Yank combined war news battle stories and photographs evaluations of America's Allies efforts current events the grim realities of front line life social commentary sports entertainment sex pinups cartoons Sad Sack and others home front and a "mail call" section. "Written by soldiers for soldiers" the articles were written by enlisted rank servicemen and made available to U.S servicemen throughout the world. Yank was not sold publicly and remained part of the serviceman's experience. "Yank The Army Weekly was a phenomenon of World War II that provided an insight into the nature of the American soldier that always will be valid. It provided an irreverent and honest account of the sharing suffering and frustrations of 14 million civilians in uniform during World War II." - The best of Yank. The tabloid magazine cost 5 cents and issue and was the most popular newspaper for American soldiers in WWII. Issues of YANK were distributed directly to combat units free of charge along with other vital supplies. <br> Some of the most interesting issues include: Oct. 5 1945. Surrender and occupation of Japan; includes cover photo signing of absolute surrender of Japan by Gen. MacArthur and Gen. Yoshira Umezu aboard the U.S.S. Missouri. Page. 5 includes a photo of Nagasaki after the atomic bomb page 6 shows a fire bombed Tokyo page 8 shows Hiroshima after the total destruction by the atomic bomb; November 23 1945 includes a write-up of baseball star Jackie Robinson. An article of the fire bombing of Tokyo by B-29 bombers. Showing photos of "Tokyo blazing in the worst fire in history. The devastation has left its charred mark on the city and the memories of it's citizens." November 16 1945 includes pictures and articles of POW's in a Jap prison camp; October 26 1945 includes the GI Atom detail at Oak Ridge Tennessee. August 3rd. 1945 includes images of the bombed city of Mannheim Germany. As well as images of scorched and swollen Japanese corpses in Okinawa. August 17th 1945 includes the devastation of occupied Germany. August 31st 1945 includes a detailed firsthand account of a Prisoner of war taken by the Japanese. September 7th 1945 includes images of Victory Day with a large write-up on the Mighty Atom and the atomic bombs science and effects. July 3rd 1945 an article of Japanese kamikaze pilots with photographs of Jap suicide planes hitting American ships. July 6th 1945 images of Normandy invasion one year later. France. Paperback. Very Good. 8 leaves 12mo 143 x 93 mm. In French. Finely drawn in black ink on onionskin throughout one page text 11 pages diagrams including 4 double-page and one with a fold-out. Staining to outer margins from adhesive. Contemporary marbled wrappers hand-lettered title on label on front wrapper endleaf becoming loose. The text leaf provides a name and description of each component of the Vickers machine gun with numbers corresponding to the finely detailed diagrams which follow. The Vickers gun was originally produced for the British Army and required a 6- to 8-person team to operate. It was in service from the First World War through the 1960s. France ordered 2000 Vickers guns in 1914 with another 12125 issued to the U. S. Army in France. The Vickers gun accompanied the British Expeditionary Forces to France in 1914 and in the years that followed proved itself to be the most reliable weapon on the battlefield Hogg and Batchelor Weapons & War Machines p.62. <br/><br/> paperback

Included amongst the lavish ambassadorial household expenses are details of his journey to St. Petersburg and a note of his departure in May 1858. Without place or date but in envelope with postmarke of Baile Atha Cliath Dublin Republic of Ireland 8 August 1979. 116pp. 4to. Paginated to 117 without a p.95 but with no text lacking. No prelims. Each page typed on a separate leaf and the whole bound together by string through punch holes. Text complete. Dog-eared and worn with the first two leaves separated from the rest. No record discovered of author or title. The play is set during the Second World War and begins: 'Afternoon fourclock . Late spring . side of road North Cork district six miles from town of Kilneesh Irishman trying to fix a tire . car protruding from wings showing a flat. He's sitting on a clump of gravel muttering to himself as Curtain Rises .' The driver's name is 'Jim Fitz' and he is joined by coincidence by 'Adam Hilson the bow'ld Black-n-Tan' whom he arrested two years before. The play proceeds through a series of reminiscences and flashbacks. No published version yet located. Printed in grey yellow red and blue on one side of a piece of paper roughly 33 x 41 cm with 'WINDY CORNER' in large letters at the head. 'Scale 10000'. Top Right "No 1 Sec". Folded three times. In fair condition lightly-aged and worn. Caption in margin reads: 'Information from all sources. Note: - Of the front line posts only those of permanent nature have been numbered'. The 'REFERENCE' lists: German Trenches; German Shell Hole Defences; German Splinter Proof Shell Holes; Main C. Ts.; British Line; Confirmed Batteries; Centres of Activity; Dugouts; Concrete not less than 2 inches; T.M.; T.M. Active; Post; MG; Dump; Roads much used; Main Tracks; Other. Included on the map are 'Suspected Wireless Installation' and 'Possible Telephone Exchange'. A rectangular section is marked 'FOR LOG TARGETS SEE CRATER MAP NO. 1'. Windy Corner was located to the north-west of Cuinchy on what was known as Westminster Bridge Road and featured a house that was used as a battalion HQ and dressing station. It is now the site of the Guards Cemetery which was begun in 1915 by the Second Division and was mostly used by the 4th Guards Brigade. The area was well-known to Robert Graves who was stationed there several times with the Royal Welch Fusiliers. Of the neighbouring town he writes in 'Goodbye to All That': 'Cuinchy bred rats. They came up from the canal fed on the plentiful corpses and multiplied exceedingly. While I stayed here with the Welsh a new officer joined the company . When he turned in that night he heard a scuffling shone his torch on the bed and found two rats on his blanket tussling for the possession of a severed hand.' Obviously an account of a German atttack dealt with and returned by Indian regiments issued in this form for morale-boosting. Woman's Handwritten Civil War Era Letters
Westhampton likely Massachusetts 1861-1864. Ephemera. Fine. Group of 13 manuscript letters black ink in tidy cursive addressed to "Hattie" who is perhaps in Springfield. Most are signed "Mother" one the last and only letter in pencil is signed "Sister Anna" and all are dated 22 April 1861 - "Sabbath Eve" May 1864 and located in Westhampton. A few are somewhat faint but still legible -- otherwise condition is fine. <br/><br/>An interesting group of letters quintessential for their reports on the health of seemingly everyone in town and for their concern with the American Civil War. "I am taking a great interest in war matters feel curious to read the daily paper think the North will come off conquered and I hope without shedding Oceans of blood" she remarks in the earliest letter in the group. Some remarks from later letters include: "We heard that Bolton and Alvin Clark were sick at Annapolis and that Henry Smith is a prisoner at Richmond. Mother England blusters about terribly doesn't she Hope she isn't going to declare war against us."; "Our people have had no letters since the battle are expecting some daily. Edward Coyt of Huntington was one of the wounded. After the battle of Roanoke he wrote to his folks he'd seen enough of war."; "Our men A. P. Bridgman Davis Burt Bartholt Bissell Edward Delany Charles Land Henry Sulliver a fellow living at Capt Custs and an Irishman. So you see we send seven married men."; "Frank Hule was killed in the battle at Murfeesboro Dec 31st by the first fire of the Rebs"; plus a few more comments and names. Mother seems to know everyone in town and some recurring surnames include King Montague Bissell Wright Chapman Davenport Parsons Land or Laud Burt Edwards Jewett Clark Hooker Hubbard Lyman. unknown
