‎(WORLD WAR TWO SURRENDER / VICTORY OVER JAPAN DAY). CARNEY, Robert B (1895-1990), and MacARTHUR, Jean (1898-2000)‎

‎Photograph Signed‎

‎Carney was a U.S. Navy admiral and had a distinguished career through World War Two; he helped to arrange and was present at the Japanese surrender ceremony aboard the U.S.S. Missouri; he served as commander-in-chief of NATO forces in Southern Europe 1951-53 and Chief of Naval Operations 1953-54. MacArthur was a famed New York socialite and philanthropist and devoted wife of controversial general Douglas MacArthur; she was at his side aboard a PT boat when he left the Philippines ahead of a Japanese siege; she often represented him at official functions. PS glossy black-and-white 10" X 8" n.p. n.y. Near fine. Circa 1945-issued news agency photograph taken aboard the U.S.S. Missouri on V-J Day -- September 2 1945 -- showing Douglas MacArthur standing at left in foreground in front of a microphone watching Japanese general Yoshijiro Umezu at right signing the surrender document on behalf of the armed forces as their senior officer. Rows of the highest-ranking American officers -- Nimitz Halsey etc. -- fill the background. Along the narrow blank upper margin Robert B. Carney signs boldly in black fineline and actually draws an arrow about one inch down to himself standing alongside Admiral William F. "Bull" Halsey. On the same margin at left directly above General Douglas MacArthur his wife signs "Mrs Douglas MacArthur" also in black fineline. She was not aboard the ship in Tokyo Bay during the signing but waited in the closest nearby port of Yokohama. Printed text in lower right corners reads "Jap Surrender Aboard the U.S.S. Missouri in Tokyo Bay. V-J Day Sept. 2 1945. McArthur & Aide. Halsey in Center Rear N-2." An evocative iconic image signed later in life by the last surviving U.S. admiral present and the wife of the noted general at front. unknown‎

‎Jackson, Thomas H (Captain of the Army Corps of Engineers); Luke E Wright (Secretary of War).‎

‎Letter from The Secretary of War Transmitting with a Letter from the Chief of Engineers Reports of Examination and Survey of Sacramento River California from its Mouth to Feather River with survey maps.‎

‎1908. Disbound. BINDING/CONDITION: This is strictly a working copy and if it were mine I would dismantle it further. The binding is gone; and the preliminary text pages are in very poor condition with tears and brittle paper. The map paper is of better quality. However it requires two people to unfold a map as-is with them bound into the book and it's not easy then. It appears to me that other than the index and one other most of the maps have never been opened. The index map has some damage -- sadly some caused by me trying to get an idea of what was what. I tried to open it alone. Don't do that. Maps are all verified as being present they are numbered. 8vo 9 inches tall. Description: 60th Congress 2d Session 1908-1909; House Documents Vol. 24; Examination and Survey of Sacramento River. Since this copy is disbound much of the information is missing; assuming this published by the Government Printing House; the only thing that remains of the original spine is a strip with the text ''A P Davis''. The book when whole consisted of preliminary text in the form of letters to the War Department followed by maps. The text portion is brief to page 19. The rest of the ''book'' consists of bound-in folded maps. There are 25 maps counting an Index Map of about 40 x 29 inches: Map of Sacramento River California from the mouth of Feather River to Suisun Bay at Collinsville. unknown‎

‎Henry George Grey, 3rd Earl Grey (1802 – 1894), statesman, sometime Under-Secretary of State for War and the Colonies and later‎

‎3rd Earl Grey; Guiana Substantial Autograph Letter Signed "Grey" to Thomas Baring who has requested advice on the latter's eventual petition 3 July 1857 of the immigration of free labour as opposed to slaves as in the USA into Guiana.‎

‎Howick 25 June 1857. Six pages 12mo good condition. He finds it difficult to give advice because of his "being so imperfectly informed as to the present state of the question of immigration into Guiana. - It is obvious that the course which ought to be taken must depend upon whether the Colonists have or have not reason to complain of the conduct of the Government.- If they have & if any facilities for obtaining labour which might be granted to them have been with-held then a discussion would seem to be desirable & in the present word obscured of the session & if parties in the House of Commons I do not see how you could ruin a discussion except by asking a question & making a statement in explanation of it going into Committee of Supply. But if the Govt as I think it most likely sincerely desire to do all that can properly be done to encourage immigartion & only refuse to consent to measures to which there is a just objectn it would seem to me doubtful whether there would be any advantage in bringing on a discussion or whether it would be quite right to do so. - For this reason if I had remained in town & had had words deleted to present the petition to the House of Lords I would in the first instance have called upon the gentlemen connected with the colony in this country for a clear explanation of what they want & of the grounds on which they think the government ought to do more for them & I w-ould have endeavoured to satisfy myself whether they are right or wrong in order that in presenting the petition I might express the opinion I had formed which you know is allowed in the House of Lords. .". ‎['A Tommy'; Mesopotamia Campaign, British Army, First World War; Iraq; Indian Army; Ottoman Turks]:‎

‎The Campaign in Mesopotamia British Army First World War. Duplicated Typescript apparently contemporary of satirical poem by British soldier by ‘A Tommy’ titled ‘Alphabet of Mesopotamia’.‎

‎Without date or place but apparently written in Mesopotamia in late 1916. This poem is said to be an earlier work by ‘A Tommy’ the pseudonymous author of the collection ‘If I Goes West’ published in London by Harrap in 1918. WorldCat has no entries to support a second claim: that the present poem was published in 1917 with the subtitle ‘Verses written by a “Tommy†who has fought suffered and triumphed in Mesopotamia and is still on active service there’. While there is no indication that the poem has ever been published in its entirety extracts from it appeared in ‘The Bystander’ 27 November 1916; and ‘The Near East’ 6 July 1917; the latter headed ‘An Alphabet from Mesopotamia’ being preceded by the following: ‘A member of our Fighting Forces in Mesopotamia has composed some verses which he entitles “ The Alphabet of Mesopotamia.†Through the kindness of a correspondent we are allowed to reproduce here some specimens’. There may also be a reference in Catherine W. Reilly’s 1978 bibliography ‘English Poetry of the First World War’. Duplicated typescript titled ‘ALPHABET OF MESOPOTAMIA.’ 2pp foolscap 8vo. Text complete on two leaves of air mail paper glued together. Apparently contemporary and with the look of an item that has been handed around the mess room. Twenty-six four-line stanzas: one for each letter of the alphabet apart from a joint stanza for S and T and ending with an ‘ENVOI’. The first stanza reads: ‘ “A†Was an apple that grew so they say In the Garden of Eden down Qurnah way Till Eve came along and ate it one day And got thrown out of Mesopotamia.’ The poem includes the following stanzas: ‘ “F†Stands for Fritz who flies in the sky To bring down the brute we’ve many a try But the shells that we shoot seem to all pass him by And fall --- on Mesopotamia.’ ‘ “J†Is the jam with the label that lies And states that in Paris it won the first prize But out here we use it for catching the flies That swarm in Mesopotamia.’ ‘ “U†Is the Lake we call Umm-el-Brahm And guards our flanks from all possible karm sic And waters Gorringe’s Barley Farm In the middle of Mesopotamia.’ ‘ “V†Is the Victory we won at Dujailah I heard of it first from a friend who’s a sailor Who read it in Reuter’s on board a mahela On the Tigris in Mesopotamia.’ ‘ “W†Stands for the wonder and pain With which we regard the infirm and insane Old Indian Generals who guide the campaign Which we’re waging in Mesopotamia.’ ‘ “Y†Is the yearning we feel every day For a passage to Basra and thence to Bombay If we get there we’ll see that we stay right away From this wilderness - Mesopotamia.’ Without date or place, but apparently written in Mesopotamia in late 1916. unknown‎

First Lord of the Admiralty Edward Russell 1653 -1727 was a key figure in the Nine Years War notably establishing his reputation at the Battles of Barfleur and La Hougue.
Following a decisive 1693 victory over the French navy near Cape Barfleur the House of Commons determined that Russell had not done enough in dispatching French ships; he was removed from duty. After disasters that befell the British Navy in summer 1693 Russell was reinstated. In early May 1694 he was appointed First Lord of the Admiralty and sailed for the Mediterranean to thwart French depredations against the Spanish coast near Barcelona and Palamos. The engagement documented here likely occurred enroute to the Mediterranean.

With the idiosyncratic spelling and usage common to the era. e.g. "we were buzzed about the ears .". A charming patriotic broadside from reign of William and Mary. Rare. No institutional copies located.
. Josiah Bromley unknown‎

‎[WAR OFFICE]‎

‎Sketch Map of Arabia.‎

‎London: Intelligence Division War Office Geographical Section 1906. 490 by 475mm 19.25 by 18.75 inches. British map charting the progress of the Hejaz Railway Colour printed lithographed map. Produced by the War Office Intelligence Division in 1906 the present map depicts the Arabian Peninsula at the beginning of the twentieth century with an inset map of 'Koweit and Surrounding Country'. During this period the Ottoman Empire maintained control over most of the peninsula which was a mosaic of tribal rulers subject to Ottoman suzerainty. Throughout the nineteenth century the Al Saud strove to regain the control that they had briefly held at the beginning of the century. By 1891 however they had been defeated by their Al Rashid rivals who cooperated closely with the Ottomans and were driven into exile in Kuwait. Of the tributary Arab states the Sharif of Mecca was the most important who ruled the western Hejaz region where the important cities of Mecca and Medina are located. In 1900 the Ottomans had initiated the project of building a railway line between Damascus and Medina passing through the Hejaz. From the beginning however the railway line was subject to attacks from local Arab tribes and although no one of these was ever particularly successful they caused considerable difficulties for Turks posted to the project. Nonetheless by the time the present map was produced a significant length of tracks had been laid through Hejaz indicated by the solid black line and the rest of the track planned down to Medina. The following year the line reached Al-'Ula and amid the celebration of this achievement a group of Harb tribesmen began a small rebellion with the hope of halting the project. Their attempt ultimately failed and by 1908 the line between Damascus and Medina had been completed. At the outset of the twentieth century the British presence in the Arabian Peninsula was concerned primarily with maintaining access to British India protecting the Suez Canal supporting the declining Ottoman power against the threat posed by Russia guaranteeing an oil supply from the Middle East administering protectorates in present-day Yemen Oman and the United Arab Emirates and enforcing its naval role in the Mediterranean. At this time railways were widely considered an indispensable tool in administering gaining and buttressing power not only in this region but across the world. This is probably why the present map which was made some time earlier was revised and updated in 1906 with the changes recently made to the Hejaz Railway: "Corrections July 1905; Railways revised Sept 1906". It also shows other transport routes as well as regional boundaries numerous significant cities and settlements and relief indicated by hachures. Furthermore in the lower left-hand corner there is an inset map showing Kuwait and parts of the surrounding areas. Kuwait had become a British protectorate in 1899 and remained so until 1961. Along the lower edge of the map beneath the list of agents licensed to sell it is a manuscript signature in black ink which is likely by the same hand as the annotations found on the map across parts of Hejaz. Provenance: Annotations adding place-names in black ink. [Intelligence Division, War Office] Geographical Section, unknown‎

‎BRITISH WAR OFFICE‎

‎Hong Kong and the New Territories. North Sheet.‎

‎London : War Office August 1945. 780 by 1050mm. 30.75 by 41.25 inches. Chromolithograph map with manuscript annotations in pencil and pen with three insets and diagrams to right margin minor browning a few nicks and tears to margins. A unique map of Hong Kong and the New Territories with contemporary manuscript annotations showing the liberation of Hong Kong from Japanese occupation. This map which shows Hong Kong Kowloon and the New Territories was first published by the British War Office in 1936. The present example a second edition was published shortly after the end of the Second World War when Britain reoccupied the islands following four years of Japanese occupation. Thick red lines across the map indicate the "all weather roads" that could be relied upon for travel and communications across the region. Extending from Lantau Island to the west to Mirs Bay in the east from the Chinese city of Shenzhen in the north to the southern Soko Islands it is generally considered one of the most detailed maps of Hong Kong made in the early twentieth century. The present example is made more interesting by the copious manuscript annotations that appear across the centre of the map. A grid has been drawn over Hong Kong in pencil marking the lines of longitude and latitude more precisely. Discolouration indicates that it this lower central portion that was the primary focus of the map during its use. Annotations in pen identify features such as "Dockyard Stores" "Canal" and "Coal Dump" and military information including "Officers Mess" and "2 AA Guns". There are also numerous annotations listing the number of Japanese soldiers in Victoria these include "3000 Japs" together with a further 200 with horses and the Japanese Officer's Mess. Japanese troop numbers are noted on Kowloon totalling just under 2000 men. More annotations can be seen further north near modern day Shenzhen marking the location of the Head Quarters for both the Hong Kong Artillery Force and the Defence Force as well as military companies and infantry divisions. A note in the upper right margin identifies it as the hand of "Capt Owens" an officer in the British Task Force that landed in Hong Kong on 30th August 1945 to take back control of the territory from the Japanese. Established in 1857 the British War Office was the governmental department responsible for the administration of the British Army until 1964 when its functions were transferred to the Ministry of Defense. During this time it produced many maps with the number of publications increasing rapidly during years of conflict. War Office, unknown‎

‎[OTTOMAN-VENETIAN WAR] - Balthasar JENICHEN (engraver)‎

‎Warhafftige Conterfettung der Turckischen Armata von Galleen und andern Schiffen Dreihundert wie solche dess 1570 Jars in Ordnunge wider die Venedische Lendt ist aussgefahren‎

‎Nuremberg 1571. Engraving printed on two sheets of laid paper joined. Engraver's monogram at the lower left. Early manuscript caption in English in the lower margin. Plate mark: 11 x 16 inches. Sheet size: 14 5/8 x 18 3/8 inches. Very rare German news-sheet map depicting the Turkish fleet invasion of Cyprus in 1570.

Exceptionally scarce engraved German broadside map depicting the Ottoman fleet sailing to Venetian-controlled Cyprus in 1570. The early English manuscript caption in ink just below image reads: "The representation of the Turkish Navall Army in ye year 1570 going forth to meet the Venetian fleet." Cyprus then under Venetian rule was a strategic point for controlling shipping and trade in the Eastern Mediterranean. The Ottomans ruled by Sultan Selim II had long desired the island. Following a series of warnings and demands the Ottoman fleet commanded by Müezzinzade Ali Pasha and Lala Mustafa Pasha sailed for Cyprus in late June 1570. Depicted here the Turkish fleet was composed of an estimated 350-400 ships and upwards of 100000 men. Following sieges and massacres at Nicosia Kyrenia and Famagusta the island was taken by August 1571. Although the invasion was long-heralded the Venetian fleet failed to prevent the invasion or the subsequent fall of Cyprus to the Turks. However they subsequently raised the support of the "Holy League" of the Catholic maritime states in the Mediterranean and defeated the Ottoman fleet at the Battle of Lepanto in October 1571 off the western coast of Greece. The victory of the Holy League prevented the Ottoman Empire expanding further along the European side of the Mediterranean though did not end their possession of Cyprus. Jenichen who signed the map with his monogram 'BI' was the leading German publisher of news-sheet maps. Jenichen and compatriot Matthias Zündt took particular interest in the conflict and produced views and maps of it that equaled and surpassed those of their Italian counterparts. Given their ephemeral nature all are rare and desirable. We can locate only one other example of this engraving appearing at auction in recent times Sotheby's London 29 April 2014 lot 157 £60000.

Hollstein XL B 128; G.K.
