental Army in Col. Chandlers Regiment before the fifth of Jany 1780. c.DS. 1 pg. 6 x 8. March 10 1781. Hartford. A printed document indicating payment of Nine Pounds eight shillings & five pence as the payment due since January 5 1780 to Asher Merrell Junr Deceased and Paid to Asher Merrell Parent. These three documents reflect the documents certifying the death of Asher Merrell and his payment for his service in the Continental Army. Ensuring timely payment for casualties of war has long been a difficult task especially in the 18th and 19th centuries with limited records and overwhelmed governments. So a positive resolution in 14 months was relatively fortunate for Merrells family. Additionally Merrell fighting as an underaged soldier reflected a common occurrence in an era before verifiable birth certificates and the existence of a Committee of Boy Soldiers reflected such regularity. All three documents are in very good condition and unique windows into wartime bureaucracy during the American Revolution. Included with the archive is a typed page with additional contextualization. unknown

Revolutionary War Era Partly Printed Pay Warrant Manuscript 1783 Connecticut
Hartford CT.: Not Identified. Very Good. 1783. Single Sheet. Original 16th C partially printed and manuscript pay warrant document measuring 5 1/2 x 6 3/4 inches in the amount of 10 pounds eighteen shillings eight pence to Samuel Hills. Signed by Wolcott a member of the commission overseeing the Pay-Table Office as well as Fenn Wadsworth and Jedidiah Huntington an American Revolution War general. One fold line - very good condition. . (Not Identified.) unknown

Two pay lists of the the officers belonging to the Garrison of Fort St Phillips who are to receive
Minorca 1783. Two single sheets. Folio. Very good copies a little toned old folds. Two single sheets. Folio. The first is titled: "No. 26 Pay List for additional Subsistence etc to the officers in st. Philips Castle from 25 Dec. 1781 to 23 Feb. 1782." The second has written on the verso: " No. 136 Pay List to make up Subs. to Brevet Officer etc equal to the Rank where in they respectively serve in The Garrison of Fort St. Philips during the Siege Decemb. 24 1781 - Dollars 4350-50." These two officer pay lists are signed by each of the 36 and 44 listed officers. They're a wonderful souvenir of the siege and with a sample of every officer's signature a valuable source for further research. <br /> <br /> The five month Siege of Minorca August 19 1781 - February 5 1782 was a vital victory over England in the European theatre of the Revolutionary War. Throughout most of the eighteenth century English possession of the island was of real strategic importance from its deep-water harbor the Royal Navy could launch attacks against the Mediterranean fleets of Spain France and Italy. unknown

REVOLUTIONARY WAR REQUISITION. ADS. 1pg. 8 x 5. July 11 1776. Philadelphia. An autograph document signed Alexr Wilcocks addressed to John Nixon and the Pennsylvania Committee of Accounts: Pay Messrs Robt Smith Wm Ball & Benj Haberon or either of their order Twenty five Pounds to be by them applied to the purchase of Awnings to be converted into tents for the use of this Committee. Wilcocks was a prominent patriot leader acting as Chairman of the Committee of Safety. The document mentions John Nixon who on July 8 made the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence. There is overall browning and chipping to the left margin that affects one word. unknown
