‎An American Living In Vienna Experiences The Beginning Of World War One We Are Still In No Danger As Long As We Stay Here Every Available Place Is Filled With Wounded Soldiers Many Americans Went Home When Your Letter Went‎

‎WORLD WAR I. ALS. 3pgs. November 13 1914. Vienna. An autograph letter signed Libbie Tappan by an American living in Vienna at the start of World War One. Tappan writes home to her sister in America concerning wartime conditions in Vienna. She mentions lies of the media and the fear that her letter will be censored: My Dear Sister: I wrote you a letter sent 21 by a lady who was going home to America. She would amil it in New York. Irene sent one to her Mother she has received an answer to hers. SO I am wondering why I dont hear from you At that time every thing was excitement. All mails from here was stopped and now we have to leave our letters open. Irenes Mother wrote her to come home at once but we thought it was to big a risk to run. We had no idea that they were writing all lies until we got hold of an American paper. War was first declared here on account of the to be next king and his wife were killed by the Serbians. There is such a lot to tell but for fear it will never reach you I will only say the German Kaiser is not to blame. The Germans and Austrian Hungarians have never lost a battle we are not starving and there is nohere. All places of amusement were closed trotting was stopped the first of August. Things are beginning to brighten a bit now but there will be no racing until next year. Every available place is filled with wounded soldiers and we dont see much else but soldiers although there has never been a battle here in Vienna. I am so sorry about Marvin. It seems too bad he had to be taken. I hope you let Eugene and the rest of the folks know about us. We are still in no danger as long as we stay here. I am so sorry I cannot send you some money but it is impossible now. But just as soon as it can be sent will send. Remember me to all the ladies There was a call for linen for the wounded. Irene did two pounds out of my old linen. I thought of you all how busy you would be if you was here there was a ship load of red cross nurses and doctors come over some of them are here in Vienna. There were many Americans went home when your letter went. They were nearly a month on the way. I suppose it cost them a small fortune to go I dont think of any thing else just now. Will write soon again. Trust you are well and all the ladies also. Berdette & Irene sends love Ever your loving sister Libbie Tappan. An interesting first-hand account. It is in very good condition and the original envelope is enclosed. unknown‎

‎WORLD WAR II IN JAPAN. ALS. 2pgs. October 1 1945. Hirosaki Japan. An autograph letter signed Dale Christensen written home by an Allied serviceman stationed in Japan shortly after the official end of World War II. Well I havent had a chance to write for some time. We made it up here O.K. but the ship sure was loaded. We landed at Aomori and this place is inland about 30 miles. We have had no trouble at all. We spent the first night at an airport and then moved to another Army camp the next day then the third bn came up and took over here. I was in on the big thing at this camp I came up with the first gen jeeps and saw the Jap General sign the camp over to us then to top it all off I was picked to take the Jap General to his home. He talked to me all the way but I didnt know a thing he said. When he got out he saluted me. He seemed happy about the whole thing. The climate here is good and cool. We have a big mt right afore us and it looks just like Mt Fugiama sic. They say it sure gets cold here in the winter. The rice is just headed out and it is very pretty here but I hope I can soon come homeWe are cleaning this camp up now it sure needed it. I dont see how the Japs lived in it. Bugs and dirt all over. We sure are making a change in the looks of it. They say they might give each one of us a Jap Rifle and bayonet to take home I dont think there is any thing to it. I sure would like to have one. They sure can grow the fruit and garden stuff here but they sure are way behind in the way to live. I think even behind the PhilippinesThe papulation sic of this place in 97000 and Aomori 57000. Aomori was bombed and it sure was smashed and burned. Well we have a few Japs working in this camp and I think as a whole they will like better from now on that ever before. There clothes are all patches but they look healthy and happy. Well I will write more later. I hope we soon get a mail call. Tell Ann and the rest Hello. Everything is fine here. Write soon. Dale. After the United Statess entry into World War Two the military actively courted Frechie for his skill in transportation logistics. He joined the war effort as a civilian traffic manager for the Army in 1941 before officially joining the Army at the rank of Captain in February 1942 and being sent to London. There he was put in charge of coordinating the covert transport of Allied servicemen and supplies from England to Normandy for D-Day. According to the lengthy text accompanying his citation for the Legion of Merit Frechies war-time activities were in part as follows:The Operational Branch Movements Division Office of the Chief of Transportation was activated in August 1943. Lt. Col. Frechie being the only officer available with amphibious operational experience was designated Chief of said Branch. He developed his staff by sending his officers and men thru a series of strenuous exercises with the British and American Forces at various places in the United Kingdom in preparation for D-DayLt. Col. Frechie as Chief of the Operational Branch was responsible for the movement of all troops vehicles equipment and supplies for movement OVERLORD. Col. Frechie analysed the results and proceeded t make final plans for movement to implement Army requirements. Lectures were made to the Air Force and Ground Services outlining movement plans; ports and depots were visited and careful studies made of their capacity to handle the vast quantity of supplies vehicles and personnel necessary to sustain the operation. Many obstacles were confronted and surmounted by Lt. Col. Frechie in perfection of operation OVERLORDThis required the greatest flexibility in operation which the Operational Branch under Lt. Col. Frechie was able to exert with dispatchAt all times Lt. Col. Frechies superior judgment keen foresight expert planning and unselfish devotion to duty maintained an exceedingly high state of morale among the officers and men associated with him and his efforts can be directly attributed to the prolonged success of this vitally important mission of the Transportation Corps.Frechie was discharged from active duty in November 1945 and served in the Army Reserves until 1953. He was promoted to Colonel in 1946.The archive contains two large boxes and three small boxes of letters and documents. All are in at least good condition with the exception of a few torn letters. Highlights are as follows:One large box of military paperwork. The highlight is a book entitled Berth Allocation Ports UK and marked Most Secret on the cover; it examines many British ports and their capacity in preparation for the D-Day Landings. It includes a booklet of secret maps and information about ports in the United Kingdom. There is also a thick file of diverse paperwork relating to Frechies military career a mix of originals and copies some of it quite mundane such as records of his travel within the UK booklets written by Frechie including Preliminary Analysis and Recommendations Cargo Documentation Procedure and Historical Critique of the United Kingdom Overlord Movements three copies certificates of appointment as Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel copies of his Honorable Discharge citations for the Bronze Star and Legion of Merit and a thick file of documents relating directly to his work on the Normandy landings. Much of the most interesting and unique material can be found in this box. The two thick files are hundreds of pages each. One large box of hand-written letters and copies of V-Mail to and from Frechies wife Rita and son Allen. There are 659 letters from Frechie to Rita and Allen including many duplicates. They are dated 1942-1945 and 1947 and there are also numerous letters dated only with the month and day. A letter written by the renowned Russian ace and world record setting Sikorsky test pilot on behalf of Danish-born ballet and Broadway dancer Paul Haakon considered by many to be one of greatest ballet dancers of the 20th century. <br /> <br /> Reading in part: "I have known Paul Haakon Longreen for over sixteen years. In the theatrical profession he is known under the name of Paul Haakon. It is very well known that he is one of the best dancers in the world. He gave up his dancing recently to become a flying instructor purely to serve his country. I sincerely believe that anything which could be done to facilitate his joining the United States Army Air Force reserve would benefit our war effort."<br /> <br /> Despite Sergievsky's recommendation in our letter it seems Haakon never became a combat pilot during WWII and instead toured as an entertainer with the United Service Organizations. ‎JÜDISCHES NACHRICHTENBLATT. ZIDOVSKE LISTY. ORGAN DER JÜDISCHEN KULTUSGEMEINDE IN PRAG UND DER ZIONISTISCHEN ORGANISATIONEN IN PRAG. VOL II, NRS 27-52 (JULY 5- DEC 27, 1940) . 25 ISSUES, UNINTERRUPTED RUN.‎

‎1st edition. Folio. Newspaper. Illustrated throughout. Includes many advertisements and numerous personal family announcements. Following the Kristallnacht pogroms of November 1938, Jewish life in Germany and Czechoslovakia was even further curtailed and all remaining Jewish newspapers were shut down by the government. In their place, the Nazi Party ordered the creation of a single, new Jewish newspaper, "Das Jüdische Nachrichtenblatt, " that would be directly under Gestapo control. It was published concurrently in Berlin, Vienna and Prague and was occupied to a large extent with announcing the ever-increasing number of anti-Semitic discriminations, orders and exclusions imposed by the Reich government. Over the course of its history, the editors of the Jüdische Nachrichtenblatt were Leo Kreindler (1938-42) and Willi Pless (1942-43) . The Berlin edition ran from the 23rd November, 1938 until the final issue of 4th June 1943. The Prague edition continued until 1945. In a ghoulish twist of Nazi irony, Gentiles were forbidden from reading the Jüdische Nachrichtenblatt yet the newspaper's targeted readership, the Jews, were literally hounded to their deaths by the very authorities who presided over the newspaper's ownership! See Reiner Burger, Von Goebbels Gnaden: "Jüdisches Nachrichtenblatt" 1938-1943 (2001) . A mixed collection of 102 issues from Berlin and Prague sold at auction in 2015 for 9225.00 USD. These issues were at one point bound, but the binding was at some point removed. The newsprint is brown and quite fragile, with edgwear and old dampstains, but there is generally little text loss, except to a few letters on the lower outer margins of the final 10 issues. Now housed in an acid-free sleeved portfolio, with each issue in a separate clear sleeve for easy protected viewing. Fair condition, but very rare, very important, and very powerful. (kh-5-47)‎

‎KONSTITUTSIE (GRUNT-GEZETS) : FUNEM FARBAND SOVETISHE SOTSIALISTISHE REPUBLIKN.‎

‎Original Orange printed paper wrappers, showing distinctive elements of both modern and traditional typeface. 8vo, 24 pages, 21 cm. In Yiddish. Rare 1940 Riga edition of the 1936 Soviet constitution, certainly one of the last Yiddish publications in Latvia; OCLC-Worldcat literally lists not a single Yiddish publication from Riga 1941-1987. “Immediately after the establishment of German authority [in Latvia] in the beginning of July 1941, the elimination of the Jewish and Roma population began, with major mass killings taking place at Rumbula and elsewhere. The killings were committed by the Einsatzgruppe A, and the Wehrmacht. Latvian collaborators, including the 500–1, 500 members of the Arajs Commando (which alone killed around 26, 000 Jews]) and other Latvian members of the SD, were also involved. 30, 000 Jews were shot in the autumn of 1941 with most of the remaining Jewish people being rounded up and put into ghettos. In November and December 1941 the Riga Ghetto became crowded and to make room for the imminent arrival of German Jews, who were being shipped out of the country, all the remaining 30, 000 Jews in Riga were taken from the ghetto to the nearby Rumbula Forest and shot” (Wikipedia, 2016) . SUBJECT(S) : Soviet Union. Konstitutsiia (1936) -- Politics and government. OCLC lists only 1 copy anywhere (Harvard) . Only the lightest wear to wrappers, an amazingly well-preseverd copy of this exceedingly rare Yiddish imprint. (yid-26-6)‎

‎1st Edition. Original Red Paper Wrappers with silhouette of Lion on the front. 8vo. 16 pages ; 22cm. In French. Title translates into English as, “Rabbi Ephraim Elncaoua (The Rabbi of Tlemcen) 1360-1442.” Scarce Holocaust-era publication about Rabbi Ephraim ben Israel Alnaqua (1360-1442) here published in Tlemcen itself. Alnaqua was “a physician, rabbi, theological writer, and founder of the Jewish community at Tlemçen, North Africa… According to a legend, Alnaqua escaped from the Spanish Inquisition, which had martyred his father and mother at the stake, and came to Maghreb mounted on a lion, using a serpent as a halter. Azulai (refered) to him as a miracle-worker. Alnaqua succeeded, after all other physicians had failed, in curing the only daughter of a king of the Zayyanid dynasty. Refusing the reward of gold and silver offered him by the king, he begged only that the Jews living near Tlemçen might be united in it. In this way the community was formed. Alnaqua's first care was to establish a large synagogue: this is still in existence (as of 1906) , and bears his name. Above the rabbi's chair, on which the verse Jer. Xvii.12 is engraved, a lamp burns perpetually. Alnaqua's grave, surrounded by those of his family, is in the old cemetery: it is sacred to North African Jews, and (as of 1906) is frequently visited by pilgrims from all Algeria…” (Wikipedia, 2016) No holdings worldwide on OCLC. ‎JUDAISM IN A WAR-TORN WORLD [EARLY USE OF THE TERM HOLOCAUST]‎

‎No Date (1941). 1st edition, original wrappers, 8vo. 12 pages. Almost certainly published in 1941, as the Rabbinical Association was founded in 1901 and this booklet is “From the presidential message delivered at the 40th Annual Convention of the Rabbinical Assembly of America- Detroit, Michigan. ” Arzt says, “The moral re-awakening of America will be tremendously enhanced by tangible acts of sympathy and succor for the innocent victims of the holocaust across the seas. The Jews of America must, with increasing generosity and self-sacrifice, contribute of their means for the maintenance of the overseas program of relief. Our suffering brethren in war torn Europe will continue to hope against hope, if our thoughts, our prayers and our united efforts will be with them and for them. The religious forces in America should champion legislation for the suspension of all restrictive legislation to make possible the immediate admission of children from Europe for the duration of the war. Millions of Americans will eagerly offer the hospitality of their homes for these unfortunates. The arrival of a huge expeditionary army of little ones to these shores will immediately fortify our spirit and will generate in us a spirit of selflessness and sacrifice which will enable us to face the future with courage and confidence. ” (page 8) Not listed on OCLC or anywhere else online. Haim Yosef David Azulai, “commonly known as the Hida, was a Jerusalem born rabbinical scholar, a noted bibliophile, and a pioneer in the publication of Jewish religious writings” (Wikipedia, 2016) . This book contains the names of authors of Jewish texts. Aaron Walden, a “Polish Jewish Talmudist, editor, and author” used Azulai’s book as a model, dividing his book into two parts: “‘Ma’areket Gedolim, ’ being an alphabetical list of the names of authors and rabbis, mostly those that lived after Azulai, but also including many of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries who were omitted by Azulai; and ‘Ma’areket Safarim’ an alphabetical list of book-titles” (Wikipedia, 2016) . SUBJECT(S) : Rabbinics, Holocaust. OCLC lists no holdings. Pages are brown and fragile. Blank endpapers are loose but present. Library markings. Some edgewear and rubbing. Good condition thus. ‎HITLERISM AND OUR LIBERTIES : TEXT OF AN ADDRESS GIVEN ... AT THE NEW SCHOOL FOR SOCIAL RESEARCH, TUESDAY, APRIL, 10, 1934‎

‎1st Edition. Original Wrappers. 8vo. [4] pages ; 23 cm. Early Nazi-era speech damning Hitler, given at the New York scholarly institution which, under the leadership of the author, would come to be most associated with refugee scholars. “Charles Austin Beard (1874 – 1948) was, with Frederick Jackson Turner, one of the most influential American historians of the first half of the 20th century. For a while he was a history professor at Columbia University but his influence came from hundreds of monographs, textbooks and interpretive studies in both history and political science. His works included a radical re-evaluation of the founding fathers of the United States, who he believed were motivated more by economics than by philosophical principles. Beard's most influential book, An Economic Interpretation of the Constitution of the United States (1913) , has been the subject of great controversy ever since its publication. ” (Wikiepdia, 2017) He was married to Mary Ritter Beard, widely influential historian, archivist, and activist, who played a critical role in the women’s suffrage movement. This is his historic speech criticizing Hitler, in the year Hitler assumed power, at the New School in New York City: “The history of the past four hundred years is in large measure the history… to wrest from arbitrary and irresponsible power the weapons of tyranny. ” SUBJECT(S) : Politics and government. Ex-library with usual marks. Slight edgewear. Very good condition. (holo2-135-51)‎

‎ADDRESS OF HIS EXCELLENCY MOST REVEREND RICHARD J. CUSHING, ARCHBISHOP OF BOSTON : GIVEN ON THE OCCASION OF THE EIGHTH ANNUAL DINNER OF THE MASSACHUSETTS COMMITTEE, CATHOLICS, PROTESTANTS AND JEWS, MAY 24, 1945.‎

‎1st Edition Reprint. Original Wrappers. 8vo. 11 pages ; 22 cm. Holocaust-era publication. Published with ‘Tolerance is Not Enough, ’ reprinted from ‘The Pilot’ on May 26, 1945, which gave a glowing review of Bishop Richard Cushings’ speech. This is the first published speech given by Richard Cushing after he became Archbishop of Boston in 1944. “He served as Archbishop of Boston from 1944 to 1970, and was created a cardinal in 1958. Cushing's main role was as fundraiser and builder of new churches, schools, and institutions. He was on good terms with practically the entire Boston elite, as he softened the traditional confrontation between the Catholic Irish and the Protestant upper-class. Cushing built useful relationships with Jews, Protestants, and institutions outside the usual Catholic community. He helped presidential candidate John F. Kennedy deflect fears of papal interference in American government if a Catholic became president. Cushing's high energy level allowed him to meet with many people all day, often giving lengthy speeches at night. ” (Wikipedia, 2017) OCLC lists just 2 copies worldwide (Harvard, State Library of Massachusetts) , and none outside of Massachusetts. Ex-library with Jewish Institutional stamp on front wrapper and taped on DDC code. Very good condition. (holo2-135-46)‎
