Floyd outlining how the pursuit and treatment of hostile Indians are to be administered in light of potential conflicts with other military departments. The orders allow any army unit to pursue a hostile force into another department. However if the goal is to arrest an individual from a friendly tribe who has fled the job is to be passed to the neighboring department. The orders also stipulate that any trooper who loses his Colt revolver will be charged $40. unknown

WAR OF 1812 SHIPPING. ALS. 3pg. 8 x 10. September 3 1814. Philadelphia. An autograph letter signed Thomas Abrams to the New York City firm of Lynch and Aymar. Abrams wrote: it would be with great reluctance I could have the vessel go on almost an absolute uncertainty of obtaining advantageous privilege if any at all. However if the following tuns will suit I will giveorders to have her put at your disposal. The vessel being in the Chesapeake I presume it is there you would wish to have her go. The Schr. schooner to be taken from where she now lies to be victualled &c manned by the charter to be returned to a port between the Capes of the Delaware &light and Five Hundred Dollars paid for the run from which some deductions might be made if permission could be obtained for her to carry out a cargo of provisions. It would also be necessary to warrant her from British capture. I think it would be more for the advantage of the charterers to purchase her as she is an absolute sacrifice at the price asked. Please inform me by return of mail of your determination. If the terms suit I should like to know if I am right in my conjectures of her destinations. The letter has waterstaining and mailing folds and is in very good condition. unknown

Manuscript note on verso by Philip Syng Physick Conner. Blue-backed sea chart. Insets of the harbor of Rio the Bay of All Saints and the Island of Fernand Noronha. Manuscript annotations by Conner plotting the course of the USS Hornet in the War of 1812. Approx. 31 x 70 inches. Pennsylvania native David Conner joined the navy as a midshipman in 1809 and during the War of 1812 served with distinction aboard the USS Hornet where he rose to the rank of first lieutenant during the war. He participated in action aboard the Hornet against the HMS Peacock in February 1813 and in the March 1815 capture of HMS Penguin and was awarded two medals of valor. In 1817 he was commissioned first lieutenant under Captain Biddle aboard the USS Ontario for its voyage to the Pacific. He would eventually rise to the rank of Commodore commanding the blockade of the Gulf Coast during the Mexican War and responsible for landing Scott's army at Vera Cruz.<br /> <br /> On October 26 1812 the frigate USS Constitution and sloop USS Hornet left Boston to raid British shipping along the coast of South America. The Hornet sailed under the command of famed American naval captain James Lawrence best remembered for his order "Don't give up the ship" in the June 1813 battle between the Shannon and the Chesapeake. After a couple months cruising the waters off the coast of Brazil on February 24 1813 the USS Hornet engaged the HMS Peacock off the mouth of the Demerary River. Exchanging broadsides the Hornet's cannons shot true damaging the British ship. Outmaneuvering the Peacock downwind the Hornet approached from the stern firing and forced the Peacock which had lost her captain and taken heavy casualties to strike. The American ship sent on a boarding party but the Peacock quickly sank. <br /> <br /> This large sea chart oriented with north to the east depicts the coast of Brazil from Sao Luis Maranhao to the Lagoon Merim and is profusely annotated by Conner charting the cruise of the Hornet off the coast between December 1812 and February 1813 i.e. the movements of the ship prior to the engagement with the Peacock. Included in the manuscript additions is evidence of the brief blockade of the English frigate Bonne Citoyenne at Salvador where Lawrence challenged the ship to single ship combat with the Hornet but had to abandon the blockade upon the arrival of a British line of battle ship. "Running up the coast she took on January 6 1813 the schooner Ellen loaded with dry goods . On the fourth of February off Pernambuco she seized the brig Resolution ten guns carrying coffee fustic etc. from Rio to Marnaham and a nice little purse containing 23000 in specie. This the Hornet put intop her opwn pocket and then burnt the brig" Conner. After several more weeks of cruising the Hornet engaged the Peacock.<br /> <br /> On June 18 1914 auctioneer Stan V. Henkels sold the books papers journals and log books from the younger Conner's library which included Lt. David Conner's original logs of the voyage of the USS Ontario now at the Library of Congress MSS84251. The present map was not included in that sale; however it appeared within lot 71 at Parke Bernet on May 25 1971. Conner Philip Syng Physick. A nice copy of the October 21st 1814 issue No. 1 Vol. 4 of this weekly which was founded in 1811 and in 1814 changed ownership when Nathan Hale acquired it and changed the name to the "Boston Weekly Messenger" also changing the size and format. This issue is filled with notable War of 1812 news the front page including two lengthy communications signed in type by U.S. commissioners JOHN QUINCY ADAMS HENRY CLAY ALBERT GALLATIN J.A. BAYARD and JONATHAN RUSSELL reporting on their attempts to negotiate a peace treaty at Ghent. There's also page 2 an "Official Account of the Repulse of the British at Mobile" and page 4 a "Biographical Sketch of Lieut. John G. Cowall Late of the U.S. Navy." A fine period piece. Wisconsin: np 1900. Wraps. Very Good. A large unique book ca. 1900 14 x 8.5 inches vertically oriented; softcover about 100 pages of typescript in purple carbon very seldom with ink corrections culled from “The Republic†— probably the Baraboo Republic a newspaper of the period published in Baraboo the county seat of Sauk County Wisconsin this book with material relating to the Iron Brigade the 6th Wisconsin Regiment of volunteers who fought for the Union in the Civil War and also concerning the Sauk County Riflemen. It apparently was compiled by a veteran-turned-historian who concludes this compilation writing “Returned to private life -- became the 'man behind the hoe' instead of 'behind the gun.’†Very rare and a great resource for anyone interested in this period of Wisconsin history. np unknown

"Hell on Wheels War Against the Axis 1942-1943-1944-1945"
Germany: Second Armored Division. Very Good. 1945. Original Vintage Map. 29 x 42 inch original vintage map produced by the U.S. Military titled "Hell on Wheels War Against the Axis 1942-1943-1944-1945" detailing the route and battles of the 2nd Armored Division as they worked their way from France through Belgium and into Germany in World War II. This is the larger version of a map which was issued the previous year. The map shows general handling wear and some edge chipping. There is a small mostly closed tear in the lower left quadrant. Included with the map is the original heavy mailing tube which shows it was sent by a Private Anderson APO New York to his family in Quinnimont Fayette County West Virginia. The map appears to be scarce in the trade with only 1 original currently listed for sale online vialibri. An example is listed and shown at David Rumsey's map website. We are offering this vintage World War II map with its original mailing tube. OCLC offers this note: "Shows route of 2nd Armored Division from Littry France to Gutergluck Germany with historical notes for selected locations. Includes brief history of the 2nd Armored Division. Marginal information includes place names military insignia and names of military divisions. Passed for press duplication by A.E.F. Field Press Censor." . Second Armored Division unknown
